    Re: Gentrification of poverty - They're never poor in a way that leaves marks or matters to their character beyond tragic backstory. They grew up poor but they're in perfect health**. They grew up poor but it doesn't affect their relationship with money (or food, shelter, clothing, etc.). They grew up poor but the only debt they have is the made up one the villain comes at them with. They grew up poor but supporting their other poor family members financially never comes up OR the other poor family members who want money are cast as villains. They grew up poor but they're definitely not poor now, they got a job and apparently that solves all your problems. Lingering effects of poverty, what?
    **Except for the trauma but that has the same problems as the poverty back story. They have trauma but it's never discussed in terms of actual mental illness. They have trauma but it never manifests as anything other than vague sadness, jealousy, and/or controlling behavior. (Well, there was that one movie where the guy threatened suicide in order to force the girl to come back to him but that falls under controlling behavior.) They never have something like anxiety or phobias because those aren't 'sexy'. And they can't have anything like schizophrenia because only those mental illnesses are strictly for villains in fiction.

    In addition to the fetishized trauma I noticed something else that’s super common. These relationship stories almost exclusively follow the arc of “curing the broken man” and the movie ends ONLY when he’s fixed. It never matters what the woman wanted outside of the relationship. Her arc/ growth is finished the first time they kiss or have sex. Cool done. No need to explore her any further. The final 60% of the movie she’s just a prop to move the plot along.

    About the trauma fetishing point: yes. Yes it is. And it's not just "straight, white men" either. Yaoi has it a lot. Anime has it a lot and in anime most characters are Japanese. There's a long-ass history of fetishizing MALE trauma. And I do specify male trauma, because female trauma is treated veeeery differently in writings and stories. It's the idea of "oh, i'm a good woman/man and I can fix him!" thing.

      Don't even remind me of those 90s/2000s BL that made me wanna gouge my eyes out. So much rape and romantization of that trauma. I avoid that problematic stuff like the plague. Luckily nowdays it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. It even improved a lot when it comes to the variety of stories and characters. And even if there is rape,it's handled with care and dignity,treated as such,a trauma. When I do run into a fetishized one,it's game over.

    on the "trauma trope": girl it IS very icky. Directors, writers etc. (not all of course) use trauma as a tool for an easy way to make the lead male "flawed"/not so perfect as he seems, which is VERY wrong. Trauma is tossed around like a pizza and is treated/talked about as it is like dropping an ice cream on the street when you were 5 years old. I feel like it completely belittles the problem when real people HAVE IT. It completely dehumanizes both the character in question and those in real life who DO HAVE the problem that's "talked about"

    • @eunbis_rubi
      @eunbis_rubi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      Agreed. I also feel like the trauma these characters experience is simplified and treated like a “phase” in their life that they just get over. There’s also never scenes or talk in these movies about these characters getting therapy or seeing like a psychologist for their trauma. Just the 😺 power that heals all.

      I think it can be written right. The problem is, so many shitty writers think they can do it right when they can't. As somebody with some serious childhood issues, I don't think they understand you can't "fix," trauma. It's something that's always there and that's always going to be there. You can have a romantic partner that stays by your side, supports you and helps you power through. But there is no romance in the trauma itself.
      Edit: and like Doxxma said as well, it's taken so lightheartedly that people irl are starting to use it as a "quirky" thing or play it down like it isn't that bad. Authors need to cut that shit out. Like I said you can't just get over it. The only thing you can learn to do is live and cope with it.

    • @voidbreather7405
      @voidbreather7405 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      The sad thing is, is that trauma can be and HAS been written well: all that it takes is not fetishizing/romanticizing it (or if characters are doing so in-universe, then make sure that the narrative shows that this line of thinking is wrong/detrimental), and showing actual consequences to the trauma. Show triggers, night terrors, lingering shifts in personality and behaviour/habits, mood swings, strained and broken relationships, unhealthy coping mechanisms (and again, DON'T romanticize them!), and of course, show the afflicted trying to heal from their traumas if possible (ex: therapy, healthy self-regulation, etc.).
      Above all else, do your research if you plan to explore and portray experiences that aren't your own (and even if they are, still do some research - trauma isn't a one-size fits all kind of thing!). And see if you can receive input from those that have gone through similar experiences.

