It's an absolutely beautifully artistic movie. People who truly value films that make you think, films that aren't just car chases and gun battles, but films that bring you to another place and make you wonder, this is a film for them.
I think I finally understand the movie. "the two way's of life: grace and nature" Jessica Chastain personifies Grace (happiness, Beauty, caring), Brad Pitt personifies nature (tough, Brutal, angry). these two thing's are supposedly different from eachother. Sean Penn's character is the son of these two forces, and is conflicted and struggling with who is (nature or grace). these two forces are not bad, though, just different. I can't believe I just noticed that.
for the people who got bored and think it's pretentious, I've to remind you that there two kinds of films-the ones to entertain you and the interpretive ones with more artistic plight. the first one gives you what you want--full of action, emotive dialogue, full of twist and turns when it comes to the plot etc. the 2nd one challenges you, dares you to solve its puzzle, the puzzle being a new way for the artist to convey a message, such puzzles are like that of Ulysses, Gravity's rainbow, the wasteland, howl, 8 and a half etc. now, i watched the whole film and i understood it and, i wasn't just entertained, i was taken beyond there! It's one of the most spiritual experiences i had, like an entire life review where all scenes of your life flashes before your eyes.
Oh what a crock of shit. I enjoy slow movies (Lars Von Trier's melancholia comes to mind) and I'm all for creative and non linear storytelling, but this movie was just bad and uses the "artistic" cover as a defense against the non pretentious moviegoers.
Rami Mikati Explain why you thought it was bad. And don't just bark out that it was "pretentious" - it seems like everyone loves to throw that around whenever they can't explain WHY it was bad with solid reasons.
i disagree. there are movies that are just simple entertainment, easy to watch and without a deeper meaning, and that there are movies on the opposite that are enigmatic and even hard to watch at times, but most movies are some where in between! look at chaplin or hitchcock, their movies are very entertaining and yet they ask difficult questions about the human condition ( or redefine what cinema as a visiul artform is capable of achieving )at the same time. in fact, i would even say that "tree of life" is even a good example of a movie inbetween the two extrema, because even if you "don't get it", it's by all means not discomfortable to watch. visually speaking, it's conventionally beautiful. sorry for my english.
Seeing all the comments, definitely not a movie for the iPad generation. But for the rest... a beautiful piece of cinema, that'll last the test of time. Still gets me every time.
it took me 3 days to finish this film. the cinematographer was great, the actors are fantastic, the dialogue was nonexistence, the story was incoherent & i will easily recommend this film to anyone suffering from insomnia...
seeing this trailer from a director who based this work to where he grew up and where I grew up is beautiful. reminds me of my family and how the older members spent their life here and loved every second with their family and didn't want anything else. Makes me anxious and nostalgic for my end.
I understand people who say that this is not their kind of movie. But I don't understand people who say it's bullshit. I think everyone can find something in this movie that he can relate to in some way.
if you are not able to enjoy this movie, i feel sorry for you this is not your average transformers, transporter, 2 fast 2 whatever shit... this is art
Ce film ne laisse pas indifférent, il fait appel à notre empathie, entre autre, il laisse le spectateur réfléchir sans le choquer, il possède une force extraordinaire par les personnages et leur trajectoire !
It is worth the try but you have to be willing to watch it two times, one to enjoy the beauty of the movie and the other to understand what is going on with the main character. It is not like inception with hidden stuff, just try to step in his shoes.
This movie is quite simple and represents everything already burned into our brains, everything we are expected to do. People who love this movie just agree with the film and how the average human life is and has been for years. People who hate the movie say it brings nothing of importance to the table. Technically everyone is right about this film. It's really unnecessary, but it doesn't mean everyone is going to hate it, or love it.
The message it delivers does not solely judge whether the movie is good or not. It may have a simple meaning but the way it was executed is most definitely not simple. What a movie or any piece of art conveys isn't nearly as important as how it conveys it.
The whispered voiceovers aren't "asking existential questions," they're prayers spoken to God. The entire film is ostensibly a prayer, with the final scene being a vision of heaven in Sean Penn's character's eyes. Watch the film with that in mind and it'll make sense.
Mothers are fragile and fathers want to build badass kids. That's how it is (or was back in the day). As a child, he and his brothers experience the shock wave of these two forces, but we don't see the consequences of this emotional contrast in his brothers because this ain't their story. Because little Penn spends more time with his mother or his brothers and friends, the strongly traditional nature of this father scare him instead of making him tough.
