Plays like 300 shows a year EVERY year....has had Elton Johns band as his backing Unit....20 top hits....did a movie with Meryl Streep.....what more does it take? The guy is legit and, at times, the material is BRILLIANT.
14 year old me is freaking out that you were sitting that close to my biggest crush ever, Rick Springfield! His was the first concert I went to with friends and NOT with parents. The Greg Kihn Band opened. This was before reserved seating, it was all general admission and I was sure I was going to be smashed in the crush pushing toward the stage the whole show. My friend and I got there hours early to be the first through the door. I think we were #3 and #4 through the door we were at. We stood right at the stage and it was awesome even though I could barely breathe! A dream come true.
Rick Springfield is a funny guy. I did concert sound for years and I worked his show at a local venue in the early 2000s where he had such fun going out into the crowd and engaging fans to the point where he saw someone holding a phone up so for someone to hear the song. Well he sees this and asked for the phone and has some banter with the person on the other end and makes it part of the show. I was only expecting a nostalgia act with his couple of hits but he really impressed me with his charisma and engaging showmanship.
I love Rick Springfield...he was my first concert, but I hate it how the only Rick song you hear on the radio is Jessie's Girl. He has so many great songs and yes, "Affair of the Heart" is one of them.
Springfield's entire Living in Oz album is amazing! I felt a continuity with the songs that I just knew that Rick wrote these songs himself! Even though I was a young man at the time, I totally related and knew where he was coming from with these songs!

Rick Springfield was my mid 80s hero. His Tao record is perfect from beginning to end, no filler here. Even his 88s Rock of life record is highly appreciated.
He has again hit similar peaks,in my opinion on "Shock Anger, Denial" and other later works ("The Serpent King" is brilliant...although dismissed because of its pessimism)...but he has done so much stellar work. Only a few duds.
I like Springfield's Affair of the Heart along with his other hits. The song of his which had a tremendous heyday in the early 80s, but has totally vanished since, is Love is Alright Tonight. I simply can't understand why. It's catchy, exhilarating and has everything to make it a timeless classic. I hope soon it gets its deserved love and comes back to the 80s playlists.
Icehouse has a whole catalog of great 80s songs most Americans have never heard. Street Cafe, Cross the Border, Great Southern Land, Touch the Fire, Nothing Too Serious, etc.
Listen to The Killers cover of "Electric Blue" ... They covered this song as Icehouse originally recorded it, but with Brandon Flowers voice giving it a slight difference.
Men At Work were very talented- their success in the USA was off the scale and far in excess of how well they did in any other individual territory even though they were a phenomenon in many other countries. 'Down Under' is a stone-cold classic and both of their first two albums are really good. They knew how to play their instruments, write great melodies with Colin Hay's distinctive voice the icing on the cake. I bought their third album in a sale in 1989 and played the wonderful track 'Everything I Need' constantly for a long time. It still sounds great in 2022. 'Looking For Jack', Colin Hay's debut solo album is terrific, and should have made him a big solo star. 'Can I Hold You?' and 'Hold Me' were the two lead singles. It is a complete album with not one weak track. I saw him play a venue in London in 1995 to about 150 people, many of whom were talking and not paying much attention (ahead of their time in the days before smart phones). He was the consummate professional and I wondered how many of the audience truly knew the scale of MAW's success in the eighties. The Choir Choir Choir version of 'Down Under' performed with Colin is amazing, well worth checking out. Ditto the Pub Choir version of 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 From their "Cargo" album I also very much liked and like: "I Like To" -- love its energy with extended very '80's guitar part (the song's largely by their guitarist). "It's A Mistake" had a memorable music video: a soldier at a missile console stubs his cigar out on the button, launching nuclear missiles.
the original 'Down Under' was a much slower, lazy reggae song. . it wouldn't have grabbed you. .it was basically a novelty song. .props to the producer
"Captain of Her Heart" is mystery wrapped in simplicity. It's perfect. "Overkill" is one of the best pop songs ever written. Another great one by Men at Work is "Down By the Sea."
"Overkill" and "Captain of Her Heart" are definitely two fantastic songs that don't get played enough. I rediscovered both of them about five years ago when I was going through some struggles of my own. "Captain of Her Heart" is short but sweet and yes, it would fit beautifully into a movie or TV show. There were so many great songs in the '80s it's hard to narrow it down!
I thought that was by the singer of Brandy and was saying she was ready to let the captain go because his love was the sea..sure sounds like that singer!
