    Great video showing the terrains and capabilities of what this bike was built for. Thanks!

    Dean, thank you for taking me along on your excellent ride! Love it! I have an 8.2, and I think it is a wonderful blend of road and mountain characteristics. Your video is especially meaningful to me as I lived in Salt Lake back in the mid 90's... and believe it or not, I lived in the same apartment complex as you!

    After watching your video and review, I got myself a Trek DS 8.3 also. I really enjoyed the bike, it is really a bike to go for both road and light trail! The name dual sport fits it all! Thumps up!

    Riding down Main Street is so much fun. I am so lucky, because where I live, is right on the River Way. Two seconds, boom, and I'm on it. I love riding the river way, no traffic! Matter of fact, you rode right by where I live.

    Looked like you had a lot of fun. Thanks for the video. Its been 2 years since you posted a Trek DS bike trip. How has the DS held up over time? Still enjoying it any? Hope all is well.

    Well a hybrid is basically the perfect "commuter" bike. They are significantly faster than a mountain bike and far more comfortable than a road bike. You can still hit the dirt with ease, something you cannot do on a road bike, and yet, whip through town much faster than a mountain bike. I also bought some nice 29er mountain bike tires that fit on this DS that I throw on when I hit the mountain bike trails. Just don't buy anything wider than 2.1, I bought 29X2.0 they fit just fine.

    Ugh I think I'm gonna have to get me one. Dammit.

  • @0utriderzero
    @0utriderzero 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's great that you mentioned the maximum tire size. I've been eying a set of 29er tires but was worried about the sizing. 29 X 2 is your recommendation for the 2012 Trek DS series? Did you use the same wheels just swapping the tires? My next upgrade to the 8.2 I ride will be adding disc brakes with a new wheelset. BB7s or might splurge on a Tektro Dorado HD-E710 set since I'm thinking of adding a mid-drive electric motor and changing the final gear for the cassette to 11 teeth (11-34) and a new shifter.
    I've loved the 8.2 I've been riding for the past two years and would rather upgrade the components than get a new bike.. Thousands of miles later, its still a great bike for city rides and light trails. The only reason I would get a new bike or frame would be to experiment with a full suspension.
    Thanks for your video, it was enjoyable!

    Nice to see the bike running on trails I like to ride. Im looking to get the 8.3 DS did you have the forks locked out? Im planing on test riding one next weekend if its nice.

  • @dlhanse
    @dlhanse  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, the forks were not locked out in this video. I typically don't ride with them locked out. I have done some test runs on the street with them locked out, and it rides really nice.

    No problem with the brakes, yet. The saddle isn't the most comfortable, I'll admit, but it doesn't really bother me.

    Hu, who thought watching some one cycle could be so entertaining. Also just to ask the kind of terrain you where on at 8:00, did the bike preform well on that kind of terrain (thats the kind i do a lot)

  • @bse67
    @bse67 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video, Dean. Question: Do you have any problems with your disc brakes dragging or squeaking? Do they make any noise other than when you apply the brakes? Also, a lot of reviewers say the saddles on the DS series are uncomfortable. What do you think? Thanks.

    After little reading i think ive just about talked myself out of a hybid. Why did you pick a hybrid? Over a road bike or MTB? Im looking at a 2013 Trek Dual Sport 8.3 the blue one..

    Dean I am planning to do some mountain biking with my DS 8.3. You mentioned last year that you used 29X2.0 tires when you hit the mountain trail. I am not sure how this bike perform on mountain trail, do you happen to take any video on Mountain trail?

    • @dlhanse
      @dlhanse  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vincent Phang I never made a video with the 29X2.0 tires on the bike. Sorry. I didn't really like the way the bike handled with the mountain bike tires after all, so I sold them.

    • @vincentphang6370
      @vincentphang6370 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dean Hansen Thanks for the advice. Last Sun I hit a trail that is a little rocky and I find the bike cant really balance well and to some point I had to dismount and pushed it. Looks like I need a proper MTB for mountain trail :-)

    • @danielrice5474
      @danielrice5474 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vincent Phang Maybe try the rock n road tires on it. That's what I will have on my Trek DS that is ordered. They are 700 X 43. They are suppose to do great on rocky ground and roll well on payment. You can google them.

      I have recently put on 2.0 Michelin Wild Grip R on my bike. When I first hit the trail with a mixture of rocks, gravels and sands terrain the bike handled much better and was more stable with excellent grip!

      Way to go! making this choice even harder cause thats amazing! IDK WHAT TO DO!!!! hahaha why is it half the price of a specialized or trek with tho se specs? Maybe better to go used and get a nice FSR SJ or Epic...?
      Thoughts?

    • @Samsonmetaphysical
      @Samsonmetaphysical 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawson Harsch
      I was going through what your going through about a month ago, I bought the Marin. 100% satisfied and I don't got any regrets not buying the Trek DS 8.3, which was my second choice. I had to have the flat olive drab Trek, until I saw the specs on the Marin DS4. The current (2014) DS4 doesn't come close to last years model (2013).

    • @lawsonharsch3332

      Ok! Ill def look into it for sure! The flat olive drab is also beautiful and my first choice in trek. The new crosstrail is gorgeous also, and so the marin....
      I may be looking into a used higher level bike as well so I'll look for a high level marin as well.
