    Welcome to LondonCityGirl -- today we're going to countdown the Top 10 Most Controversial Films of All Time
    At no. 10 is In the Realm of the Senses (1976) - Based on a true story this Japanese film is the tale of a dangerously sensual love affair between an inn keeper and his servant girl. The graphic sex scenes shocked audiences.
    At no. 9 is Lolita (1962) and Lolita (1997) - Lolita started out as a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, chronicling the story of a man's obsession with a 12 year old girl. It had two major adaptations, a 1962 version by Stanley Kubrick and 1997 version by Adrian Lyne.
    At no. 8 is the Passion of the Christ (2004) - The Passion of the Christ directed by Mel Gibson was released in 200. The film focused on the, torture, death, and resurrection of Jesus and was criticized for its graphic violence and was also accused of being anti-semetic.
    At no. 7 is The Birth of a Nation (1915) - The Birth of a Nation is a silent epic which tells the story of two families during and after the American Civil War.
    At no. 6 is Basic Instinct (1992) - Basic Instinct was directed by Paul Verhoeven and the film starred Sharon Stone who played a seductive serial killer.
    At no. 5 is Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - Cannibal Holocaust is told in a found footage style. A film crew crew goes into the depths of the Amazon to film cannibalistic tribes. The film was banned in several countries and director Ruggero Deodato's film license was revoked for three years.
    At no. 4 is The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) - Martin Scorsese's masterpiece depicted Jesus as a man who faced the same temptations as other men most notably lust. Scenes which showed Jesus engaged in sexual activity with Mary Magdalene caused outrage.
    At no. 3 is Natural Born Killers (1994) - Natural Born Killers is the story of an unhinged couple who go on a killing spree and are raised to the status of cult folk heroes by the modern media.
    At no. 2 is Last Tango in Paris (1972) - Last Tango in Paris stars Marlon Brando as a grieving widow who has a passionate anonymous affair with a young French woman played by Maria Schneider. The scene that caused the most controversy was when Marlon Brando used butter as a lubricant prior to anal sex.
    At no. 1 is a Clockwork Orange (1971) - Director Stanley Kubrick created a visually arresting world in the dystopian classic a Clockwork Orange. We follow the character of Alex who with his gang of friends embark on a spree of "ultra violence".
    There were allegations of the film causing copy cat violence and it was named in two cases of assault and one gang rape.
    But of course this list is not exhaustive, there are many other controversial films, for example Salo, A Serbian Film and even the relatively tame The Da Vinci Code had its fair share of controversy.
    Do you agree with our list? Do you think we missed anything out? How would you order them?

    The Human Centipede - one of the worst, most outrageous, sickening movies i've ever seen. It disturbed me on a personal level! Not worth anyone's time and money at all. XD lool

      ***** True - it was a shocking film. I think the sequel failed miserably which is good - it crosses the line!

    • @TheGunnCat

      The Human Centipede was pretty humorous. It was so ridiculous, it's hard not to laugh at how preposterous it really is. A Serbian Film however, is a whole different ball of wax. Truly a disturbing film.

      @@LondonCityGirl I actually think the sequel was far better written and shot, with an overall better "storyline", as ridiculous as it was.
      #3? Just over the top satire...

      @@TheGunnCat A Serbian Film, as hard as it was to watch, is a pretty good film. Definitely (should have been?) more controversial than any on this list.

      Disturbed me not at all - it was just a very bad movie with an extremely silly plot and some sick effects ... same with the second one. For me it was the same with a Serbien filmn - simply could not take either of them seriously which made it easy for me to not be immersed at all.

    A clockwork orange is my favourite!!! And it's basically the most controversial film on the list, cause it's PG (of course), it's not R it's actually X RATED.

    Imo Battle Royale is missing on the list. Great movie which speaks against violence but unfortunately misunderstood to do the opposite.

      thejoker0123 The Exorcist is most definitely one of my favourite films of all time too :) I like Clockwork Orange a lot, it's a bit uncomfortable to watch but the film is superb, as is all of Stanley Kubrick's films imo. I haven't seen Kubrick's version of Lolita although I watched the one starring Jeremy Irons the other day - v.creepy.

    On Lolita: in the book, she was around 12, because she was described as someone who looked very similar to Humphrey's school-time sweetheart. Sue Lyon, during filming, was 13. This was deliberate, not a problem with censorship.
    EDIT: Ages. I had thought that Lolita was 14, she was 12, I also added the bit about Sue Lyon.

    • @LondonCityGirl
      @LondonCityGirl  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PlayLIekIdiots No, in the book she is 12. Kubrick's film is deliberately vague about stating Lolita's age and the censors were adamant with the director that the actress chosen should give the appearance of being at least 14 to meet the MPAA standards.

    • @PlayLIekIdiots
      @PlayLIekIdiots 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LondonCityGirl You are entirely correct, sorry. I corrected my comment, thank you. But thirteen definitely is not far off from 12, as you're video made it seem.
      From Kubrick interview: " ... Nobody bothered really to read the description that Humbert Humbert gave of Lolita... and uh, they got this impression that... it was an interesting example of mass delusion, because people imagined her to be 9-10 years old, but theres a very clear description in the book of Annabel, his childhood sweetheart, and he says, in the narrative, that if there was no Annabel, there was no Lolita, and that when he sees Lolita, she's a perfect reincarnation of Annabel. And Annebell is described as, uh, 12 years... Well, Lolita was described as, 12 and a 3 months when he first meets her, and the story progresses through quite a few years... And Sue Lyon was just 13 when me started filming."

      LondonCityGirl I know this is odd to ask, but can you actually buy the Cannibal Holocaust movie in the U.S., because I like to challenge myself to watch some of the weirder movies that no one else would dare watch. Because I know that the Squidward's Suicide video is on TH-cam, it's the actual thing, because it has the murder photos. But anyway, do you know if you can actually buy the movie?

      LondonCityGirl - Knowledge I heard that in the 1962 film version of "Lolita," the character was supposed to be 17 years old, not 14, or 12 (her age in the book).

      Also that movie Irreversible where the guy rapes the woman in a hallway which is a very long scene that made many viewers uncomfortable at how the man raped and hit the woman

    • @MarkoH01
      @MarkoH01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@evilspin If I am not mistaken she was not hit - she was raped. Still think that it is interesting that people think that THIS is the most extreme scene in this brilliant movie. Much more important is what happened before and after the rape scene ... remember that he movie is told backwards and see what gets destroyed in just one night.
