Our hair is the most diverse hair than any other group. I love my people and seeing my sisters embrace their natural hair is amazing to see. Our hair reaches towards God and it grows beautifully, I am not ashamed of being black nor my hair people can imitate me but they can't out do the doer.

This documentary brought tears to my eyes. It' is so well done. This should be nominated for an Oscar and should win. There have been other documentaries done about black hair but this one covers it all and lifts us up. I'm light skinned and even though I grew up with so called good hair I used to texturize my wavy hair to make it straighter. I stopped doing that 20 years ago and have been natural and loving it. I don't do weaves. I used to color my hair bleached it blonde until I lost a patch. Stopped doing that. I do color my grey but I use all natural henna. No chemicals at all. Its not healthy. Its nice to come full circle and embrace what was given me. Bravo to all who contributed to this wonderfull documentary.

Me same. When I first stopped relaxing my hair 14 years ago, some of the same black women who criticized me have now gone back to natural themselves. I made sure to tell them how nappy their hair is now, like how they told me. 😂

@DeepCDigital I know where and when the term "Black" got its power. What I still question is why choose and settle with a white man's word "black" for a group of people? Your skin comes in many shades of brown not what white man initially said black? When speaking of the Black Power Movement because I was born in the 70's I can't ask those who planted the thought and chose the term "Black" instead of the term "Brown" to take the power back and turn a negative into a positive. The term Brown speaks more truth about skin color and would bridge and encompass even more people like Mexican, South East Asians, Indian, Filipinos, to name a few and those who come from more recent African and "Latin" roots Dominican, Cubans, and those from a country who til this day bares the blows for what they once did, Haitians. IMO since their successful Haitian Revolution that no one really talks about because those in world power don't want a repeat from marginalized groups ever. I know for sure the U.S. doesn't talk about it so you won't learn it in school. Haitians receive so much hate and lack support from countries and are at constant war with their Dominican Republic neighbors. I enjoy the growth of those acknowledging their Afro-Latin roots, culture, and identity. White people have thought of so many ways to dehumanize and belittle (name-calling is one way) to the point where their term (who's term? Whites' term "black people"). There'll be arguments when I say that there was some successful convincing when I say white people's belittlement of enslaved people to think of themselves to nothing but a color, black because we have the issue of colorism.
I loved this documentary and will send it to my grandchildren. It's sad the Black women of today are dealing with the same problem as we did in the 50s and 60s.

I don't know why I'm just now seeing this, but I'm glad it popped up! What a great documentary! I've been wearing my natural hair since before what we are now calling the "natural movement" and way before the "Good Hair" movie came out and I have to say I was laughed at by my "own people" when I started rocking my fro back in 2002! I was relaxed but I got divorced and just decided that I didn't want to relax my hair anymore, so I didn't! But I saw the change coming when other black women started asking me a few years later, "How did I get my hair to do that?"! So, I just shared with them what I was doing and watch the metamorphosis over the years to come! ;-) Oh, and BTW as a "black female computer programmer" in corporate America, I got the looks, and the questions about touching my hair, and I'm sure there were discussions (behind my back) about me wearing my hair in an afro, but fortunately for me at the time, the company I worked for didn't have a specific dress code and I was always dressed professionally, so I think that's why they just let me be. But I'm a "baby boomer" and I have to admit that I have reverted back (just a little bit) by at least putting my hair up into a bun for an interview when I changed jobs, but once I got the job, I rocked my fro! LOL

Hair is often a symbol of beauty, but there's nothing sacred about it. The Bible says that our focus should not be only on the braiding/adornment of the hair, among other things, but on what we are on the inside. Hair is also an issue within our community, and our people, more than any other race, date and marry based on whether the other person has a looser hair curl pattern or a tighter one. We can tell ourselves all we want that our hair is beautiful, but our actions and behavior when it comes to our hair belie that fact. Not everyone who has their hair relaxed do so, because they do not like their natural hair. My thick, curly shoulder-length hair is currently natural, but for ease and convenience's sake, I'm considering having it relaxed. Spending less than one hour each week washing, conditioning and then pulling my hair back in a ponytail and letting it dry naturally is a lot easier than spending three hours of my weekend tending to my natural hair, and more time during the week, especially in the summer months; add up how many hours out of my life that is. Going to the salon ever two or three months to get a touch up, will be the most time I would spend on my hair. Wash and wear hair is what's important to me.