I watched a video on this channel a couple of months ago because I was bored. This is my favorite now by a long shoot. Your knowledge and ability to keep viewers interested is truly outstanding
I've always thought Rick Springfield was underappreciated. He often is written off like a one-hit wonder, but he had tons of hits and four solid albums before depression took a dent out of his career.
Icehouse is one of my favorites from the 80's. So good. Crazy is my favorite song I like about everything they did-including album cuts. Saga is the most underrated band of the 80's to me. They charted a couple of songs in the US but they were much bigger in their native Canada. So many really great songs.
Wow you brought back my memories. I saw these guys when they were called "Flowers". Im an Aussie. They soon changed their name to Icehouse. Iva is a cool guy, loved him. I saw them as Icehouse, but I remember their pub days.
I rediscovered Overkill thanks to Colin's appearance in Scrubs. As soon as I heard it it unlocked a core memory and I fell in love with that song all over again. I have a greater appreciation for it being older as I understand the lyrics. I do prefer the acoustic version more than the original, such a beautiful composition!
I relate so much to the lyrics of Overkill. I’m going through such an important time in my teenagerhood, and sometimes it feels like too much. It’s just overkill.
100% agree with everything you said Ken. The placement in Scrubs was brilliant, especially given the storyline of that particular episode. The acoustic is even more emotional and enjoyable to me than the original.
I couldn’t stand The Captain of Her Heart back in the day but now, I really like it. Affair of the Heart is a great song. When all of the cover bands in our area were playing, Jessie’s Girl, we would like to go deep and this was one of the songs we pulled out. It always went over extremely well and everyone loved it! What a great list in general. All of the songs are timeless and have had some sort of cultural impact through the years
The Professor nails it AGAIN! Such underrated classics. I love all 3 Aussie bands you mentioned! Overkill is MAW's best song, and my favorite as well. Got to see them in Phoenix in late 1983 and Colin acoustic a few years ago. Had a chance to see The Church in a small club in South Florida in 1988...and didn't go. That was a gross oversight. Electric Blue (and Crazy) turned me onto Icehouse in 1988. Iva and his band still tour Australia. Seeing them there is truly a bucket list item for me...
Bruh, the whole When in Rome album is a goldmine, start to finish. I'm actually astonished that it didn't have more singles, since all of them could have been hits. Try "Child's Play" of "The Sight of Your Tears" (two of my faves).
The Captian of Her Heart was the opening song from an 80's best collection that my father bought when I was a kid and I fell in love with it the first time I heard this...
Overkill is one of the best songs of the 80s period. I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Hay at a concert...had him sign "it's just Overkill" for me. Just awesome.
Thank you for covering the Aussie bands. I saw all these guys when they were pub bands, before the big concerts. Saw them at concerts, but in the pubs you could talk to them, all great guys, just waiting for people to realise their greatness. Loved them then, love them now.
I love when I hear a song I haven't heard since I was a kid and it immediately gives me that nostalgic, almost homesick feeling! Electric blue just did that for me...as soon as it started I was 11 years old again!! Thank you for that!! It went right into my "liked" songs on Spotify.
About 15 years ago I walked into a bowling alley playing Digging Your Scene by The Blow Monkeys and had that feeling. Heard the song as a kid when it came out, and then it disappeared from my memory until that day. I now make it a point to listen to it often. Another song I could have put on my list.
IceHouse's Electric Blue is a FANTASTIC TUNE! I've been caught singing it or playing it many times by my kids and even strangers and they all say something to the effect of "That's a really great tune! Who sings it?"
I absolutely love the band men at work and cargo was always my favorite album by them and also dr. heckyll and mr. jive was also very underrated by them! also nice pick of songs i love hearing less common hits!
Thanks for asking Adam! I'm sure there's way more, but I filled up 5 slots quickly going through my playlist. 5) Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime - The Korgis 4) Bears - Zebra 3) The Dead Heart - Midnight Oil 2) When The Heart Rules The Mind - GTR 1) Common Ground - Rhythm Corps I have many more, but you already know all of the underplayed songs. Now, you can start the same kind of list for the 1970's with this one: Hypnotized - Fleetwood Mac
Great picks professor with great stories behind them. There are so many songs from the 80s that don't get play anymore but I love the fact I can just type in any song on TH-cam and hear it within seconds. Keep doing these forgotten gems!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes! Much/Most of the 'New' music I've found since the early '90's are actually overlooked songs from the 70's and 80's previously unknown or underknown to me. There was so much great musics then. Wonderful pieces got misplaced in the busy shuffle.