    The whole thing of “fetishizing people because of their mental illnesses or their trauma” is a real issue. Like for example, how some boys will say “I’ll only date girls who have daddy issues.” Or some girls will be like “I’ll date some bRoKeN boy to try to fix them” trope. And “normal” people think that having childhood trauma is so cool and trendy when its really not. Don’t know where I’m going with this but since Kennie brought it up I just wanted to talk about this ksjlsksllsljsk

      Right!? Most of my friends have CPTSD (for those that don't know it's a type of PTSD you get from a prolonged traumatic environment versus one traumatic event, eg child abuse) and they're balls of sunshine. Not to say we don't struggle with a lot of dark, difficult feelings but in terms of our behaviour, a lot of us are just trying to be as kind as possible to people because we don't want anyone to suffer like we suffered. My friends are the kind of people who go above and beyond to try to accommodate people's dietary requirements (eg I live in the UK so it's common to offer black tea when you go to someone's home but I can't have caffeine and they'll like apologise profusely for not having herbal tea but it's like, hey you didn't know it's fine! But the next time I go they'll have a box of peppermint or something), to be good hosts and make sure people have exactly what they need to be comfortable, they give content warnings before mentioning aspects of their own trauma so others aren't triggered by it, they collect buttons and patches for their jackets and get really intense interests in things like mushrooms. They're sweet, loving people. Not brooding brutes.

      Can we just have a male romantic lead who has had trauma, but actually seeing a therapist and it's actually helping him recover? Or one who has worked out his issues beforehand? I never count on my friends to fix my psychological issues; they help a lot but the issue doesn't go away, and I'm just bipolar, not like the horrific trauma these characters have.
      Why is this such a thing in romances? And why does it have to be so dramatic? And the same ones? Can't we just have, say, an autistic character if you want to talk about people overcoming their limitations for the sake of love?

I get that he has trauma from his abusive past, but if he's a "saint" and has the ability to run a successful bar, he should be able to control his feelings enough not to hurt people. If anything, I would think the "saintly" behavior (since it is not shown to be a facade) would make him less of a threat because he chooses to act better than the people in his past and to not hurt innocents. It just doesn't make any sense. It seems that line was just put in for the sex appeal and doesn't really fit the character, which makes me angry. The thing is, when romance movies want to use trauma, they always end up using a kiddie version of it because doing it for real would take too much screen time from the sex. So you end up with this “teehee he has a wittle bit of twauma ain’t that a fun project” type of trauma, and it’s on tv so often that people think it’s the real thing.
    So yeah, it’s definitely gentrification of trauma. They stick the name on it, but dumb it way down so it’s not actually scary or undesirable in any way. All bark, no bite.

    I really liked your point about the trope of fetishizing trauma. I think it plays into the fantasy that women can "fix" troubled men and it gives a convenient excuse for men to use when they behave badly or are abusive. It's like a weird balancing act - the trauma can't be _too_ scarring otherwise it won't be as "easy" to get over with the "right" woman, but just enough that the partner feels compelled to help or stick around. The more I think about it, the more messed up it is.

    • @XavierVB
      @XavierVB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      One thing that I’m glad about is that it didn’t take every trope from 50 Shades. Like you said, it fetishises abuse, so imagine if it also took the “I was sexually abused” trope from 50 Shades. Not only does it seem to minimise the trauma that men who go through sexual abuse have, but it’s essentially saying “Yeah, you were traumatised by that coochie, but this one’ll fix it.” It really is such a sick trope. I hope any of this made sense.

      Everytime I see another "innocent" romance/drama/comedy involving a woman solving all of a man's issues with her love (Beauty & the Beast, Kissing Booth), I die a little. Why? Because that's the example my friends follow right into their toxic relationships. They dump the good guy for the drama and fighting, because "only that's true love". Too many women act as their boyfriend's therapist, mother and caretaker all at once. It's saddening.

    • @patch8932
      @patch8932 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's a trope that can be written well if you do it right. Only thing is, shitty authors don't do it right. I also know that some people write it as a mechanism to cope with their own trauma; I think it's the desire to want to have somebody able to make it magically disappear, and I don't think authors really recognize that hurts more than it helps. If they don't use trauma as the character's whole personality, doesn't use it to excuse shitty behavior, doesn't have anybody "fix," them (helping them cope in times of need is different than fixing), and portray it as something you can just "get over," as somebody with major childhood issues, that is how you can do it right.

    • @kobaltkween
      @kobaltkween 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@patch8932 Yeah, I've only recently discovered what good romance writing is through an author who gives her characters emotional issues to overcome in order to have a relationship. That's their arc and conflict. Just like fantasy characters need to master magic, and sci fi characters need to discover a technological solution, good romance characters should need to solve a significant internal problem. But the genre defines the impetus and problem, not the solution. Which is almost always personal growth. The romantic interest is essentially the MacGuffin of that genre. Making them the goal _and_ the means for achieving the goal is bad writing.

    Adding to the “trauma trope”, this has and still is affecting the way people react in relationships. The whole notion of “he’s broken but I can fix him. He’s a fucked up individual who is bad to everyone else but good to me” keeps people in toxic relationships because the media has romanticized it for more than a decade now. Issues that should be solved through therapy and professional help, people be using it as a “connection” and reasons to have “passionate sex”. It’s sad but that’s the way it is.

