I've wandered around Stockton Rural Cemetery for many years now. I remember when several of the decorative and very expensive, crypt doors were being stolen. The door on the Rothenbush crypt, I believe, was first to go, but was later replaced with the plain, less expensive one you see there today. The Daggett crypt door was also stolen, as were the doors from the Stewart, Fraser, Barnhart, Hyatt, etc etc crypts. The Holt crypt door, seen in this video, isn't the original either, the original was damaged by the thieves, who tried to steal it. Unbelievable that this theft was allowed to happen. The decorative pieces from the Wagner crypt door were being removed around the same time period as the crypt doors were. Lots of history in this cemetery, some of which I added to Findagrave over the years, back when few were interested in this cemetery or it's history. A gentleman named, Glenn A. Kennedy, who was the secretary & treasurer of Rural Cemetery Association from 1950 to 1994, wrote a book about many of those who are interred at Stockton Rural Cemetery. I've always wanted a copy of it. It may have been a paperback or something, more of a local thing, I'm not sure. Good video. Keep 'em coming.
Glad to see you covered the "Other half" of the duel. Ben Holt also had a town named after him, Holt California, just down Highway 4 west of Stockton. Not much of a town today, but back in the 20's - 30's a booming farm community concern.
I have to give you much respect for doing this video. Both myself and my fiance' Roland have been visiting this cemetery for many years (he has been doing it longer than I have). He has photographed and entered hundreds (or more) of the graves there to Find-a-grave -- funny story, that is how we met, via cemeteries! Anyhow, after we started dating he started taking me there on walks, and I fell in love with this cemetery. I dedicated several years of research to finding the stories of many of those eternal residents, finding their photographs in old books and writing about them on my blogs, creating a Facebook page dedicated to that cemetery where we post photos and biographies of the residents there, and also entering their biographical info on Find-a-grave as well. I was so saddened to see the cemetery staff used a lot of my research for their website (without citing their sources) but most importantly they failed to really incorporate the more famous and important movers and shakers in Stockton's history that are buried there. That is the point I want to make with your video. You did that. You not only covered many of the very important (and sadly forgotten) people in Stockton Rural's history, but you also did it accurately and with respect. I really appreciate that. Thank you very much! - J'aime Rubio, Author
He did a good job on the video ! Still many more in the cemetery to cover though. Lots of history here. Stockton Rural still one of my favorites. As you know, I've been roaming around those headstones for many years now. Let's keep the Facebook page going and keep adding names to Findagrave. I'm glad to see others, like History Hunters, you and others, telling our American History. We really do live in a great country.
My husband and I went to put flowers and visit my mother, father and sister's graves since we had no been there for a long time - we live a few hundred miles away. After that we went to visit that Stockton Rural Cemetery which is located behind the cemetery where my relatives are buried - this was today and I left my purse under the front seat as far as it would go - the straps were visible - someone within 15 minutes broke our passenger side window, stole my purse with all my medical cards and ID and SS card and credit cards and all our money ($1592.00) !! We were around 100 yards from the vehicle but did not see anyone near the vehicle - except for one card with the headlights on park in front of our van and then leave very fast. There is a train track very near there and a train was going by so we heard nothing. Stockton is a very dangerous town and very crime ridden. People do not go there!!!!!
I grew up not far from Rural Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery just south of it on Cemetery Lane at Harding Way, it is indeed full of history, l attended school across the street at Stockton Jr High, and of course the Stockton State Hospital was located S/E of it. Interesting video, good job.👍
I lived in Stockton my whole life and I didn't know a lot of this info about our graveyards and the people buried in them, this is really cool, thank you for the video and information!