I remember a minor single of Men at Work called Dr Heckle and Mr Jive. Those of you who likef Men at Work check out Colin Hays solo work. He has a song called 'Waiting for my real life to begin ' that put tears in my eyes.
Affair of the Heart and Overkill are two of the songs on my list of songs that I will never, ever skip over no matter how many times I hear them. I crank 'em, not skip 'em! Both are my favorite by each artist, at least until "Tao" came out.
I agree with most of your picks. All of MAW's hits aside (I love almost all of them). For me, "Down by the Sea" and "It's a Mistake" are my favorite underrepresented MAW songs. I agree with most of your picks. All of MAW's hits aside (I love almost all of them). For me, "Down by the Sea" and "It's a Mistake" are my favorite underrepresented MAW songs. I am also including some songs either lost in time or super rare that never got air play except on College Radio. I was a college DJ for several years in Alaska. The F.R.E.D. show featured alternative music (now referred to as retro) and I also co-hosted a punk show called Gene Poole. The following songs were lightly played on college campus, but made a huge impression on me and opened Pandora's box of music. In no particular order "Ghost Town" by The Rake's Progress "Coconut" by Widespread Panic "Whisper (to Natasha)" by What Is This "Cannonball" by The Breeders "Detachable Penis" by King Missile "Look at Me (Stop!" By Wire "Dedicated to Glam" by Icehouse "Michelle" by Clan of Xymox "Beast of Burden" by Attrition "Wild Women of Wongo" by The Tubes, Rods and Bulbs I'm amazed, delighted (and a little jealous) you are able to interview my favorite band members. Thank you Professor.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Colin Hay before a show here in Cincinnati. He was one of the coolest cats I’ve met. He was so gracious with his time. It was just nice to hang with a legend that contributed so much music to the soundtrack of my life.
These are great picks. Especially Captain of her Heart. What an awesome forgotten gem! Here are five for me that come to mind: 1. Harden My Heart -Quarterflash 2. Only The Lonely - The Motels 3. Leave It - Yes 4. Voices Carry - Til Tuesday 5. Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band
It's way past midnight, and I still can't fall asleep.... Great call on "Captain of her heart!" Definitely nailed that one. Took me for frickin ever back then to find out who sang that song..lol Also, gj on "Reptile." That album rules. "Antenna", is another great one on there... My "Top 5" 5) Thomas Dolby - "One Of Our Submarines" 4) The Cult - "Big Neon Glitter" 3) Billy Idol - "Don't Need A Gun" (and "All Summer Single" : ) 2) Donnie Iris - "Do You Compute?" 1) David + David - "Welcome To The Boomtown"
Risk Springfield has his own show on the 80s channel on SXM called "Working Class DJ" and he plays a lot of great songs beyond the 80s standards. And you're right, he's quite funny!
Colin Hay’s reinterpretation of “Overkill” (and the overlooked and underrated solo album of his, Man@Work) are masterpieces. A rare occasion where the “sequel” is better than the original. Easily Men At Work’s best song.
The whole Icehouse Man of Colours album is a 80 pop song masterpiece! Every song could've been a single as far as I'm concerned! I still throw on that album on time to time to this day! Same comments I made about Icehouse Man of Colours applies to The Church Starfish. Captain of Her Heart is on all my 80s playlists
These are my favorite underplayed hits of the 80s Destination unknown-Missing persons I won’t stand in your way-Stray Cats Chain Reaction-Journey A fine fine day-Toney Carey Yes- Hold On
@@ProfessorofRock You should do a series on behind-the-scenes legends or people that were very successful in music but weren’t necessarily household names. Tony Carey is an excellent example of that🎉
Five songs that do not get enough air play. 1. Martin Briley - The Salt In My Tears 2. Dwight Twilley - Girls 3. CC Catch - Backseat Of Your Cadillac 4. Golden Earing - Twilight Zone 5. Tommy Shaw - Girls With Guns
Thank you for showcasing some of the best Aussies of the 80’s, yes Rick Springfield is Aussie, he started in a group in the 60’s called Pink Zoot. You really need to add John Farnham, Your the Voice, his vocal rang is outstanding and sadly didn’t do as well as it should have in the US. Plus Cold Chisel with another Scottish lead singer Jimmy Barns, outstanding songs, you will remember Working Class Man, brilliant song from Barnsey
FYI Zoot was the name of the band( they dressed in pink and had a marketing campaign of "think pink") and it was started in 1964 with Rick joining in 1969 and doing 2 albums with them 1970 "Just Zoot" (it being an correction when the band was called "the zoot' erroneously" and 1971 Zoot Out.(actually released after their break up) Another member of Zoot, Beeb Birtles went on to form Little River band. Have a great day!