    It's not just the tropes/trope that bothers me its the fact that REAL PEOPLE who have traumatic experiences are belittled and in fiction they're perfectly healed when they meet someone new who's just a bland person with a normal functioning brain. I won't repeat things others have already said in the comments but the thing is I think it's perfectly fine to have a relationship that centers around helping your lover because there are real relationships like this HOWEVER, to make this realistic the person with pain in question needs to be BETTER not 'CURED'
    Example: person w/ depression, (all symptoms, hates themselves, puts blame on themselves constantly, feels alone even when they're happy in the moment), depressed person meets s/o.. s/o grows close and finds out abt the depressed person's condition. S/o supports depressed person. S/o does tiny helpful things to give them hope. Depressed person is still depressed but finally feels comfortable telling others. Depressed person gets more support and eventually seeks help. Depressed person still has down days but copes.
    Is that better or is that better?

    That trope you described is basically the fallout of Wuthering Heights being reclassified from Gothic horror to romance when Emily Bronte was revealed to be a woman. How many years later and Heathcliffs are still soaking panties because he's now a romantic lead instead of being viewed as a horrifying and haunted antagonist. Oops!

    • @MR-ek6yk

      I never knew that context! Wuthering Heights was one of the first books I read that I absolutely loathed. Cathy was such a weirdo - everyone was a weirdo, basically - but Heathcliff was downright terrifying. He was so unstable and needy and belligerent and just...blech. Almost every page I was staring in disbelief that any of these characters were meant to be at all interesting or charismatic, and later when I learned the book was a ~~literary classic and a ROMANCE (???!) I decided I should just stick with Jane Austen and Zutara fanfic.

    I think there's an assumption in a lot of these movies/books that you can't be impoverished, especially deeply impoverished, without also having terrible things done to you as a child. And, to be fair, it's probably more common simply because a lack of money can mean parents have to make difficult decisions that may leave kids more vulnerable than well-off counterparts (think about a parent working multiple jobs, unable to afford traditional childcare, and relying on an acquaintance that may or may not be a suitable caretaker). But it definitely feels rare to see characters with impoverished backgrounds that had non-traumatic childhoods. (Stressful isn't the same thing as traumatic either.)

      @@RectPropagation I absolutely hate it when characters in stories have very specific nicknames/pet names that aren't well explained. Especially when it's between characters that don't know each other. Depending when and where the story is set and who is speaking, I can see someone calling a stranger a more generic pet name like sweetie/sugar/honey/dear/love, but not anything like cupcake. Calling a stranger that sounds so freaking creepy. Not to mention that it seems like a hallmark for bad writing since it shows that author is so lazy they can't take two seconds to explain where the nickname came from or write it into the story.
      Edit: Looking back, they do explain the nickname, but it doesn't make sense so I guess tge point stands. "Cupcake" does not correlate with being a lightweight. At least have it be because of something logical. Maybe he calls her that because she's small and sweet? IDK, but anything else but what we got would probably be better.

    A few thoughts on the "trauma is sexy" trope. There is some strange ideology that trauma makes you better in bed due to having repressed issues that don't have any other "outlet". It's not just a trope seen in these types of movies, we see it in other popular media with the idealization of girls with daddy issues and other such ideas. Like you said, I'm not sure quite what conclusion to draw from these observations but thanks for giving me a place to share :)

Most of the time their trauma will always involve a older women, either as the one who grooms/abuses him or the rich mother who abandoned them, had issues with drugs, or commited su*cide.

    I have many things to say about this one
    1. Kennie's eyeshadow is so mesmerizing I couldn't take my eyes off it
    2. there is nothing romantic or sexy about someone throwing up on themself. Why would ANYONES next move after witnessing that be to get super close and sensual with them ???
    3. I'm learning more about codependency via therapy and this guys need to "fix" everything just threw up red flags for me. so does the trope of the main character "fixing" their traumatized love interest.
    4. there definitely is something to be said about how trauma is romanticized in fiction, especially in romance and erotica. there's plenty of other comments talking about how unhealthy this is so I'll focus on more specific stuff. If this sort of situation happened in real life, the traumatized person's partner would just get frustrated when they aren't able to "fix" them and cure their trauma or mental illness. also if this is this guys first time ever talking about his past and traumas with someone, he should definitely be showing some emotion, crying, choking on his words, all that. Its kind of unsettling how in these movies when the man talks about his traumatic childhood they remain as stone faced and attractive as ever as if they're talking about what to have for dinner or something.
    5. I'm so excited for next week holy shit that movie looks so bad I can't wait
