On of the things that I think Gary did well as Soval (either intentionally or not) was he depersonalized Vulcans. Prior to Enterprise there were precious few Vulcans on Star Trek, and all of them had been active in their respective story lines long enough to have developed personal relationships with their respective crews; Spock saw Kirk as Kirk, as a person, as a friend. Soval, on the other hand, saw and treated the humans as "others," as less than, he brought not just a paternalistic feel to the character, but something beyond that, a kind of "If Vulcans were a lesser species, we would keep you humans as pets, but since we recognize that you are, technically, sentient creatures, we will be gracious and treat you as though you are our metaphysical equals (even though we both know otherwise.)" It was a very interesting evolution on the species, and as I recall, it's one that not everybody in the fandom was especially appreciative of, I honestly think that the character of Soval did as much to define what it means to be a Vulcan as all the characters who came before him. He was a delightful and unique character to watch.
What I thought was best about the character was when you realized that he didn’t actually think that way, that he was working behind the scenes with Forrest whole portraying what the High Command wanted him to be. It both demonstrated the way that Vulcans were expected to think and showed they were capable of thinking for themselves.
@@rogueally7993 I think there was one scene where Forrest and Soval were talking about how Vulcans viewed Humans and he's like "You have the tendency to blow up like Klingons but then suddenly embrace logic" and Forrest twigs and says "oh, we also remind us of yourselves?" Soval does this knowing look - he's terrified underneath - but then you realise...he has been the entire time.
Just heard the bad news, absolutely gutted a great actor. I recently did a re-watch of Enterprise, I believe a rerun of Alien Nation is long overdue a brilliant show I wish more people would discover. /Salute
Stumbling into the George Burns years or not, Mr. Graham makes 71 look like his very early 50s. It's almost like playing a long lived Vulcan slows down the aging.
Rewatching this awesome episode after hearing we lost this great actor today. 🖖🏼 Love his star trek song that you foks use as the theme. Wish I could find the song on TH-cam to stream as it is a real earworm. 🎶🎵
I agree. One scene that comes to mind is in The Forge, when Soval mind melds with the guard to try to find out who the bomber was, even though it was a risk to his career, and then Soval boldly admits to the Vulcan administrator, yes, I mind melded with him.
It really must be hard to play a Vulcan, i admire Leonard Nimoy, Gary Graham, Jolene Blalock and Tim Russ for doing it in such a nuanced way. It would be cool to see T'Pol in Strange New Worlds since she has a large lifespan.
For sure. So much of our dialogue, intentions and communication relies heavily on our emotions which, in turn, show up on our faces, the tension in our voice, etc. To have to act without being able to use those tools to play your part? You’ve got to have something to pull that off.
Connor knowing his trek trivia warms my heart. Neat to finally know who sings your groovy little theme song too! The 'It's Star Trek y'all!' bit is my favourite part. Thanks for another fun episode guys, happy Shuttlepod Sunday to ya!~ 🖖
Gary so glad you got that last minute clarification on the Vulcans, tense as it must have been for you! Ambassador Soval was played fantastically, he made you hate him but then we got to see real depth in later eps. Great episode guys! And Dom don't worry, we ALL remember the pineapple episode 😂
