As a video professional, I really appreciate the production values you bring to your episodes -- letting the cutaways, B-roll, and nat sound help tell the story vs. the typical TH-cam, endless, facetime narrative. Yes, there certainly is a personality-driven aspect to Sailing Uma, but when you craft that balance between compelling visuals and a personal POV, I forget about how it was made vs. where you're taking the viewer. Or as Bob and Doug McKenzie used to say on SCTV's Great White North, "Beauty, eh?" Fair winds and following seas to you both. Cheers.
Comparing Sailing Uma to Doug and Bob is almost an insult, luckily they have a lot more class than Bob or Doug also the fact she being female also adds to Sailing Uma does not discount the Class of the young Lady!
Can't believe you still had most of that half bottle of Glenmorangie. You are not big drinkers are you. Very pleased it provided a drink for the glacier ice!!! Very fitting because at the time I gave it to you you were publishing the Norway videos and you had recently shown the Norwegian Whisky barrel purchase. This was one of my favourite segments. Lots of sailing and bits of the boat handling. Dan's single handed sail hoisting and setting was very good to see. Also hose to get seaweed off the anchor and the use of the cockpit shower. Its good to be reminded of all the boat projects that have taken place over 8 years, and just how easy it is now for Uma to be sailed, and used, conveniently, by one or two people, or even three!!!!
Hmm............. not sure I'd agree with that. I watch less and less these days. They were interesting when they were designing and building systems. Their late content simply isn't great.

On the practical side I keep thinking you guys really need something likeWheel-a-Weigh to save both your dinghy and your backs. I've used them for 20 plus years on my Achilles dinghy and think it's one of the reasons it has lasted so long, including 8 years in Pacific Mexico (It does look like they have changed their design since I bought mine, to a maybe less durable design, VEVOR Boat Launching Wheels look like what I have used with the longer transom mounting hardware). Drop the wheels into the water before it's too shallow, it then protects your prop to some degree, and on getting to the beach usually one person can roll it up the beach to the high tide mark. Something of this nature makes dinghy landings and launching so much easier. Production Quality, you guys are the gold standard. Great editing of superb video, combing drone, fixed and hand held cams. Great work!
This Step is a testament to all the smart, hard work you two have put into Uma. You just keep adding mod cons and life hacks to your trusty vessel. Fair winds and following (but not over the transom) seas!