@@jbenziggy Funny you should talk about Sterling Price and Missouri. I grew up in Lexington, Mo, which was one of the towns on Price's march, and where Price and Mulligan fought. There's a marker in our city park marking the spot where the Confederates stole the Union's pay pouch. There's also a Confederate cannonball in one of our courthouse pillars. I love my hometown. It is seeping in history.
This is an incredible video. Your research into the lives of the deceased is first class. I have learnt so much about American history. Congratulations on a fascinating production. Have enjoyed every minute.
I have ancestors in the Stockton Rural Cemetery. Your video is VERY interesting. My grandmother used to live on McKinley tract and spoke of the hardships during the floods. Her father (my great grandfather) worked for Samson Iron works and was given a car so that he could go out to the farms and fix the tractors when they broke down. He died early, at 43 or so and is buried at Stockton Rural, being Albert Neimeister.
Benjamin Holt Drive is obviously named after him in North Stockton, connecting I-5 with Pacific Ave. and N. El Dorado St. James Budd was Governor when my paternal grandmother was born in 1895 in Stockton. She grew up near the intersection of E. Lindsay and N. Stanislaus Streets. My dad was also born in Stockton, so I have deep roots here.
Born in Ceres, Ca, raised in Modesto, lived in Salida, bought a home in Stockton, Ca. Proud to be a native Californian! There's a lot of history here, thank you for helping gain more knowledge of our great state.

Great video! One of my favorite places to explore! David Terry has been one of my subjects in history for some time now. He was involved in so much California and Texas history! When I first visited his family plot I noticed Gridley"s memorial and was amazed of the grand tribute to a man I had never heard of! It is a full size statue of Gridley on a pedestal at least 15 feet tall with hundreds of soldiers` headstones facing it! JUST AMAZING! Gridley was the Man!
Hi Tammi! Interesting enough. Holt has relatives? in the Crypt with him with the last name Atherton. Atherton Theater is next to Locke Building, while Budd has the names of Danner surrounding his tomb. Danner Hall is right next to Budd on the San Joaquin Delta College Campus.
I so enjoyed the history lesson on the people buried here.Makes the people more "real" with the small biographies you give.Thank you so much for the tour! Looking forward to more!
That was one interesting vlog. Stocken Cemetery certainly had a lot of dignitaries and interesting people including that movie actress. I like that you are able to show photos of a significant # of people to match to the graves you are talking about.

Loved this historical video. I lived in Stockton several times from 1964 to 1972 and didn’t even know this cemetery was there until I went looking for a friend’s plot place year. Her Owen’s plot is just behind what the office staff referred to as Millionaires row, so I had to check it out also. Was amazed too at all those mausoleums and history from all the names so historic to Stockton. Really enjoyed the piece. Thank you!
Wow awesome thank you .I always wanted to know who those big cemetery plots history. All my Family is buried there. Going way back to 1800"s my great great great grandma there
I get it, my daughter married a man from Hicksville Ohio!! I was born and raised in Modesto. Wish I had known more about our history back then. Really enjoy your videos.
I grew up three blocks away, and as a kid I never went into the cemetery. I never knew the history and I really appreciate the time, effort and research you did. Very fun and informative show. Thank you!
another great and informative video.i wonder how many people appreciate the time of all the research involved in making these historical videos.it is also costly. THANKS JEFF.
Would like to see you do a segment on the China town of Rio Vista sometime. Your coverage of the history of the San Joaquin Valley is outstanding. These vids should be played in every history class. Thanks for your efforts Jeff and Sarah
Stockton City has a special place in my heart. I visited these cemetery several times, visiting old town folks from Mabini, Bohol Philippines which was buried right on these beautiful cemetery. I left a happy memories right here.
Really enjoy your passion for history, I try as best I can to tell my grandkids about my family's history as well as the surrounding communities....keep it up, I truly enjoy it!!