the movie is even better :) try not to watch it in any copy other than BluRay . I waited 18 months to watch it until i had a chance to buy BluRay Player then watch it :D
Keep in mind that nature doesn't necessarily signify brutality and anger, but strength. In nature, the strong always survive. The animal that can run the fastest, complete for mating opportunities, and most effectively kill their pray are the ones that survive long enough to reproduce. Grace, in this instance, represents the transcendent side of life: art, religion, love, and anything that doesn't rely on the stark reality of nature. Nature = philosophical materialism, grace = spirituality
I would largely agree with that, but it's interesting to me that the father ultimately fails in what he originally was doing and he comes back to God (shown in some shots in the film in the church and His softening as he grows older). The mother has no such change in character, but instead stays the same. When I've watched it I saw the way of grace really prevail, and doing so gently and naturally.
@AjayLikesGaming As a matter of fact, I am not unintelligent. I have been in the accelerated program, GATE, since I was 8, and have taken numerous honours courses without ever having seen my GPA slip below 3.8. In years past I have been the chess champion of my county, and last year my essay on gratitude won a state contest. Currently I am enrolled in high school and college.
@Oscar Alcalde Damn straight. My favourite movie is the Avengers because superheroes and explosions are cool, and I have toy soldiers lined up on my door frame because I like to think they are my protectors. I am a child and I enjoy it. But I'm not unintelligent.
@AjayLikesGaming This, however, doesn't alter the fact that I prefer action movies over a slow film such as this one. It's uneventful and meticulous, requiring far more interpretation than I'd like when trying to relax with family. It is a bad movie in my opinion, but in case you overlooked it, I stated that I respect others' liking for the movie, however much I don't understand the particular liking.
I definitely want to see the film that someone calls the worst film ever...I hated it! That is the film I immediately want to go see. Wow! They vehemently hated it...and that strikes my curiosity why, why did they hate it so much. And I don't want to see the film that most people say "oh, it was alright, it was pretty good, I enjoyed it." Have no desire to see a film that was catatonically stated as being "alright". I want to see passion-filled response films...like..."I absolutely without a doubt loved that film...LOVED that flick" or "That movie sucked, in fact it sucked donkey dicks...I even left the theatre before it ended, it sucked so much." Those kind of responses spark a light inside of me leading me into thinking...I really got to see that film, it is garnering up some trepidatious feelings about it. That's just me, but it usually paves a right response when selecting a film to watch.
This movie had so much promise but Malik went astray with it. Too many superfluous scenes, however well shot, just bogged it down. But it still held a lot of substance.
is there a version without the bad cg dinosaur bit. I don't know why but in this and TRL malick breaks character with that and the john travolta in the movie bit.
Sort of. He went to University there, but not really from there. A lot of movies have had a Texas theme over the decades. It's Texas...no place like it, good and bad. A unique place.
The discrepancy I have with the culture at that time is with the people portrayed in the movie, because the people of that time are contributing to the; hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, status quo. I predict the director of the film is only concern with the psyche analysis; in other words, the relationship of the father with his son, and the impact that relationship is to the development of psychosocial cognition.
I think you are very right, but also maybe an attempt to open up people minds, to how beautiful the world is, and how fucked up it is that our lives revolve around materials and greed. We have just about fucked up this earth we live on, maybe the writer and/or director saw an opportunity to save the human race from the inevitable...but then again...who knows, i could just be a manic depressive, looking at the bad in the world. All i know is that this shit is cruel, too cruel
I'll watch it again, but it was nothing new or a revelation for mankind to throw away their material goods and follow the Messiah into a promised state of love...No didn't do it for me. I watched the 2001 Space Odessy as a 7 yr old and hated it didn't get it and feel the same way in my 50's...today and have watched the film many times.since...This movie left me feeling the same way..
First time I see it as a father.
I cry even more.
This is beyond cinema. This is pure art.
Hits much differently after becoming a father/mother.
I hear you brother.
Some say it is the greatest film ever made...others hated it with a passion.
And what do you say
Absolutely the worst movie I ever watched, or tried to watch
@The Creature I guess you just aren't smart enough to appreciate it.
Add me to one who states its one of the greatest films I've ever seen
@Parzival Actually, I finally watched it and it is pure crap. Beautiful looking crap is still crap.
It's an absolutely beautifully artistic movie. People who truly value films that make you think, films that aren't just car chases and gun battles, but films that bring you to another place and make you wonder, this is a film for them.

