The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It’s sad they’re all gone now except Otis Williams
Especially how they died.

awesome!!!!
siiii
The temptations singing Marvin gaye. The jackson 5 and George Harrison from the Beatles is incredible
Okay Otis I see you with that smooth lead! I love it!
It would have been better if he could actually sing.
It wasn't just how they sang, but their choreography... They were great!
You have to thank Paul Williams for that. When the temptations got together they really couldn't dance and Paul told them that if they are just singing on stage the fans might as well just buy the album to get the same result. If they come out to see you you have to entertain. And Paul was a smooth dancer too
@@brandonayong5823 Good point!
Omg.. Otis has a beautiful voice. It's nice to hear him sing
It reminds me of the lead singer of Heatwave not quite as strong, but similar
1971... A staple for us baby boomers! We were lucky then, I was 16 back then.
I was 9years "old" 😂
Otis has a Smooth Voice..should have lead more songs
One of my favorite performaces from the Temptations. It's sad this is also the last TV performace of Eddie and Paul. Eddie would leave a couple months after this and Paul would end up retiring a few months after due to health reasons. But other than that, the Temptations are forever! Love this 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
Eddie officially left March 71. Paul officially left in August that year.
You can tell that Eddie wasn't happy 😢 because in his happier years he would always 😅 when he was singing.........period
@@NathanAHogan
But Paul still remained the group’s
advisor and choreographer until
he passed in 1973.
This is the final part of the Temptations performance from this episode which had not been uploaded, from one of the last Sullivan shows. They also sang "Get Ready", "Just My Imagination" and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" which are available here in separate videos. This episode also featured Connie Stevens singing "Tea for Two" and Doug Kershaw, which have also been uploaded.
Happy Easter, Tom! 🐰🐣
Thank you for always sharing! 💖
@@that70sgirl90 Happy Easter to you too, my friend, and you are very welcome!
Just before Eddie Kendricks went solo.
Thank you for sharing this information.😊
@@My3Sunzs You're welcome!
First time I've ever seen Otis take the lead on a song.
He's lead plenty of songs. Open Your Heart (The Distants), Don't Send me away, I Ain't Got Nothin', I See My Child, The Christmas Song, Dreammaker (Unreleased), he's also co lead on Cloud Nine (Reality🎶), Runaway Child, I Can't Get Next To You, Psychedelic Shack, Take a Stroll Through my mind, echo's on You Can Depend On Me, the intro to Check Yourself, Is It Gonna Be a Yes or No (2022 Temptations 60 album). Check them out!
@@temptin_temptations I'm well aware that he had parts in all those songs. I said it was the first time I had ever seen 👀 him lead a song. Thanks for the list though 😉
@@erickelly3447 Thought the same thing as I watched it. Glad I checked comments before I posted.
His best vocal performance was in the song "You made me so very happy"
@@temptin_temptationsGreat list. He also led on Read Between The Lines and co-lead on Can't You See Sweet Thing and co-led on The Christmas Song from 1980
Paul look like he's in a lot of pain at 0:25 :(
During this time, his sickle cell took a tole on him, which led him to reitre later that year due to a spot found in his liver.
Damn its all in his face...he gave it 100% 4 sure
you can tell Paul was struggling. Missing steps, face was swollen. Sickle Cell was taking its toll by this time.
People today couldn't put on a show that good in 2 and 1/2 min
The Temptations... greatest male vocal group ever!
A rare Otis Williams lead!
I like The Temptations...A Classic in the 20th Century✌️
Huh? I thought all the Temptations performances were uploaded by 2021. Obviously I was wrong.
Melvin always has a smile on his face ❤
It’s great to see Otis sing lead if only for a brief moment
These Brothas did the damn Thang! They STAYED on the top tier. Much respect to them and may they rest in perfect pe@ce.
Can’t wait for this!!! Up the Temps!!!!!
Wonderful, and thanks for the memory.....
Remember how music was so good and so prevalent in society that we'd show it on TV? Man, it feels like it's been such a long time.
Wow. All great singers. ❤
Otis did good on his lil piece of the song!
Why not just not upload the entire medley??🙄
The Mighty Temptations
The young generation 😢 needs to go back where they come from and there future 💗 we reviled
Love it great music, talented artists singing songs I like especially "I'll be there." Thanks for sharing. 🎶❤️
First time hearing Otis sing!! 😮
It’s so refreshing to see an era where the music projects love and happiness, instead of the crap we see from Rap.
There’s no egos there’s no guns they’re not calling woman hoes, or bitches, and not talking about popping caps or knocking someone off or doing time in prison and drugs.
Music reflects society and influences the young.
I agree it's crazy how people compare today's music to the old school.
Superb Always thee Ultimate !!! Been loving their stuff since '66/'68 and on / Thanks for this !!!
NEVER SEEN THIS EPISODE...BEFORE. TEMPTS CAN SING 3 BLIND MICE AND IT WOULD BE A HIT!!
❤❤❤❤❤👁️✝️🕊️God Bless Them For Ever And Ever Amen. In the name of, The Father 👁️ The Son, Jesus ✝️ and The Holy Spirit AMEN...♾️...
Most of them are with My Sweet Lord. 🙏 🙏 🙏 including George himself.
Can't wait to see Eddie and the guys in one I've never seen before. This was close to Eddie's departure. The beginning of the end of the original lineup.
Eddie and Paul both
Paul left in August 1971.
DENNIS WASNT AN ORIGINAL MEMBER
@@majik31401 no he wasn't Tyrone he came in 68 after David. Big shoes to fill but he brought the guys into the 70's. After Vietnam 70-71 I went back on the road as a professional
@@majik31401 that email got away from me. As I was saying after Nam I toured as a professional drummer, I had the honor of backing up the temptations at the jazz festival in Cincinnati in 72. Mel Brown was their regular drummer why he had to fly home escapes me. Eddie and Paul were gone by then. I think the the replacements were named Damon and Terry if I'm not mistaken. Spent all of 5 minutes with them before we all went on stage to walk out in front of twenty thousand screaming chick's was high no drugs could give you. They all autographed my drum head, we shook hands and bam their road manager grabbed them and they were gone. I never saw them again. It's a been down hill after that.
The costume designer who made those pants really wanted to show off more than their great singing. 🌭
The best to ever do it!
Letss go Temptations 💪🏽💯💙
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
i love them but this is funny ✌🧡
Paul looks so hurt when they transition from I ll be there to my sweet lord
Yeah i noticed that...sickle cell aint no joke..clearly in pain
This is one of my favorite performances ⭐⭐⭐.

