- Join Ron, WA6YOU and George, WB5OYP as they describe the basic dipole antenna, it’s various parameters and electrical equivalents, including inductive reactance, capacitive reactance, radiation resistance, and resonance. In addition, they will go over the basics of Voltage Standing Wave Radio (VSWR), along with the many truths and misconceptions of its measurement. Two popular antenna analyzers will be demonstrated along with a plethora of antenna types.

Great video! I used to have the Kenwood 599 twins. My first hf rig in 1995. I miss those radios, but traded them for a Johnson Invader 2000 and Heathkit SB300 receiver. The trade worked out well, but would love to also own the twins. W1RMD
Also, the guy who has the radio that quits at 40 meters probably has something frequency sensitive in or around the radio. When you load up your antenna, especially if the tuner is INSIDE the radio, it can load up surrounding objects. I've gotten rf burns from tuning antennas that were 1:1 VSWR according to the meter, largely due to the fact that my cw key was hot. I also burned out a gfi circuit inside a hair drier that was 100 feet away from my TH6 beam on 20 meters! RF can be dangerous. Tuners should come with a warning for new or inexperienced operators. You guys seem to have a great club! 73's to all!
@@W1RMD An antenna tuner only makes the antenna look like a perfect 50 ohm resistive load to the radio. Wild things can happen between the antenna and the tuner, especially if you have rf current in the coax shield.
BTW. the club holds online meetings twice a month, and visitors are always welcome.
there is so many things I could ask? one I have a 590 that has an automatic antenna tuner. I just a one thousand.. I get a seven on swr when I key the one thousand. I don't transmit one it. I have a manual antenna tunner that I could put on it. I was hoping to get an l d g antenna tuner for it. I came out of the C b world. I under stand that a radio should not be above three on the swr. I carry a general license but there is so much I don't know. I have a gap in the back yard. I have a no tune antenna on a tower, but the jerks that put it up for me broke the antenna and and the wind bent it. ? so there is so many things I could ask. I just got a b f t nine vertical to put up, and when I get it I find out that each part of its lobes.has to be set.
What happened to tuning for reasonance X factor? the analizer shows it easy.

ok, question in the days of old we run fifty feet coax or a hundred feet. I saw now length of coax. any input on this>
i had a g 5 rv up also, but it came down in the winter so I tied it off to the cane link fence. in the mean time I had old lady move in next door so it has been the hat fields and the McCoy . she thinks the tree i had one end tied to is hers to make a long story short lightening struck the antenna I was lucky I had none of my ham radios hooked up at the time. it fried a drake receiver and a free play radio. it left my shack and missed the brand new smart tv and fried my ;mates computer. end of the line for the strike. I was surprised it did not fry other radios. a couple of radio shack scanners and r 5000 thousand receiver and a one forty eight gtl side band c b. when I. m bored I listen to the truckers on it.
lord i'm in trouble I have a .t.v .antenna tower, a fm station and a am station these are seven miles from me.the tower is our local tv broad cast station. so will all three of these have an effect vswr. ?
They will not affect your vswr. They will affect the measurement, which measures the energy coming back from the antenna, and assumes the instrument is the only source.
