    It is generally best practice for the OSB wall sheathing to cover the sill plate, band joist, and wall framing in one piece. This provides better structural integrity.
    Look at images of mobile homes after a tornado or high wind. The floor and frame are usually intact but the rest of the home is gone. This is because the wall studs and bottom plate are only connected by nails or screws. Overlapping all the framing with one sheet of sheathing adds a lot of strength. You can still add some hurricane straps on the outside of the wall framing to the band joist, just make sure the straps are connected to 2x6 wall studs with screws through the OSB wall sheathing and into the band joist.
    Tape all the sheathing seams with ZIP Panel System Tape before adding house wrap.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good comment. That said my neighborhood doesnt seem to be prone to tornado type winds. So far no neighbors here for many years have lost homes. If you note when I put the osb on it is screwed into the bottom sill plate of the home. While not a guarantee against severe winds it should help a great deal I figure.

    With an inexpensive block and tackle setup you could have raised that sheet with your pinky. I used such a setup to raise and lower 3 kayaks in my long narrow shed. Worked well for the 17 years I owned the property. Great to see you moving to get dried in. You have an excellent eye for details. I don't know anything about the other eye though. Maybe it had something to do with Mission Impossible. Thanks for a great video, Don!

    One last dig. Your headers are undersized and you need two trimmer studs at each end for headers over 6'

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for all of the critique. Both valuable and premature. In the end there are not only 2 but 3 trimmer studs in place. This will be viewable in an upcoming video where I clearly state I revised the procedure in order to indeed make the frames more sturdy. I definitely will take the undersized header comment seriously. I made the header according to research the bare minimum size. You are correct and I will beef it up.

    With the quantity of exterior siding work, maybe invest in a section of scaffold, maybe on wheels?

    OSB, house wrap, windows, flashing, exterior siding, roofing, gutters, I vote for scaffold of some type.

      The standard method to do the sheathing is to leave the 4x8 sheets intact and stagger them. Naturally because of the stud placement you need to have two 4x4 sheets one at each end. It comes down to having the structure more solid with unbroken sheets.

    So many questions….. why can’t you put the roof on first to keep the water off the floor and walls??

    Rent scaffolding. Cheaper than hospital visit.

    So Don...
    I am wondering...If your wall sill plates are screwed down to the Advantech or vice versa and you have properly caulked the plates with building adhesive as well and now have OSB exterior sheathing up, how will you squeegee the water out? Have you cut a temporary gap in the floor somewhere to push the water out and onto a slide to carry it away from the foundation? Are you using a shop vac or how are you getting the rainfall out now? I wish you had made it easier on yourself by just framing the walls up and bracing them temporarily in order to get a roof on asap. I worry about how you can get the rain water out of the house now...could you please enlighten us in your next video? When you poke a moisture meter into the Advantec after it is squeegee off and dry from the 90 degree heat, what percentage of moisture is the floor reading? As always, " there is more than 1 way to skin a cat", but I am curious about the floor situation now that there is such a limited air flow to dry it out with the OSB up. If it weren't monsoon season, the air would be hot and dry...but instead it is humid air...please let us know about that and I am guessing that the reason you completely covered your window rough outs was to add shear strength until you finish the roof?
    It is SO GREAT that improvements in quality of building material choices such as the Simpson framing screws, the Advantech Flooring and the various brands of composite quick shims, not to mention the vast array of wonderful and powerful cordless power tools...it sure makes a difference from when we had to race to get things done against the elements and be forced to take time to make ledger boards, scaffolding and run generators for tools. It's fun to show folks your " MacGyverisms"...you would fit right in out in the missionary field where Duct Tape is King and Quick Clamps would overthrow the monarchy! ;)

      Hi Sheridan. Yes the Advantech is screwed down securely to the sill plates with 4" Timberlock hex screws. Plus 3" Large flat head Timberlock screws. Plus 3.5" regular screws. This is done in every 16" on center area. Always appreciate you Bro.

    doing so well for a old un but why not put a temp tarp over the foof to keep your flooring dry

      Excellent question. I did that and the water seeped around the edges of the tarp and soaked into the sill plate. So I abandoned the idea.

    Curious why you didn’t do the roof first, would keep the rain from sitting in there every day potentially ruining the floor. If I missed it I apologize.

      Excellent question. Even though I braced the walls the heavy 2x6 walls seemed to be unstable and adding the huge weight of a roof would have made the whole structure a bit on the shakey side. Once the walls were covered in OSB then the whole structure became solid I found. Thanks for watching.

    It appears the Simpson framing screws you used are not approved for installing hurricane straps. The approved screw is called a connector screw and has a hex head.

      Hi Dan. I also use Hex head 4" screws to batten down the sill plate to the floor structure but those are not visible in this particular video. Thanks for watching!

    You probably should block those trusses over the wall as you have missed the bearing point of the trusses