This is a beautiful insight. Thanks for that!

Rami Mikati The Tree of Life is great, you just didn’t understand it.
Reading comments for the real trailer ........ never fails
One of the best trailers to one of the most beautiful movies ever created.
You must be a virgin.
"Ma Vlast (The Moldau River)" is THE most quintessential piece of music that could have accompanied this masterpiece.
Seeing all the comments, definitely not a movie for the iPad generation. But for the rest... a beautiful piece of cinema, that'll last the test of time. Still gets me every time.

Among one of the most breath taking achievemets of recent cinematic history
abi yaşıyon mu
I understand people who say that this is not their kind of movie. But I don't understand people who say it's bullshit. I think everyone can find something in this movie that he can relate to in some way.
Fassy Cumberbee it takes patience to watch this movie...drawn out at start but as it goes on its meaning is so deep
No matter how often I watch this. TEARS. Five seconds in, and for the whole movie.
There is no other film like this film Terrence Malick is a genius
Film is magic.
if you are not able to enjoy this movie, i feel sorry for you
this is not your average transformers, transporter, 2 fast 2 whatever shit... this is art
Nah, this movie is trying to be to deep
We're any children hurt during the making of this movie
I believe this is one of the greatest movies of all time. ❤️🔥
How cinematic do you want the videography to be?
Director: Yes!!!
This film message is like ocean of wisdom and at the end we realise that how small we are in front the mother nature
It's foundation is the story of Job.
You should read Book of Job.
I haven't watched this movie yet, but the trailer alone makes me cry already.
Did you ever watch?
Jessica Chastain, is a phenomenal actress, she didn't make a single bad performance in any of her films.
Every time, I cry.
Every. Time.
Chills every time.
About to watch this movie! I'm a film student and just took it out the college library its 11pm here in the UK too, late film wooo
+Harley Rose how'd you like it
Yeah how was it? It’s been 6 years but if the film made a lasting impact, you’ll remember watching it
Ce film ne laisse pas indifférent, il fait appel à notre empathie, entre autre, il laisse le spectateur réfléchir sans le choquer, il possède une force extraordinaire par les personnages et leur trajectoire !
This isn’t the original video hit I watched the heck out of this clip when it came out. Even downloaded it to my iPod touch. Amazing trailer.
Made me cry the last time I saw this.
"I never knew what the fuck was going on, and I was bored to death." -You see, that's how most of us leave their lives.
this film doesn't require a brain... it requires a heart.... a close bond with the divine...
Now THAT is how you make a movie trailer.
the year that Jessica Chastain burst onto the scene with five movies released that year. Love her!
I don't think she's made a movie in the past five years, though.
Love is the only way to combine the way of grace and the way of nature.
this is such a beautiful movie...
Masterpiece...
i had tears in the beginning and end, i dont know anything about LSD but this movie really touched my soul
It is worth the try but you have to be willing to watch it two times, one to enjoy the beauty of the movie and the other to understand what is going on with the main character. It is not like inception with hidden stuff, just try to step in his shoes.