Love these guys.
I notice this was after David Ruffin was out of the group. This was really good. TY for sharing it. God Bless You & stay safe.

Melvin: TALK TO HIM OTIS!!!

Otis: You sure you won't reconsider
Eddie: HELL NAH!!! This is just a courtesy appearance. As soon as this performance is over...I'm OUT this outfit figuratively and literally.

Otis had a decent voice. He shoudl have lead on more songs
What's with the edit at 0:22? Otis and Eddie singing lead on I'll Be There would be like Marlon and Jackie singing lead
🤣
The best R&B group ever
My lord indeed. Dennis🤍
BACK THEN BACK WHEN.
Great!!!
Wow
I love everything about this: the fun, colorful comic book costumes, the dance moves, the one drunk guy out of step, and of course the singing. Dennis had such a strong masculine voice and presentation. He was my favorite of the lead singers.
Let's get some straight here Paul was never drunk he was only out of step I wasn't back then but I'm getting of seeing people call him a drunk the man had sickle cell. That's probably why he was out of step the pain of sickle cell. It's sad how people today young or old think you know everything learn some facts before you just jump out and say any and everything.
@@aintnothingliketheoldskool Paul was a brilliant dancer and singer. Much respect to him on his Birthday today 7/2/23.
🎉🎉❤
Damn Paul look drunk
Actually, contrary to how the movie portrayed him, Paul was never drunk on their performances. This has been said by Otis and Dennis themselves. This was at the time his Sickle Cell disease was getting worse and he had a hard time performing at times. He had ventilators backstage because his episodes would make him lose breath easily. Alcohol was the only way he could calm his Sickle Cell pain as there wasn't any treatment for it back then. And pain pills bloated him to where he couldn't do much. I encourage you to read a little about Paul because he was an amazing guy who got his legacy tarnished by The Temptations movie.
I've done my research n I do know this about Paul...but in the book by Tony turner..it also said Paul really use to be lit all the time..and he was going against alot of was otis was saying..it was a great read..not saying what u are saying isn't true.. but at the same time he could've been drunk... people who actually knew him as a person like duke fakir and others did say he use to drink as well...but as a true fan that doesn't define him in my eyes..he was a true legend and I feel like otis played a part in his death.. especially hearing tales of how they did him... rip to Paul I meant no disrespect I love paul...he was truly special.. to me there is no greater lineup then the original 5
@Paul Williams Fans don't u think the circumstances of Paul's death was fishy??? He is out the group but still on payroll...but is trying to get together with Eddie n david and at the time has also been recording his own solo records... the say he shot himself in the left side of his head with his right hand... yet there are 2 shots total fired..but only 1 to paul..he is in only drawers supposedly after coming home to his gf having a party???.. liquour bottle found by his left side like he dropped it with his left hand...it's very fishy
@@paul_williams_fans Paul wasn't drunk on stage but he was very often hangovered. He did drink a lot at that time and that was like you said his way of copping with the pain. Still was a terrible path. Especially for someone who never drank alcohol before that. He also had a very chaotic family life at home. He had so many issues
Folks, you are watching musical Royalty. Music has never been the same with out this temptations lineup. Other lineups have been very good, but they don't have magic of the original temptations. No
One on earth can replace the original temptations. God rest their souls.
