  • Big Ben and the Steelers are coming off a surprising upset of the Colts in the Divisional Round, as they travel to Denver to take on Jake Plummer and the Broncos, fresh off a win over the two-time defending champ Patriots, to decide the AFC representative in Super Bowl 40.

    The 2005 Steelers were a 15-1 team the year prior. People are fooled by their wildcard status, but this was a damn good team who had to deal with losing Ben for three games in the middle of the season.

      Steelers were awesome for a long time - overshadowed by the Patriots though.
      If not for new england, this Pittsburgh dynasty from Cowher to Tomlin is right up there in NFL History!

      They were also 11-5 and only lost the division on a tie breaker. Pretty damn strong for a #6 seed in a stacked AFC. Remember in 2008, coincidentally another year where the Steelers won the super bowl, the 11-5 Patriots actually missed the damn playoffs. And those 11-5 playoffless Patriots with Matt Cassell at QB due to Brady's torn ACL would destroy the 7-9 Seahawks who won their division a few years later. Everything is relative, it's about perspective. The 2005 Steelers were much better than people give them credit for, you're right. Unfortunately some tick tacky calls went their way in the SB and that's all anyone remembers but 2nd year Roethlosberger literally outplayed Peyton Manning on the way there. But people don't remember that either, they just remember the Bettis fumble and Vandershank missing the FG. No one remembers the Steelers led the Colts 28-3 in that game and that a Polamalu INT should have ended it at 28-10 but the ball was given back to Indy on an even worse call than anything the Steelers benefited from in the SB. That was actually the second Polamalu interception to be overturned in that game when neither of them should have been. Colts were lucky to be in it after that. 2005 Steelers, best #6 seed of all-time.

    Bill Cowher's strength as a coach is his ability to let his assistants do their job and his belief in the players. A good leader is someone who brings others who have a similar mindset to theirs then he/she lets them do what they do best. Pittsburgh Steelers are a model organization for how a business should be run in sports and in the business world. Only three coaches since 1969 say a lot, and two of them are in the NFL HOF..

This team had three HOF players in Faneca, Bettis and Polamalu. HOF coach with Cowher. This team also had James Harrison and Hines Ward..two other potential HOF players. Once you shut down the running game, that shut down the play action pass / bootleg rollouts, and Jake Plummer could not throw from the pocket or shotgun formation to save his life. I think Coach Shanahan realized that the Broncos had gotten as far as they could with Plummer at QB, and therefore drafted Jay Cutler in the 2006 draft. I personally believe Pat Bowlen should have given Coach Shanahan another year (I think Cutler would have had a much better career had he stayed in Denver with Coach Shanahan the entire time), but it is what it is. Its ok...we ended up sucking so bad with Josh McDaniels that it put us in a position to draft Von Miller, and a lack of franchise QB on our roster allowed to sign Peyton Manning as a free agent...so it all worked out at the end of the day!

    I am a Broncos fan, and I'm a Jake Plummer fan. I appreciate him more as time passes. However, he really blew this game. The offense needed a leader, and Jake was unprepared and overwhelmed. You can't blow a conference championship game at home when you're favored. Shanny drafted Jake's replacement a few months later in Jay Cutler and that was it for Jake in Denver.

  • @Utuubuploader2012
    @Utuubuploader2012 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Also in rewatching this I don’t think you can blame Jake Plummer too much even though he’s an easy target for criticism. He was under constant duress and a combination of poor play from the O-line and poor play calling was mostly to blame. This would be Plummer’s final career postseason start.

    Steelers only won three AFC championship games by avoiding Brady and the Patriots all three times. Lost to them during the 2005 and 2010 regular seasons at home and in 2008 Brady was out for the year. Path of least resistance.
    Also, both of these teams, the Steelers and the Broncos, actually missed the playoffs the following season, as did the NFC runners-up from 2005, the Panthers.