Im convinced that I heard each of these songs at least once each when they were new. "Overkill" was one of my favorites at age 3. Definite fond memories. My top 5 (in no particular order) includes: "Don't Answer Me" - Alan Parsons "In the Shape of a Heart" - Jackson Browne "I Can Dream About You" - Dan Hartman "Woman" - John Lennon "Let My Love Open the Door" - Pete Townshend
Electric Blue was one of the songs I put on a mixed tape trying to win over a girl. It never worked out but she got a hell of a tape. I personally love It’s a Mistake by Men At Work. Thanks again Prof!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 For whatever reason, Electric Blue wasn’t played on my local radio station back in 1987. So I only heard it at the grocery store. I also thought the singer was saying “Electrical” which made it really hard to figure out who the group was. 😝
My top 5 under the radar hits... XTC - Senses Working Overtime The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) The Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination Tears For Fears - Change INXS - Original Sin
OMG..you featured Rick Springfield!!!! I love Affair of the Heart and agree it needs to be played more. Living In Oz is my favorite Springfield album❤️❤️ Back to edit…and ICEHOUSE!!! One of my favorite underrated 80s bands! I’m loving this episode!!!!
5 not as well known hit-ish 80s songs in no particular order: Wouldn't it be Good? -- Nik Kershaw One of our Submarines -- Thomas Dolby Mexican Radio -- Wall of VooDoo Mirror in the Bathroom -- English Beat Punk Rock Girl - Dead Milkmen And yes, Overkill is the best Men at Work😍
Finally! Rick is one of my fave artists! You could do a few hours with that guy. Bit of trivia...Rick recorded a version of the Church song on here for a record years back of covers he did. It was a song he wishes he wrote. I had that Ice House record. Electric Blue is pop heaven!
I was going to bet that the urinal story was going to be about "Don't Talk to Strangers" as that title would make a lot of sense to fit the story... You're e right, PoR, "Overkill" was Men at Work's best song for sure!
Interesting, I never knew the origins behind this song. Shame that Rick is mostly known for this one tune, but I also rate "Human Touch" and "Don't Talk to Strangers" highly.
I love this channel since it brings back all the great songs of my childhood. I end up pausing the video to add songs to my playlist. I downloaded multiple ABC songs I had forgotten about along with different versions of Captain of Her Heart. Agreed, Overkill is Men at Work’s best song.
Rick Springfield is kinda like the Romantics with "What I Like About You" in that he had several real good hits that most people know about but they can only ever name "Jessie's Girl".
Yeah that’s because Jessie’s Girl is pretty much all the damn radio stations ever played. Maybe “Human Touch” for 5 minutes in 1985. But it wasn’t until I bought his G/H, in the mid 90’s, that I discovered all his other great songs
Electric Blue just recently came up in my feed as I was listening to music & I couldn’t believe it! I loved this song in the past & had forgotten all about it! A great song that definitely needs to be heard!
OMG Captain of My Heart, I’ve been trying to remember this song for years. The piano and sax together, it doesn’t get any better. I don’t know what triggered it, but the melody of this song has been on the edge of remembering for the past few years. I’ve tried everything to remember it, and it’s been driving me crazy. She on my playlist now and I owe you one. I agree with you about Overkill. By far it’s their best song, in my opinion that is. By the way I noticed that the majority of the songs on your list are from Australian bands. Any thoughts as to why?
Captain of Her Heart is such an amazing song. It tranquilizes me every time. The piano melody is one of the best ever. Just such a classic. Australians are unique, they are amazing, they are awesome!
I often find myself humming/singing " Electric Blue". I think it is the staccato delivery. And "The Captain of Her Heart" is one of those songs that really takes me back to the mellow aspect of the 80s.
I will say it again. Duran Duran is underapreceactiaed for thier skills at writing a song. Yes they were a pop sensation, but damn they could write a tune. Some of my favorite songs from that era.
Two songs by Canadian groups I listened to in the 80's have come back to revisit me. Don't know if they were big hits but I liked these better than some other stuff on the radio. Idle Eyes - Sandra, and Saga - On the Loose. Check them out Professor I'm sure you will like..