This episode had a more subdued tone than usual. That’s a good feeling being provisions like that that’s great I know when the pandemic started and I started shopping for two and three weeks at a time it felt good now I’m down to happen to go to the store pretty much every day I should probably go ahead and get a big order again it was so convenient to have the food at home
You two are the ultimate proof that you don’t need a super expensive, gigantic “blue water” boat to sail around the world. Y’all have been at this for many years now. What advise would you give to a couple wanting to start a similar journey with no experience?
They’ve literally given you a blueprint. Start their videos from the beginning. Only thing I would do different from them is I’d look for a bigger boat to salvage. Maybe a 45’ boat and a little wider too. You also have to remember that their chemistry, charisma and their looks, honestly especially Kika’s looks and personality, have enabled them to be one of the lucky ones to have a super successful TH-cam channel that allows them to financially pay for the salvage and remodeling of their boat and has allowed them to do all this traveling and upgrades to their boat as they travel to these wonderful places without having to have other jobs. So you have to consider that to unless you happen to have other money somewhere. Not everyone’s TH-cam channels take off like this. So as you watch their videos, consider the financial side of not only the cost of the boat, but the cost of basic survival and travel once you have the boat up and going.
Your life seems like more of a constant grind than it does glamorous. The sites you get to see are pretty amazing, but I wouldn’t trade my life in Hawaii for a life of constantly working for every little thing. I do enjoy the scenery of all the places you travel, but I have several islands here to explore that are magnificent & never cold 🥶 I wouldn’t attempt to do what you guys do in a million years. But, I sure enjoy watching you work & play! Watching all you endure makes me appreciate my own life living comfortably so much more. I hope to see you guys on a national tv channel one day!!
Add a 12V or 48V heating element to your hot water heater. Dump excess solar to it, or add a switch to use existing solar panels to heat the water a bit. Even if you added another small panel to heat the water, it only takes a little bit to keep it warm-ish.
Slante - Team UMA! - that was certainly one of the more decadent Uisge Beatha swigs, albeit at that time of the day. From a famous Scottish distillery and on polar ice. Quite a fitting way to celebrate your success in many ways - funny and sad at the same time. A sign of the journey you have come. A salute to the good things in life. But also - a reminder of the melting polar icecaps due to climate change - quite literally. And delivered by one of the most ecology conscious sailing channels out there. A very visual demonstration of the quagmire mankind has maneuvered itself into. KEEP IT UP - You are doing excellent work. And hopefully soon, you will manage to have a fully electric dinghy as well!!!
Around the Med and especially in it you'll come across lots of foam lines like that one. The fish farms tend to release a lot of slime at feeding time which makes foam lines just like that.
Hey Guys nice one, have you ever thought of fitting little wheels to your dingy ? maybe you don't need them being young dudes but makes moving dingy so much easier especially when loaded up with weight. I'm 60 and could'nt do without them now lol ...:)
Just an idea for the trash problem for you guys- we put all organics in a little countertop bin and empty it once at sea (or at night when the current is going out of the anchorage). Things like banana peels I cut into small pieces so fish can eat it or it will decompose faster. Any soiled packaging we wash in saltwater and dry before putting it either in recycling or general waste. It's incredible how much we have cut down on trash bags this way and nothing ever smells. We can go for weeks without needing to take out the trash. The recycling gets full first.
Same on our boat. We usually just blend up organics in the blender and pour it down the drain. If we prep food we’ll, we can go 2-3 weeks with only making one bag of plastic waste. But when we’re coastal, we don’t spend as much time prepping so we make more trash. But it’s only one small bag a week. So pretty good compared to before.
When I was sailing around the Antarctic, we would moor against an Iceberg - chip off a chunk of million old ice - which would effervesce as it melted (releasing compressed air)
Growing up in Newfoundland we'd often get iceberg ice in the spring. I was always fascinated by the idea that the air inside hasn't changed in millions of years.
Great episode as always. There are small wheel that attach to the stern that will save the Dingy bottom from scratching when landing in the beaches. Might be worth look at them.
Dan and Kika, It's nice to have a sailing vessel that one person can sail without any difficulty; and I am a fan of keeping the number of lines in the cockpit to a minimum. I like your boat a lot and the work that y'all did to make the cabin layout your own is AWESOME; and going with an electric motor is the best concept that I could imagine. Kudo's to Dan and Kika; fantastic imagination. I noticed that Kika was wearing her Port/Starboard socks. I have a few pair of those, myself. Thank you for sharing. Blue Skies, Fair Winds, and Following Seas. Faithfully, James
I have always wondered why sailboats don't have solar hot water systems. For a boat like Uma it might be as small as two of your old solar ovens reflecting the sun back at a pipe that is painted black and a small recirc pump moving the water from a tank to the pipe and back to the tank. It is a simple circuit that turns on when the water temp drops below a level that you select and would also turn off it goes above another temp that you would select (it doesn't make sense to burn yourself). By the way what happened to the solar oven?
No collisions and not even a close shave! But certainly a hairy situation! : - ) It was cool (pardon the pun, this time) having that Scotch whiskey on glacier ice. BTW - I'm wondering if you'll try to meet up with Jordan and Desiree of Project Atticus? They're a bit east of Gibraltar (as of a week or two ago).
You might be aware of the famous film/documentary producer, Ken Burns. One of his most excellent productions is the series titled, "America's Best Idea", about the history of, and touring the National Park System. It's pretty cool that, since its inception, other nations have followed suit. Including Spain, where you were just anchored. . 🏴☠️🏴☠️🧞🌊⚓⛵⚓🌊🐬🏴☠️🏴☠️
Sticking to the script with another night arrival, I see. Lol, just one more wonderful step, which was recorded/edited really well, as always! Thank you and safe travels!!

@@SailingUma Electric, 1400 watts, 120v / 220v depending on country of ordering it. 10 mins in summer and 15 mins in winter and you get super hot water. There is also a 4-gallon version that we used in some of our van builds given it is more compact. \

It's called a "snubber". It takes all the forces of the anchor and chain and directs them to a cleat on deck rather than the anchor windlass. In heavy wind, we put out a much longer one, that also adds some elastic dampening to the system to avoid shock loading the deck gear.

