In some strange way this may have been a bit of therapy for those soldiers. They only saw it as hell on earth, to see it peacefully and it's beauty may have helped them sleep at night. To say goodbye to fellow soldiers killed on that field in peace rather then a quick burial with cannon balls whistling close by. To see your old brothers of war one final time. To know the world was on the verge of war once more but a small comfort that your conflict-your war- is over. You have earned your rest and your retirement. You are the last of your kind. Maybe all of this gave them some peace.