Under played songs of the 80s: Rolling Stones - She’s So Cold; The Police - Murder By Numbers; Stevie Wonder - Do I Do; Tina Turner - Look Me In The Heart; Huey Lewis/The News - Now Here’s You.
....ahhhh-OOOO!! ....LOVE "Look Me In The Heart"! ....I even bought the UK Single (as an Import), because I wanted it for me Tina 45 collection! ...GOOD choice!
Captain of Her Heart has always been in heavy rotation for me. I love that song. Also, Men at Work’s Upstairs in My House and I Like To have always been favorites off of Cargo that we never heard on the radio. Love those songs.
Yes! I've loved "Upstairs In My House" and "I Like To" as wonderfully energetic very 80's guitar riff patterns and have loved their singing and lyrics too.
Captain is a hypnotic song. Right along with We Don't Need Another Hero takes me to a specific time and home I lived in. I close my eyes and drift off into a hypnotic trance of memories. Love that song so much.
I don't know if it's by accident, but today you have a lot of Australian legends in this video Adam. Thanks for this great video!!! G'day from Australia my friend! No Zenni eyewear available here!! Australians do like to take the piss😄!!!!! Icehouse also had "Nothing Too Serious" & "Crazy" on the same album which were both really big hits here in Australia. That TAPE got a lot of plays in our Ford Falcon in the late 80's!! While they were still named Flowers they had "Walls " & "We Can Get Together" as big hits. Please also look up : Mondo Rock (Band) - "Come Said the Boy" or "State of the Heart" : Cold Chisel (Band) - Bow River or Forever Now or anything on the "East" or "Circus Animals" Albums - Hound Dog is one of my obscure favourites. Huuuuge bands here in Australia which need a lot more international love!!
Love it! Cargo was the very first cassette I ever purchased with my own money (allowance). Loved the whole album and completely agree with you about Overkill being their best song.

I've always thought Rick Springfield was underappreciated. He often is written off like a one-hit wonder, but he had tons of hits and four solid albums before depression took a dent out of his career.
Love Rick Springfield 💜 I've been lucky to see him at least 10x in concert!
Only twice for me...
Great to see some fantastic Aussie Bands with classics that were staples of my teenage years growing up in NZ....
I can’t get over how handsome Rick Springfield is. Aging like a fine wine.
I say it before, and I will say it again: Inspiration will come from anywhere and everywhere haha! No doubt these songs are legendary!
Mostly true- inspiration can come from just about anywhere except where you look for it- no one is ever inspired by what they expect to be inspired by
I never thought Affair of the Heart had anything to do with a bathroom!
Same here.....The Scrubs version is the best version....I saved it to my phone.....Love Colins singing...
It perfectly underscored and complimented the storyline. I can definitely relate to the song.
Overkill is my favorite by Men At Work.
All of the songs are timeless and have had some sort of cultural impact through the years
It’s such a catchy song.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Which one?
The Professor nails it AGAIN! Such underrated classics. I love all 3 Aussie bands you mentioned! Overkill is MAW's best song, and my favorite as well. Got to see them in Phoenix in late 1983 and Colin acoustic a few years ago. Had a chance to see The Church in a small club in South Florida in 1988...and didn't go. That was a gross oversight. Electric Blue (and Crazy) turned me onto Icehouse in 1988. Iva and his band still tour Australia. Seeing them there is truly a bucket list item for me...
Rick Springfield is an Aussie as well..
3 of my favorite 80's songs are by Icehouse. The 2 you mentioned and "No Promises"
Aussies rock!!!
One song I think is criminally overlooked is "The Promise" by When in Rome. Great piano part, and just overall fantastic song.
Ending scene of Napolean Dynamite. Classic!
I LOVE The Promise!
Love it!
Bruh, the whole When in Rome album is a goldmine, start to finish. I'm actually astonished that it didn't have more singles, since all of them could have been hits. Try "Child's Play" of "The Sight of Your Tears" (two of my faves).
@@joshtiscareno1312 I never did get the album, but with streaming, I can listen to it now. I will look into that.
I got both of the Men at Work tapes for 8th grade graduation gifts. Overkill and Its a Mistake were some of my favorites back then.
The Captian of Her Heart was the opening song from an 80's best collection that my father bought when I was a kid and I fell in love with it the first time I heard this...
That is so cool to hear!
Overkill is one of the best songs of the 80s period. I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Hay at a concert...had him sign "it's just Overkill" for me. Just awesome.
I listen to these classics all the time!! They never get old, timeless!!
It’s a song that you just never get tired of. That’s how much I love it.
