    We have had an argo huntmaster for about a year and a half now( love it) , and plan to run it mostly in winter because that's when we have the time to play.. we have the 18 " rubber tracks and it will go pretty much anywhere in snow..the part I like the most is that you can stop in a place( that you would have to air lift an average snowmobile out of )….and just idle away...and if you break through the ice its not a big deal as long as the drain plugs are in and your not overloaded....NOTE...(.and this is from experience)....if you are operating on larger bodies of water in winter...carry the necessary equipment to winch yourself out in the event that you break through .. say when a tree for example is not available... an anchor of some sort that you can winch from..and this is very important when running on frozen surfaces ..argos are nose heavy ,if you break through and find yourself floating in deep water, where there is no chance of your tracks( or tires) touching bottom ,your going to have to pull yourself out backwards onto the ice, they will not crawl out on their own..( watch sills argo ice recovery)..argos are a fabulous machine, especially once you get to spend some time with them.... and get to to know them....just be careful where and when you use the amphibious aspect of the machine..hyopothermia is a real thing...being prepared is the best defence..don't go to far from shore unless your sure....

    Those tracks actually work good when you replace the soft all terrain tires with turf tires instead. The side wall being more rigid robs less power, and the tire tread is flat across the face contacting the track well.

    OK so let's clear some things up. You can get a quality Argo unit for $3000-$7500. You can use it on water or land for all types of hunting. Use it for utility or farming purposes as It generates plenty of power. Or have the baddest atv/utv available in which to make your buddies Hella jealous as if you have swampy gumbo mud like we do in southeast Texas and far west and southwest Louisiana, you'll spend alot of time pulling everyone else out..
    Only cons I can think of are;
    You won't be winning any races. Top speed I've seen is 35mph land, 2/3mph on water self propelled, and around 7mph is the max stable speed under trolling motor power (Mines 100lbs thrust on a tracked 27hp 8x8)
    And suspension. With exception to the new $30k model Noone can afford don't expect a Cadillac ride quality. Your tires air pressure is your suspension. Typically you'd run 15-20lbs of air. When I'm needing to soften the ride, I'll drop the tire pressure to 5-10. You'll soften the ride at a consequence of lowering ride height. My big comfy 8x8 rides pretty soft at 12lbs of air with tracks.
    Pro's;
    Go anywhere. When you eventually possibly get stuck add tracks, and go anywhere. I go through stuff that would literally swallow my tundra. None of my buddies will even attempt to follow me because they now "know".
    Pricing is farely low if you are patient and look thoroughly.
    Maintenance is cheaper than the other atv's and utv's. Parts can be bought anywhere really. Even the gas station lol.
    Finally its the funnest thing you'll ever operate. Especially with the trolling motor and the tracks. And basically any motor with the same common sized output shaft can have the clutch changed over so the sky's the limit. Even the small Mahindra 2 cylinder motors swap and are bad ass

    Great review. This machine appears to check all of the right boxes - except for the rather steep price.

    Awesome machines but after seeing the performance of the Russian sherp I would go for the sherp if one can afford it ! 80 to 90 thousand for the sherp and I think the avenger is around 25 thousand if not more for extras. Also I hear the Argos have greatly improved their reliability .apparently the sherps requires a lot less maintenance. Thanks for the video.

    • @RMW
      @RMW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robin Lessard thanks for watching, sherp is definately one of the atv leaders

    • @justinbcole564
      @justinbcole564 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yea my $4500 unit will do everything and maybe more than the new ones and I would go so far as to say better than the sherp. Sherps is faster. That's all. The sherp wouldn't fit down most the trails I ride which are many in number and long in length (we have a 22 mile trail lol). In water it seems even more awkward than the Argo (which unless you have a trolling motor, which I have a 100lbs thrust, you steer mostly by leaning not with steering). So being the sherp is big and heavy doubt it's gonna lean steer. And 4 wheels instead of 8 with tracks... I've had a few rubber tire amphibious vehicles. Here's why I demand tracks... Trying to climb out of water onto anything but smooth sand or snow is difficult. With the back of your amphibious machine just floating its almost impossible to get the machine lined up straight to climp out and even if you do you'll spend most of your time uncontrollably bouncing off the bank. With tracks on the other hand and lol the trolling motor it's nothing to hold yourself steady and as long as you can make both tracks touch your going forward... And at the price of $4500 compared to the Sherps large price tag I'd have to say I'd go Argo... No matter what

    You can go into the countryside almost anywhere in Canada and sooner or later you'll see an Argo in the back yard. Not like everyone has one, but they're around everywhere. People have ones that are over 20 even 30 years old and still running. That really long term reliability (no replacement sales) and their old fashioned design really hurt sales.
    The price is a real problem with the new one though. Pretty much only for a few rich and outfitters who have hunting camps for rent.
    It used to be something Russians would like. Not fancy, not expensive or complicated, but durable and reliable. Sadly they've gone the higher end route. But maybe that's a must if they're going tracked? Dunno, bit I'll never be able to afford one.

