  • here is how i built a bluetooth reciever into an old boombox. i wanted a cheap and cable free solution for my workshop.
i had to rethink the powersupply because i had a bit of a fail-situation in the middle of the project...but it was still a lot of fun!

I am guessing a lot of old videos have been removed. Nobody pops up on TH-cam with such polished and well-put-together video stories without a lot of practice, surely! I do love seeing how much Laura has developed over the past seven years, I am looking forward to binging my way up to the Tiny House videos she is releasing at the moment.

      +Laura Kampf Bob and GH.Dirty are right, real-life commentary on mistake and adaptations are a very pertinent addition to maker videos, and I think this applies also to videos that are especially well crafted, like yours;
      Keep on trucking !

I love your attitude when you ran into trouble Laura! I probably would've pulled up a schematic to find where on the circuit board the power should be connected but hey you rolled with it and came up with another plan, that is being an innovative thinker! Cool project.

I love your attitude about not getting mad and drink some coffee and do some problem solving. I probably would of smashed the thing when the wires broke. I will be thinking about this, the next time something doesn't go right. Thank you for your inspiration.

im glad that you said dont get angry and just think out the problem. i do alot of diy stuff. unfortunately i live in a small 2 bedroom apartment and cant afford much. so everything i do is either with a small hand drill or my trusty jigsaw. i hope to get a small desktop drill press one day. its because i have so few tools to work with that i do get frustrated easy. but just to hear someone and see someone have something go wrong and keep cool about it will help me keep cool to. thank you.

After some wires came loose in an electric guitar of mine years ago, I started taking pictures of electronic devices I open up, as a first step. It gives you a reference if anything goes wrong. Nice work with finding a new solution, though!

Nice work! Easy tip for you, take clear photos of the boards before you start work. A broken wire can easily be traced with a pic. Also a volt meter would have found your 9V also.

Drilling into plastic and thin walled metal...
You know the drill bit likes to jump through the last paper-thin wisp of material and screw through the unfinished hole.
That's because the drill flute lifts the material as it cuts. It doesn't need to though, at least not right where the cutting is happening.
With a small grinding wheel (one of those brown potato chip disks on a Dremel), grind or blunt the cutting edge of the bit so that when you are holding the drill bit vertical, you're holding the Dremel tool horizontal. You only need to remove enough material from the cutting edge to remove about a half mm of material. The bit will still be sharp, but it the leading edge of the flute will be scraping rather than lifting material.
The equivalent effect for a circular saw blade would be to use a blade with a zero or negative tooth rake (recommended for cutting thin-walled material) instead of a standard positive tooth rake.

    For the wire breaking...
In the future just take pictures of the layout inside what you are working on.
That way you have a 'backup' of how things go together just in case of problems.
    On the plus side...you now have a 12vdc direct-powered boombox :)

Like the advice.. ran into a setback when I accidentally "fried" the controller to my ebike with a 48 volt battery instead of the intended 36 volt. I made a modification to the battery with a high voltage "off" switch and had to buy a new controller and a spare ebike motor.
Gonna test drive "version 2" tomorrow.

I'm trying to scoop out an old Skantic boombox that isn't working right. The speakers are fine, but the tape player and volume knob have seen better days. Turns out there's a circuit board covering the cassette deck, and a whole bunch of cables holding said circuit board more or less in place, so it's really hard to scoop the cassette deck out. I'm trying not to have to cut all the cables, but I might have to. It's a jungle in there.
