  • A landmark re-discovery, Antonio Canova's 'Maddalena Giacente' (Recumbent Magdalene) (1819-1822), is the Italian titan’s lost masterpiece, which he completed shortly before his death.
The Recumbent Magdalene holds an important place in the canon of western sculpture as one of the last marbles executed by one of the greatest proponents of European marble carving.
Canova was an undisputed master both in his compositional talents and in his ability to translate those compositions into marble.
This magnificent sculpture represents an extensively documented commission from a major figure in British history, the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool.
📍Canova’s masterpiece will headline Christie’s Old Masters Evening Sale on 7 July. Don’t miss your chance to view the Recumbent Magdalene at Christie’s London on view now until July 7!

Brilliant story and if you are in London do pop in to Christies to see it (it is free - just walk in!). The way they have lit it is breath-taking.

There is quiet a story of abandon and rebirth. Canova’s Magdalene is a marvelous sculpture. Loving and adventure in art.

Lovely story that I come across researching a Canova painting of 2 Graces crowning Venus which proved to be the inspiration for an earthenware group by John Bevington.

I'm sure all the fuss over discovery will jack the price up. Then, into a private collection it goes. Not so much unlike Christies selling King Tut's jewelry, the only difference was there was no digging for "Provenance" for that.