Reptile is one of the greatest songs of all time. Overkill is magic. Aussie bands are great. I also love Hoodoo Gurus.
IceHouse's Electric Blue is a FANTASTIC TUNE! I've been caught singing it or playing it many times by my kids and even strangers and they all say something to the effect of "That's a really great tune! Who sings it?"
I love introducing other people at my school to this song and when they recognize it I get instantly elated.
I absolutely love the band men at work and cargo was always my favorite album by them and also dr. heckyll and mr. jive was also very underrated by them! also nice pick of songs i love hearing less common hits!
You guys are all killin it with great choices. I need to listen to a bunch of these again.
Thanks for asking Adam! I'm sure there's way more, but I filled up 5 slots quickly going through my playlist.
5) Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime - The Korgis
4) Bears - Zebra
3) The Dead Heart - Midnight Oil
2) When The Heart Rules The Mind - GTR
1) Common Ground - Rhythm Corps
I have many more, but you already know all of the underplayed songs. Now, you can start the same kind of list for the 1970's with this one:
Hypnotized - Fleetwood Mac
Great picks professor with great stories behind them. There are so many songs from the 80s that don't get play anymore but I love the fact I can just type in any song on TH-cam and hear it within seconds. Keep doing these forgotten gems!
Thanks My Name. Will do.
It is why I love digging in to the work of specific artists and discovering their hidden gems over the years.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 yes if I really like a song I always try to find time to listen to the album to see what other music they have
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes! Much/Most of the 'New' music I've found since the early '90's are actually overlooked songs from the 70's and 80's previously unknown or underknown to me. There was so much great musics then. Wonderful pieces got misplaced in the busy shuffle.
@@MyName-pl7zn For sure. I do the same thing.
Voy is one of most underrated voices ,so powerful and clear voice..i love great southern land, crazy and some others
In no particular order
"Ghost Town" by The Rake's Progress
"Coconut" by Widespread Panic
"Whisper (to Natasha)" by What Is This
"Cannonball" by The Breeders
"Detachable Penis" by King Missile
"Look at Me (Stop!" By Wire
"Dedicated to Glam" by Icehouse
"Michelle" by Clan of Xymox
"Beast of Burden" by Attrition
"Wild Women of Wongo" by The Tubes, Rods and Bulbs
I'm amazed, delighted (and a little jealous) you are able to interview my favorite band members. Thank you Professor.
Both super underrated. Love Mistake.
I hear "Overkill" at work almost every day and it always makes me smile. It has always been my favorite by Men At Work.
"Reptile" is a nearly flawless song. The production and the structure of the song are simply amazing.
The riff is so amazing.
Just about to say the riff is great
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Colin Hay before a show here in Cincinnati. He was one of the coolest cats I’ve met. He was so gracious with his time. It was just nice to hang with a legend that contributed so much music to the soundtrack of my life.
He always comes across well. Good anecdote.
He’s a very nice man.
These are great picks. Especially Captain of her Heart. What an awesome forgotten gem! Here are five for me that come to mind:
1. Harden My Heart -Quarterflash
2. Only The Lonely - The Motels
3. Leave It - Yes
4. Voices Carry - Til Tuesday
5. Jeopardy - Greg Kihn Band
Big Country ?
Forgotten? I hear those songs on the radio all the time
All great songs! LOOOOOOOOVE Voices Carry!
I really like these, except - bag Jeopardy.
Replace it with some Donny Iris - probably "Ah! Leah!", or maybe "Love is Like a Rock". :)
What an album 90125 was by Yes. Leave It, It Can Happen To You, Changes and Owner Of A Lonely Heart.
Agree overkill is their best song. These songs are all underplayed!
Overkill isn’t just my favorite MaW song, it’s one of my favorite songs ever. I still blast the ‘I can’t get to sleep!!’ after the bridge. Love it.
It's such a great vocal!!!
...same here, Man....ONLY listened to it at NIGHT, so it told me everything right THERE! ....ha-HAA!!
My favorite part of the song!!!
It's way past midnight, and I still can't fall asleep....
Great call on "Captain of her heart!" Definitely nailed that one. Took me for frickin ever back then to find out who sang that song..lol Also, gj on "Reptile." That album rules. "Antenna", is another great one on there...
My "Top 5"
5) Thomas Dolby - "One Of Our Submarines"
4) The Cult - "Big Neon Glitter"
3) Billy Idol - "Don't Need A Gun" (and "All Summer Single" : )
2) Donnie Iris - "Do You Compute?"
