    Tamil Nadu needs to digitalise all the work done in public facing government offices like driver license, state ID cards, land/property registration, birth and marriage/death certificates, traffic and speed citations, civil citations. I am sure that will make the state more successful and modern.

  • @JaRaIndianz
    @JaRaIndianz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    You need to understand basics of FDI. Firstly it is reported on the basis of where the company's head office or administrative office in located, not where the money is spent. For political, historical or financial reasons most of these company head offices are located in Mumbai or Delhi. For example, most Japanese companies that have majority of their operations and investment have their head offices in Mumbai or Delhi. So any FDI invested by these companies operations in Tamil Nadu are reported under the states of Maharashtra or New Delhi, not under Tamil Nadu. Same applies to lots of FDI investment coming to Tamil Nadu in IT and software. Most overseas companies have their head offices in Bengaluru. So most overseas IT investment coming to Tamil Nadu are reported under Karnataka, not under Tamil Nadu. So FDI statistics do not tell the full or correct story.
    Secondly, in states such as Gujarat and to a lesser extent Maharashtra most of the FDI flows into highly capital intensive Petro chemical factories. For dollar-for-dollar these capital intensive industries contribute much less to employment and to local economy. For example, a single 20 or 30 million ton petroleum refinery may bring in ten billion dollars FDI, but because these factories are highly automated they employ small workforce, thereby also not contributing much to local economy. Tamil Nadu doesn't have such large scale Petro chemical to attract huge FDI. This may change with some huge investments being proposed in Hydrogen fuel production in Tamil Nadu.
    So when they talk about FDI reported in different states take with a pinch of salt, that doesn't reflect ground reality, and doesn't talk about the real outcome from FDI.

    • @ravichandransubramaniam6169
      @ravichandransubramaniam6169 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jayachandranramasamy7954. Sir with respect to automation the same is done with intent of improving their productivity and profit margin. This is applicable to most of the automobile manufacturers in Tamilnadu and in almost big electronics manufacturer. Also these big industries also now past 15-20 years not employing people on permanent basis rather going for temporary basis only on adhoc pay fearing the lucrative salary they need to pay which is hampering their profit. Apart from skill level, dedication level coking down at the same time expectation in salary is going up among youngester. This is certainly because of the hefty amount they spend to complete the education. India being more populous country employment will be a permanent issue in the coming days.

    • @JaRaIndianz
      @JaRaIndianz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ravichandransubramaniam6169
      I agree with your viewpoints. There is no single answer or simple solution to the issues you have rightly pointed out in regards to rising cost of labour and need for automation by companies to grow profits and margins etc. However, all these challenges are not unique to Tamil Nadu and India. Businesses and governments all over the world are grappling with the same issues. Additionally you don't know how AI is going to impact businesses, governments, and the society in general in coming years. We are living at a time defined by rapidly changing technologies, disruptive technologies, threat from climate change and growing geopolitical tensions, apart from potential risks from new global threats such as COVID.
      It's becoming increasingly impossible to plan for next five years let alone next ten, twenty years. But in spite of such uncertainties and constraints governments at national, regional and local levels can prepare their economies and people to capitalise on opportunities and minimise impacts from adverse risks. This includes, but not limited to, identifying emerging opportunities and potential threats; strengthening physical infrastructure; equipping people with good quality education and health; enabling people to acquire skills and adapt; caring for environment and people's welfare; and providing honest government and good governance through transparency, eliminating, corruption and bureaucratic hurdles, good communication etc.
      Of course, all onus is not on governments alone. All the above apply to businesses, individuals, families and societies as well. To face the future with confidence you need a paradigm shift in the way governments, businesses, institutions and people go about doing their business today. And it has to start now. As the adage goes, if you take care of today the future will take care of itself.

    Raghuram Rajan said don’t get into manufacturing, focus on services 😂. On a serious note, TN is in a precarious situation. The state faces a low TFR without having grown economically. FDI MoUs are only a fraction of what UP signed. This is because UP has the demographic advantage. And they now have a stable, business friendly, safe environment. The textile industry in TN is already deteriorating as higher costs meant lower orders. States like UP and Bihar will pick up textiles just like Bangladesh did. TN is in a very challenging situation. The port in Chennai is the biggest advantage. TN has to turn Chennai into Shenzhen and have port-led development.

    Starting from 28:46 people are talking about why TN is so great and not asking the learned panelists why it is that no qualified technologist wants to stay in TN instead of moving to Bangalore or Pune or worse still leave the country itself. As an IIT-M graduate it made no sense for me to stay in Madras/Chennai instead of taking a 100% pay increase to work for a multi-national company in Bangalore. Though the coffee and dosas are better in Chennai, I have enough money to fly to Chennai over the weekends to enjoy coffee and dosas while enjoying the high pay and awesome weather of Bangalore! Also the cosmopolitan nature of Bangalore cannot be matched by conservative Chennai. So instead of just trying to compete with Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune, Chennai should focus on other areas like manufacturing phones, cars etc. The battle is lost and it will be impossible to go head-to-head with those other cities. Sorry to say this, but the writing is on the wall.

      But if we take now. It is getting decentralised. It goes from chennai, coimbatore to maduri, Trichy, salem, Vellore, Villupuram. All the people who went to major cities are belong to these humble background.
      If opportunities exist, they might come back. It is not the money alone. It is the people, food, language, culture , and the sense of freedom and peace. You get to stay in there hometown. It will bring back.

    I am amazed at seeing at the answers given by Raguram Rajan. Wondering if he really knows the ground reality or a pure paper economist. For most of the questions he was either beating around the bush or defending how good tamil nadu is doing. About taxes and CES did he advice his friends in Congress when he was the governor of RBI and close to the Finance minister then. No one dare to talk about the white elephant which is the biggest barrier for startups or for that matter MNC's to invest in TN ... the corruption and Political interference and control politicians have over big investments that are made in TN. Biggest bane for TN is how politicians try to control the funds being invested. I am sure for each investment that have been publicized by government 10's of them have dropped out due to political interference and corruption. Also If TN does not fix the Chennai flooding issue in next 3-5years all these companies will disappear. Imagine every year thousands of cars in a manufacturing plant gets submerged or thousands of computers and infrastructure of IT offices gets submerged due to deluge which is now happened twice span of 8 years.

    I think importance must be given to the quality of politicians. Even now, in 2023 one of the selection criteria to become a politician is a person being a criminal. Criminals with excessive power often obtained through intimidation is a sure path to become a politician anywhere in India now.
    Isn't over 75% of our today's politicians not even capable of understanding what these 2 gentlemen are discussing?
