@@ellawowowow omg mitski didn’t actually invent music?!? what horrible misinformation! 🙄 y’all gotta find some actually important shit to get mad about
Finally, I was waiting for this explanation in particular since it’s probably my favorite song from the album! It’s so beautiful and intriguing, and it wasn’t my original favorite until I actually started listening to it, ironically, on a midnight walk alone, and it gave it some sort of haunting dimension, if that makes sense. It’s like it makes me hyper-aware of my own solitude at that instant, and it really puts me in a very contemplative mood, about the uncertainty of the future, and even of my present, which may sound sad, and maybe it is a bit, but mostly it is beautiful. Plus, the “then, of course, nothing replied, nothing speaks to you in the night” is probably one of the most incredible couplets I’ve ever heard, both lyrically and musically. For me it’s like the climax of the song, and listening to it feels like my brain is being scratched. I also love what it represents, that realization that, when you’re talking to yourself, or when you’re troubled and looking for an answer, you slowly realize you’re all alone and feel kind of silly, and maybe even slightly disappointed.
This is my favourite song on the album and I had assumed this was about a 'crossroads deal with the devil', which made it so haunting because in those stories people wish to trade their soul for some other-worldly skill but in this song they don't want anything in return - they just didn't want the weight of existence. Even with this explanation it's such a beautiful song and I love it so much
this is my fav song from the album. my interpretation of it is the need to unburden ourselves with our emotions to ease the hurt and pain, but that in turn also giving up our capacity to feel happiness. the line "you're a cage without me" captures that hollowness.
“sometimes its just so hard to carry the full weight of our existence and actually be fully accountable for it..” Wow, that explanation was just perfect. This song means a whole lot more to me now.
This is actually one of the best songs you made for this album, I sincerely love it and knowing more of the story of how it was made is really interesting❣️
I love this song, it haunts me through the interpretation of releasing control, which I struggle with, and making a deal with myself to give up a little of that control to the universe is so scary yet relieving.
This is my favorite song in the album and the first time I really listened to the lyrics, it made me think of a dark fairytale story, maybe because the bird metaphor really stands out to me; and sometimes when I read Russian fairytales, birds are often present. Like this one favorite book of mine where Koschei the Deathless assumed the form of a bird every night as he watches over Marya on the top of a tree and slowly lured her. And when I listen to the song it makes me think of Marya as she accepts marriage to Koschei, unaware of the coming circumstances. The Deal is such a great song, the melody and lyrics are so image-like and very atmospheric. Thank you Mitski! 💖
I was wandering alone since forever and also had an imaginary friend, the wind, and the wind took my childhood self away in order to avoid my pain. Since then I am just a cage, just a little piece of what I was once. This song made me cry so much, I never will get that part fully back, I can't get it back it was split off, I don't even remember my childhood. I am not that child matured but just a replacement.
you're definitely not, but i thought of depression, not necessarily so far as suicidal thoughts. to me it's always just a pure exhaustion over some kind of grief or sadness that's been wearing at you, and in forcing it down and hoping it'll just go away, you block out positive feelings too. not only that but the grief festers and infects anything good you could've felt had you simply let yourself be. and that's what seems to be happening in the story-"my soul, the epitome of my being has become a burden and i want to be rid of it, and i accept whatever consequences." the bird later says "you won't hear me singing" as singing no longer serves as something to fulfill the narrator, had it possibly been such prior to their state of grieving. they're also described as an empty cage which is definitely metaphorically pretty blatant (sorry i tend to rant in yt comments)
I really loved this album. I've had it on repeat for weeks. And I love Mitski's writing, especially when it comes to lyrics. This is so cool to get to know her thought process. I appreciate these videos a lot
I gave it a non dualistic kind of meaning my first listen. Exchanging your soul within the deal is actually giving up your ego. The bird, the night, and the deal itself resembles showing the listener a different perspective.
Last time when I walked home from a party and Iistened to her new album. And exactly when the church bell rang, this song startet and it was just the perfekt moment, like a sign or something. To me this song also reminds me of someone who has a hard time getting over things (romantic or other stuff), well and I happen to be like that, because I am also very nostalgic. And I thought what a relief it would be to get rid of the heavy burden of my soul. But then the second line hit me "you're a cage without me" and I knew it was good that I feel a lot. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I think I am not a person but just a bunch of mitski songs glued😊 together.
Yesss, thank you for this. This is my favourite song of the album and I was wondering about the meaning of the lyrics so really thank you. ❤ Love the musical composition too.
Mitski, this song is so perfect. Thank you for explaining the lyrics, but could you do another video where you talk about the chords and how you came up with the melody? That first chord is so unique, and I'd love to hear how you wrote it (the chord progression) and how the melody came into existence.
Mitski's story adds such a hauntingly beautiful layer to an already profound track. Her craftsmanship in songwriting and musical composition never ceases to amaze. Truly one of the best from the album! 🌙🎶
oh god. for the longest time i misunderstood this song as well in the same way mitski had misinterpreted that poem. i heard the lyrics ‘i need someone to take this sword’ and for me that sword was symbolic of the misdeeds and experiences that person had faced throughout their life, an object representative of a heavy burden. but in giving it away they were also giving away their purpose, the thing they had spent their entire life learning to do. i almost imagined a knight, and i guess the visual of streetlights was the only thing that brought me out of that. when i had found out what the lyrics were it didnt change much, as i still like imagining that knight struggling to find purpose outside of who they trained to be.
Mitski, I really love how you write songs ❤ im actually amateur at writing songs, and your behind the song are really inspiring to me! I love how everything in your song has a reason and it's not there just because ily
This is so interesting it’s such an beautiful meaning and story!! Lol I misinterpreted the song I thought it literally was about how life is hard and we have such emotions and existential questions and fear and our true self is our soul so we just can’t take it anymore we want to exist without a soul without emotions and anything.
This song is perfection and its on my top 3 songs of her new album and also one thing about Mitski that she have a relly divers beautiful taste she love shunji iwai she reads old poems she loves movies she is the best singer songwriter in the world I just love and Stan he every album and every song ar just flawless and outstanding
your way of beautifully yet at the same time intricately describing the smallest thing is truly a gift that I am thankful for you to willingly share with the world thank you mitski

Imagine misreading a line from a poem and your thought process proceeds to create such comforting and profound song. Thanks a lot, ma'am.
The Deal is objectively one of the best songs from the new album, it’s got such a dark and poetic atmosphere and the outro is fantastic❤️
This song is an underrated gem. So unique in how it sounds and the message is beautiful. Thank you mitski!!!!!
i listened to this song for 8 days straight, no other music, just this on repeat. the story it tells is so hauntingly beautiful and impactful
its just such a haunting and immerseful song, best off the album in my opinion.

I love this song, it haunts me through the interpretation of releasing control, which I struggle with, and making a deal with myself to give up a little of that control to the universe is so scary yet relieving.
I definitely saw it as giving up a part of oneself in the hopes of being able to fit into some bigger picture.

is it just me who thought it was about suicidal thoughts? the deal being giving up the beauty of life in exchange for peace from the horrors idk