1) David + David - "Welcome To The Boomtown"
Risk Springfield has his own show on the 80s channel on SXM called "Working Class DJ" and he plays a lot of great songs beyond the 80s standards. And you're right, he's quite funny!
Yes. I try to listen as.much as possible
Electric blue I always hear on the radio. One my fav 80s songs
Colin Hay’s reinterpretation of “Overkill” (and the overlooked and underrated solo album of his, Man@Work) are masterpieces. A rare occasion where the “sequel” is better than the original. Easily Men At Work’s best song.
Living in Oz probably my favorite Rick Springfield record!!
Thank you so much for bringing up Electric blue. I absolutely loved the whole album.
These are my favorite underplayed hits of the 80s
Destination unknown-Missing persons
I won’t stand in your way-Stray Cats
Chain Reaction-Journey
A fine fine day-Toney Carey
Yes- Hold On
Good ones.
@@ProfessorofRock You should do a series on behind-the-scenes legends or people that were very successful in music but weren’t necessarily household names. Tony Carey is an excellent example of that🎉
Love Destination Unknown and Chain Reaction!
Yes Aim High Shoot Low The Call-Let The Day Begin
Good selection!! Tony Carey is awesome.
Glad you put Men ..no 1 here . Playing songs keeps greats alive. And the professor about as great as the great music itself.
Affair of the Heart! Yes! My favorite Rick Springfield song! I definitely agree!
Five songs that do not get enough air play.
1. Martin Briley - The Salt In My Tears
2. Dwight Twilley - Girls
3. CC Catch - Backseat Of Your Cadillac
4. Golden Earing - Twilight Zone
5. Tommy Shaw - Girls With Guns
Love "Salt In My Tears". The campy video cracks me up.
FYI Zoot was the name of the band( they dressed in pink and had a marketing campaign of "think pink") and it was started in 1964 with Rick joining in 1969 and doing 2 albums with them 1970 "Just Zoot" (it being an correction when the band was called "the zoot' erroneously" and 1971 Zoot Out.(actually released after their break up)
Another member of Zoot, Beeb Birtles went on to form Little River band. Have a great day!
Interesting cool video Professor! I never knew !
Great tracks from Icehouse. My Obsession is one of their best.
I agree. Great band!
Yes, great song! Icehouse is amazing.
Im convinced that I heard each of these songs at least once each when they were new. "Overkill" was one of my favorites at age 3. Definite fond memories. My top 5 (in no particular order) includes:
"Don't Answer Me" - Alan Parsons
"In the Shape of a Heart" - Jackson Browne
"I Can Dream About You" - Dan Hartman
"Woman" - John Lennon
"Let My Love Open the Door" - Pete Townshend
Great choices. Especially I Can Dream About you!
....DAMN! ...I forgot "Don't Answer Me"! ....killer tune!
What we're here for, @@RBS_. 👌
Don’t Answer Me is the bomb!!!
It was really good to see the interview clip of Colin Hays 👍
I really love his song “Maggie”.
Electric Blue was one of the songs I put on a mixed tape trying to win over a girl. It never worked out but she got a hell of a tape. I personally love It’s a Mistake by Men At Work. Thanks again Prof!
Yes, that is one of Men at Work's finest songs.
It’s A Mistake is a wonderful song, probably my second favorite by them. Electric Blue is one of my favorite songs ever, period.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 For whatever reason, Electric Blue wasn’t played on my local radio station back in 1987. So I only heard it at the grocery store. I also thought the singer was saying “Electrical” which made it really hard to figure out who the group was. 😝
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 You have impeccable taste!!

Love the song Overkill ! That was my song in the spring of 2005 - it kept playing in my head during that spring season I distinctly remember
Allergies!!! The worst! 🤧
My top 5 under the radar hits...
XTC - Senses Working Overtime
The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)
The Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination
Tears For Fears - Change
INXS - Original Sin
All great songs.
These songs are so great to listen to while on a hammock while holding a glass of iced tea
OMG..you featured Rick Springfield!!!! I love Affair of the Heart and agree it needs to be played more. Living In Oz is my favorite Springfield album❤️❤️
Back to edit…and ICEHOUSE!!! One of my favorite underrated 80s bands! I’m loving this episode!!!!
Double , The Captive of Her Heart very immersive from the beat to the lyrics grabs your attention it really pulls you in.