I love love this film
this line actually made me cry because then i realised that i actually was in love :')
This trailer is like playing Beethoven's Symphony Number 9 to opening a can of beans.
Most incredible, awe-inspiring trailer I've ever seen...
This looks marvelous! Last I checked, Terrence Malik made some pretty good films (ex: The New World)
A trailer that made me sob like a child, a film that left me in a constant state of bliss.
I saw the ending of the tree of life what I saw on TV it is a beautiful movie have see all of it
that was a beautiful interpretation..
Holy shit this is maybe the most moving trailer I've ever seen in my life.
If you like this trailer you might try the trailer for X Files Fight the Future.
This trailer is actually better than the full length movie.
Amazing cut trailer.
you're exactly right, my friend. Welcome.
Unless you love, your life will flash by
Welcome.. "To the end of time."
@toby099 because Terrence Malick is from Texas.
aside from The Thin Red Line and The New World, all of his films take place in Texas.
Texas? I thought he was from Iowa.
thank you for clarifying my comment
WHY THIS COULD BE SO HARD FOR ME!!!
AND I FEELS LIKE I'M THE PLAYING THIS MOVIES...;D

The loss of a brother and final acceptance of his passing after years of mourning.
Grt stuff.....

Unless you love, life will flash by...
this will be ordered...now!
Four years back i hated it now i that have understood i am enlightened

is it just me or does Brad Pitt never actually say "Someday we'll fall down there and weep...and we'll understand it all...all things" in the movie??
I would largely agree with that, but it's interesting to me that the father ultimately fails in what he originally was doing and he comes back to God (shown in some shots in the film in the church and His softening as he grows older). I hope all the thumbs up mean that everyone else can't believe you only just noticed that.
And the oscar winner for best Cinematography 🤘
Interesting find.
the photo essat smashed it

Not necessarily, I don't believe in the "divine" yet I still think this movie was brilliant.
Yeah I get what you mean. I might give it a try, I felt the same way about Man of Steel
Don't be mad again but I really hated Man of Steel.
Update: "Academy Award winner BRAD PITT."
Good!
Great film. I dont understand but great nonetheless
@Oscar Alcalde Damn straight. My favourite movie is the Avengers because superheroes and explosions are cool, and I have toy soldiers lined up on my door frame because I like to think they are my protectors. I am a child and I enjoy it. But I'm not unintelligent.
no, it seems like people who dont love, go really slow, and people who go fast dont know love..
People who find this movie "boring" or "pretentious" have no sense of spectacle whatsoever and I truly feel sorry for them.

Movie is way better than the trailer :)
This movie had so much promise but Malik went astray with it. Too many superfluous scenes, however well shot, just bogged it down. But it still held a lot of substance.
What is the name of the music playing?
Moldau by Smetana
From Ma Vlast
Ok, so....what is the movie about?
I thought the trailer was new. I misread it for 10 hours ago posted lol. I was wondering how brad Pitt and Sean penn got so young all sudden
"Everything Will Be Ok"? Anyone?
is there a version without the bad cg dinosaur bit. I don't know why but in this and TRL malick breaks character with that and the john travolta in the movie bit.
Just to say. I loved you comment.
Atlast someone found your comment
Oh I see...thnx. I just thought I would ask because after seeing the trailer I was a little confused and I heard it was a pretty bad movie

The culture is my one only discrepancy at this time. The psyche analysis of the movie is an aspect of life that transcends culture discrepancy.
what the hell dude, you just confused the fuck outta me!!!
Freshtex Blackman
Maybe that those people don't think like the majority of people did back in the culture of that time? He could've worded it better.

aries and leos WANT theyre lives to flash by...but tuarus and capricorn goats and pisces want life to be slow and receptive...

Superb but slow slow slow slow
I don't think inevitable is the word you're looking for...
That does not make much sense in your context.
rehab?