My Family are the Tretheway's. Those horse hitches we're made at the Stockton Iron works. Those horse hitches made by Tretheway and Dasher used to be all over downtown Stockton. My grand parents used to have one in their front yard in Stockton.
I am learning a lot about America your videos are very interesting and very informative at the moment I’m just getting over an operation and I’m at home so I’ve been watching a lot of your videos thank you for taking the time and effort to make these videos I am really enjoying them👍

Thank you very much! There are nice parts to Stockton but it's a rough city to be sure. Lots of cities in the Central Valley of California are impoverished. It's quite sad what's happened to California because of its political leadership.
I never visited this cemetery when I lived in Stockton, and wish I had now! The rural cemetery in Santa Rosa, where I was born and raised, is considered one of the most beautiful in California... lots of great interest there, too. Check it out!
It used to be rural. I would take my step kids their. We called it the Monument Park because there are so many statues there. My x’s mother and aunts are there as well as other family members. It was fun to walk around and read all of the tombstones.
Hi Jeff, great history information 👍🏻as always. Enjoying the videos. Just wondering if you have yet to investigate old graveyards in Santa Cruz, CA.? It’s been over 25 years I cannot remember the place but it was by a park where the Pop Warner football was played and I took a walk and found an old graveyard nettled among tall cedar trees it was really cool to read the head stones, as the folks where from different countries. If the place comes to my memory I’ll send it onto you. Thanks again for all your awesome filming and trips. From Bakersfield😎

when I lived in Stockton my wife and I used to go look at the old graves there may sound morbid but it makes me miss home I left in 2002
History is fascinating ... and that includes the dead!
Nothing morbid about checking out graves. There's a lot of interesting history and we can learn a lot from the past. I enjoy grave hunting.
I like cemeteries. What do you know of the cemetery outside of downtown Lagrange.?
Loved this historical video. I lived in Stockton several times from 1964 to 1972 and didn’t even know this cemetery was there until I went looking for a friend’s plot place year. Her Owen’s plot is just behind what the office staff referred to as Millionaires row, so I had to check it out also. Was amazed too at all those mausoleums and history from all the names so historic to Stockton. Really enjoyed the piece. Thank you!
Thank you! I bet I could do a thousand videos in that cemetery alone! So much history!
Wow awesome thank you .I always wanted to know who those big cemetery plots history. All my Family is buried there. Going way back to 1800"s my great great great grandma there

My Family are the Tretheway's. Those horse hitches we're made at the Stockton Iron works. Those horse hitches made by Tretheway and Dasher used to be all over downtown Stockton. My grand parents used to have one in their front yard in Stockton.
Great Video! Surprised Russ Meyer is buried in Stockton. Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! & Beyond the Valley of the Dolls are camp classics.

I hope you liked the video I did here!

I love the old rural cemeteries! We have a great one up here in Santa Rosa that has Ripley from "Ripley's Believe it or not " buried here.
I hope to get up there this year! Luther Burbank is also buried up there!
I liked this very much. Very interesting history.
Thank you so much for letting us know!
Very interesting and well done
Very well done video. Informative and of professionally narrated. What is Stockton like today I wonder?
Thank you very much! There are nice parts to Stockton but it's a rough city to be sure. Lots of cities in the Central Valley of California are impoverished. It's quite sad what's happened to California because of its political leadership.
I never visited this cemetery when I lived in Stockton, and wish I had now! The rural cemetery in Santa Rosa, where I was born and raised, is considered one of the most beautiful in California... lots of great interest there, too. Check it out!
Oops, I see you've been to the Santa Rosa cemetery... awesome, will watch that video next!
Love the fact with such detail you explain the information of the history thank you ❤️💯
Molly, we do a lot of research but it makes for such a better video! We appreciate you noticing! Thanks a bunch!

I see you already know David S. Terry! I was going to suggest The Terry-Broderick Duel for a future segment. I love that cemetery!
Yeah if our governor quit locking down our state I could do a lot more like the Terry-Broderick duel site but he keeps on keeping on.
keep it up I like what your doing thanks
My family has been in the area from 1853, you should do a part 2. Lot of founding families buried there.
That was so interesting all those people and what they did
Great tour and research.

It used to be rural. I would take my step kids their. We called it the Monument Park because there are so many statues there. My x’s mother and aunts are there as well as other family members. It was fun to walk around and read all of the tombstones.
Great Job!

Thanks for this!!!!!!
Thank you very much for watching! And I'm glad it kept your attention!