5 not as well known hit-ish 80s songs in no particular order:
Wouldn't it be Good? -- Nik Kershaw
One of our Submarines -- Thomas Dolby
Mexican Radio -- Wall of VooDoo
Mirror in the Bathroom -- English Beat
Punk Rock Girl - Dead Milkmen
And yes, Overkill is the best Men at Work😍
good day!
this is by far your best episode for 2022.
thank you for making this.
Ah, "Captain of Her Heart" by Double is absolutely sublime. I actually have that CD, which is apparently quite rare.
Super cool! I wish I owned that CD copy.
I just scored the vinyl album still sealed for a great price. Absolutely love it!!
Kurt Maloo was the main singer in it and has some similar type songs including a remake ofCaptain of her Heart. They stream.
Finally! Rick is one of my fave artists! You could do a few hours with that guy. Bit of trivia...Rick recorded a version of the Church song on here for a record years back of covers he did. It was a song he wishes he wrote. I had that Ice House record. Electric Blue is pop heaven!
I really loved the Men At Work Cargo album. It had a lot of good songs besides Overkill on it.
OVerkill is the best!
I agree. I personally like Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive.
Yes, love "Cargo" too. Such as I also have loved: "I Like To," "Upstairs In My House" ..."It's A Mistake" has an excellent music video...
One of, if not, his best songs. Affair of the heart.
I was going to bet that the urinal story was going to be about "Don't Talk to Strangers" as that title would make a lot of sense to fit the story... You're e right, PoR, "Overkill" was Men at Work's best song for sure!
Stroke me. Billy squire.🤣
Urinals inspiring songs, geez the 80s were a weird time.
The urinal story was hilarious!
That acoustic version of Overkill is one of my favorite songs of the time period.
Interesting, I never knew the origins behind this song. Shame that Rick is mostly known for this one tune, but I also rate "Human Touch" and "Don't Talk to Strangers" highly.
....Lady Trina CALLS it! ....LUV those tunes!
My favorite is ‘Love Somebody’….. it’s just amazing ❤❤
Both great songs. Also, Bop Til You Drop and Love Somebody from Hard to Hold.
Human Touch was a great song.
One in a Million is a great song by The Romantics. You’re right, most people only know them for What I Like About You.
Talking in Your Sleep.
'edge of remembeing'
@@montysloungetv and this bothers you how?
I often find myself humming/singing " Electric Blue". I think it is the staccato delivery. And "The Captain of Her Heart" is one of those songs that really takes me back to the mellow aspect of the 80s.
I will say it again. Duran Duran is underapreceactiaed for thier skills at writing a song. Yes they were a pop sensation, but damn they could write a tune. Some of my favorite songs from that era.
From Kajagoogoo to Arcadia.
Finally got to see Colin Hay live this year, Overkill live was a highlight for me. Every song was great, but I'm with you on Overkill.
Two songs by Canadian groups I listened to in the 80's have come back to revisit me. Don't know if they were big hits but I liked these better than some other stuff on the radio. Idle Eyes - Sandra, and Saga - On the Loose. Check them out Professor I'm sure you will like..
Great songs!
Pretty impressed that you picked 4 Australian bands ....Good on you, ...for highlighting some great artists cheers mate Dave in Australia 🇦🇺
Under played songs of the 80s:
Rolling Stones - She’s So Cold; The Police - Murder By Numbers; Stevie Wonder - Do I Do;
Tina Turner - Look Me In The Heart; Huey Lewis/The News - Now Here’s You.
Do I do!!!!
....ahhhh-OOOO!! ....LOVE "Look Me In The Heart"! ....I even bought the UK Single (as an Import), because I wanted it for me Tina 45 collection! ...GOOD choice!
Do I Do is so nostalgic for me since it always reminds me of my mom.
What great taste you have!!! Captain of the heart and Electric Blue puts me in my feels!!!
Adam should do a deep dive on Cargo.
Please also look up : Mondo Rock (Band) - "Come Said the Boy" or "State of the Heart"
: Cold Chisel (Band) - Bow River or Forever Now or anything on the "East" or "Circus Animals" Albums - Hound Dog is one of my obscure favourites.
Huuuuge bands here in Australia which need a lot more international love!!
Love it! Cargo was the very first cassette I ever purchased with my own money (allowance). Loved the whole album and completely agree with you about Overkill being their best song.
So agree with "Affair of the Heart" and "Overkill"!!! I would add "Something About You" by Level 42! Love your channel and love all the back stories!
I had almost forgotten about Captain of Her Heart. I have had that piano part play in my head but couldn’t remember from where. Thank you