  • @4by4squared88
    @4by4squared88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Forget the Argo, forget the Sherp. Look at the new Fat Truck. It puts them both to same. I know, I own all three and nothing comes close to the FT. The Sherp has a five speed, clutch, gas pedal and skid steer. The FT has a hydrostatic transmission and everything is controlled by a joy stick. It’s made in Canada with 60 percent American parts. Where the Sherp has maybe 4 options and AC not being one of them. The FT has maybe 25 options and a killer AC that will freeze you out. I always had issues with my Argo after duck season. The water would get in the gears and it got very costly to repair. One year after the season it was $3000.

    I use an older model of 8x8 Argo for moose, bear & deer hunting in very challenging terrain. On granular material or snow they are great but on tarmac, non granular or high grip road type surface they are a REALLY rough ride. There is so much grip that without loose material under the wheels or tracks they are just a horrible ride. In the water, the machine feels stable with three adults but gets tippy with 4. They can barely move in water with just tires to push them along. With tracks there is zero water motion....Most of the time with either wheels or tracks you simply cavitate & sit still. There is ZERO ability to steer in water...take an oar with you! You WILL need an outboard motor with the motor mount for water use. In swamp the machine works well with wheels provided the root mat of vegetation does not break up. In yucky mud, with just wheels you get nowhere fast. With tracks in a swamp, muskeg or mud, the machine is like a tank....virtually unstoppable. The trick with ARGO is to chuck the machine at the terrain & obstacles like it is a sledge hammer. If you are timid...this is NOT the ride for you. Maintenance costs are high. bearings, seals, chains...grease & chain lube is 1 hour for every 8 of use MINIMUM....from experience I have figured you cannot apply enough grease to the bearings!...the more the better keep squiring that stuff in there to flush the crap out. Tires need tubes but the newer ones have bead lock tubeless....even so I would immediately install tubes in all wheels from day one.

    I just recently purchased a 2000 Argo conquest machine, and it is a pretty good machine! However I would like to see a steering system like International crawler tractors have-when the operator pulls the steering clutch back part way, that track goes about half speed thus making a good gradual turn and yet applying power to both tracks.

    • @jasondueck6302

    The biggest downside if the price especially when you start adding accessories like the top and tracks. they are nice and have great performance in mud and snow and calm water. one thing ive always been skeptical about is their performance in the water if there is any current. because the only propulsion you have is the tread on the tires and a paddle if you bring one if you get caught in a current you can end up in some trouble. if you get a chance retest this in the summer around a swamp and river area and let us know what you think then. honestly Id rather build my own tracked atv for under $1000 (like the video you had a while back) and put in props attached to a pto drive out the rear of the hull for propulsion against the current. mostly because I live close to a river system and am more likely to need a way to cross said strong current.

    • @RMW

      +Peter Peterson if you live among the rivers maybe it will be better to use hovercraft or atv like sherp

    i have a 18hp kohler 8x8 30 years old and still strong hunt with it for moose in muskeg aka swamp where no quad as they call them can go it was 7000 dollars 30 years ago you almost need to be a heavy equipmrnt operator to understand and maintain one or mechanic never broke a chain double strand number 60 chain in there for the drives,blew a bearing in the front part 45 miles up in the swamp and youl wish your a mechanic,youl be upside down so much working on it to change out the bearing that your eye ball are going to want to pop out of your head been there done that.when looking at one open the hood and look at the front motor section and look way down at the front bearing section and ask yourself if i breakdown in the middle of alaska how aim i going to fix that if your alone from experience bring alote of tools hand cleaner lots of grease down there and the part to replace it but a very good machine like i said maintenace is key but if you break down in the midle of no where get ready to walk or make a fire and start changing the part out. be safe
