Here you are going to learn the Stopping sight distance, Lag distance and Breaking distance. The minimum sight distance required to stop a vehicles safely without its collision with others vehicles or obstruction. Mathematically , the stopping sight distance of a vehicles moving over a road is the sum of "Lag distance" and "Breaking distance". Lag distance is the distance covered by the vehicles during the total reaction time of the driver.
Breaking distance is the distance through which a vehicles moves in forward direction after applying the brakes. The lag distance depends upon the ability and reaction time of driver and is given by PIEV theory.
The main requirement of stopping sight distance is to prevent the collision between the different vehicles or a vehicles with an obstruction. Such collision may lead to serious accidents and may cause serious injuries to passengers besides damaging the vehicles. The stopping sight distance is also important to easily locate the obstruction.
Factors depends on stopping sight distance are :
1. Features of the road ahead
2. Height of the drivers eye
3. Height of the object from the surface of the road
4. The distance of stopping of the vehicles after realising the obstruction.
Lag distance : During the reaction time, the vehicles is assumed to move with normal speed.
Breaking distance : The type and condition of tyres and pavement surface are the factors on which the coefficient of friction depends. With increase in speed the friction decreases .
so that is all about the Stopping sight distance, Lag distance and Breaking distance . It is very important to know all the information .