I was thinking the very same thing, that they are sailing and seeing the world on a very modest sailboat that is not breaking the bank. Its brilliant
Go small, go simple, go now.
Dan&Kika, You two are my second favorite couple.
+++++
I cut my hair, too! My wife finishes my cut.
Beautiful, thank you.
I’m looking forward to discover Porto through your eyes.
Its is 24/7 work. Don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise 😂.
best sailing channel
Another great episode, by great people! Thank you for sharing and doing what you do! Stay Safe!
Add a 12V or 48V heating element to your hot water heater. Dump excess solar to it, or add a switch to use existing solar panels to heat the water a bit. Even if you added another small panel to heat the water, it only takes a little bit to keep it warm-ish.
We don’t have “access” solar. We just make electrify for our main battery bank, and can do what ever we like with it. No need to complicate things. ;)
Haha whiskey with glacier ice, nice guys! That’s how it’s done💕 and that shot at 21:25 oh man gorgeous!
It is nice to see te casual side of your lives. Also the sunset was gorgeous!!!!!!!!!
when workday gets stressful, i can always relax with your videos
Miss your daily posts.
Welcome to Portugal
I'm thrilled that you let us join you!
It’d be interesting comparing food shopping prices along the way, to see some price differences.
Great episode as always. There are small wheel that attach to the stern that will save the Dingy bottom from scratching when landing in the beaches. Might be worth look at them.
Awesome video love your videos
Love seeing your regular boat chores!
The greek islands is waiting for you during the winter when no tourists are around. Cycladic rocks and sun!!! Cheers!!!
So in the beginning, while Kika is working stuff into her out-tray, Dan is enjoying himself easy sailing, generating more for her intray.
😂😂
I know it's not all sunshine and lollipops but y'all made such a beautiful video out of what seems like a few normal days.
Living the dream!.
Dan and Kika,
It's nice to have a sailing vessel that one person can sail without any difficulty; and I am a fan of keeping the number of lines in the cockpit to a minimum.
Faithfully,
James
Love you and your "little boat" ! ❤
Love Glenmorangie too ! 😀
Beautiful and chill, thanks for that!
Damn! That SUNSET was beautiful!!! You guys are awesome
Nice music selection on this episode. Very chill and unobtrusive.
What a delightful step, guys. Just all the fun vibes one could hope for ...
I've watched just about all of your videos, but for some reason I really enjoyed that one,
ATB Pete
You two are just the cutest, working and laughing yourselves silly.
Sea foam is actually caused from the decomposition of living things...when the water gets really turned up it creates the foam.
What a difference to other channels you have so much experience and discipline as well as joie de vivre
And really, really good editing.
I'm looking forward to your time in MY Spain. 😃 I served in the US Navy in Rota Spain in the '70s for a couple years. LOVE Spain ❤️
Friends, enjoy Portugal. Porto, Lisbon and Algarve. Greetings from Granada-España.

Sticking to the script with another night arrival, I see. Lol, just one more wonderful step, which was recorded/edited really well, as always! Thank you and safe travels!!
Thank you-great ,amigo, 🙂
We used to have the Bosch 6 Gallon water heater in our van before moving onto a boat and we LOVED it. It took about ten minutes for both of us to have hot showers. Highly recommend it.
- Ashley & Colin
Is it gas? Electric? What does it draw? What voltage?
@@SailingUma Electric, 1400 watts, 120v / 220v depending on country of ordering it. 10 mins in summer and 15 mins in winter and you get super hot water. There is also a 4-gallon version that we used in some of our van builds given it is more compact.

Very beautiful 👏👍
Outstanding! 👍🏾
You guys are the best love watching this
In the Med you come across thick slimy foam too. It's always near fish farms, don't know if it's from the fish food or what ..😁
Kia ora from New Zealand...Love your Canuck style [similar to us Kiwis]. Since 2016 i have been travelling around NZ in my self-sufficient motorhome on a permanent basis and relate to your lifestyle choice. Just seen my first YT video of your adventures and looking forward to following you both, more. Buena suerte Dan y Kika 👌
for future reference hammocks are surprisingly really effective for carrying groceries between two people
Beautiful sailing and great editing 👍👍⛵️⛵️⛵️💕💕
Thank you
I love coming along for provisioning. You guys are the best!
I love your neat and organized cabin. You should do boat design.

Love the realness
Drinking glacier ice in Spain is a rather unique experience 😀
Love the music you choose! awesome...
Big POLAR BEAR hugs from Canada, have an awesome holiday season, and the haircut looks Terrific!
I used to use a local salon at 35$ per haircut every 5ish weeks or so. 2020 saw my wife do the cutting and now we buy wine with the saved money!! good job !!
I love when you speak Spanish. Regards from Madrid
Dan what is the purpose of that black line on the anchor chain? I have seen that a few times and I just don't get it.
It's called a "snubber". It takes all the forces of the anchor and chain and directs them to a cleat on deck rather than the anchor windlass. In heavy wind, we put out a much longer one, that also adds some elastic dampening to the system to avoid shock loading the deck gear.
I respect the immediate instinct to have some wonderful whiskey with the glacial remnant. 😁
Love your videos guys and FYI, the hot tubs in Iceland, where you can see your boat are now ready. They were under construction when you were here. And if you ever come to Iceland again, pls. contact me as a friend and I will point you in the right directions. Your drone videos from here were out of this world, but it was only the tip of the iceberg. So to speak hehe.