The amount of women saying I don’t mind when being asking can I touch your hair need to mind cause it’s giving petting zoo! Stand up & set your boundaries
Some people have a habit of touching things because of the way it feels. Have you ever thought about that? I had a lot of black people shame me for the way I am growing up without even understanding why I do the things I do. I was able to grow up and eventually figure things out, but people still shame the behavior. Most black women I know seem to hate their own hair and would get mad when I told people my hair was not real, like im ruining the illusion. Most people don't care anymore since a lot of non blk women do it too, but people still touch eachothers hair. I was able to put two and two together and learn that our hair is very delicate and can get dry easily, which can cause it to break, so it's better not to allow anyone to touch it. My mother was not the nurturing type, so it took a while to understand things. I'm noticing the lack of women who have this ability in the community and the issues that arise from people being constantly shamed instead of being nurtured. These women who say it's OK are probably similar, or they are just doing it to feel better than other black women, which is a possibility. Sistahood isn't strong with all the shaming and gossiping.
I am a Latina married to a black man with not necessarily “Spanish wave” hair and decided to do a Twa to remove all processed and damaged hair. I am not bald but is fairly short. The criticism I got was from the people on my same race and mix race 😏 I was very welcomed if I wore very short wig, but the opposite when I left my curly hair out. Everything was good as long as I cover my natural hair. Perhaps, people are seeing so many “perfection” photos online that cannot come to acceptance with reality. Present time, I have my hair short in a pixie natural salt and pepper and style it every now and then and people cannot stay quite complimenting it. I am glad I did not let the mob break me🧡Praise God for His strength 🙏🏽

I think white society and organizations know how important our hair is to us that is why these policies exist. They know that we feel powerful,and independent when our hair is in it's natural state that's why they police it. Shaving and covering our hair during slavery was a method of control. They still feel that telling us how our hair should look is an affective way of keeping us controlled.

I think the real issue should be freedom of choice. We don’t need to feel like we must be one thing or another. It’s our hair. We should be able wear it however we want without judgement or repercussion.

My hair has been natural for over 30 years. I used to wear weaves as well, for the best part of am shamed to say.over 15 years Then I realised I didn't even know how to look after my own hair, and didn't like how I looked without my weave in. I realised I had to embrace my own beautiful hair. I stopped wearing weaves, and learnt how to look after my own natural hair. I even began to make my own hair products, and that is the only thing I use in my hair. I love my beautiful natural hair And I wouldn't change it. Our hair is beautiful, and we as black people need to embrace our beauty. The black cosmetic industry is worth millions, and who do you think owns and runs that market. The white man, the Indian man. They now make wigs with baby hairs. Can you believe that. GOD designed us this way for a reason. Black is beautiful and our natural black hair is beautiful...

I've had locs (on and off) for over 30 years now, but before deciding to get the initial set, I kept my hair relaxed. It wasn't to assimilate, nor was it about shame of my natural texture. It was merely about what I liked to see on myself at that particular time. I liked big hairstyles, so relaxers allowed me to achieve that look. Overtime, I fell in love with the majestic look of locs, so I did the big chop and started locking. Long story short, if a woman decides that she wants to wear her hair relaxed, I'd say get out of her business and don't automatically assume that it's some deep or political reason as to why she chooses to. It could simply be that she likes how she looks with relaxed hair. Every woman has the right to choose the look she wants for herself. Live and let live. Sistas are beautiful no matter what crown we wear. 🙂

THIS! Finally! Sheesh! The pushback for this is “nobody lives in a vacuum” blah blah blah, whine cry whine. It’s truly sad that most people are in fact followers and aren’t conscious of their own feelings apart from outside influence. But I too have literally NEVER pedestalized whiteness nor tried to mimic it. Not even as a child. I actually have my own mind and imagination. I actually know what I just like and dont like. Imagine that.
Just watched this today and it made me proud that these conversations are becoming more commonplace. There are still some stigmas about embracing one's pride and personal decisions for how they wear their hair, whatever style that may be. I appreciate you for sharing this with us.

The documentary is great! I hate that there is so much division in the black community with regard to our hair/bodies. Do what works for you! If youre natural, do that sis! If you’re relaxed, do that sis! If you’re weaved, do that sis! If you want plastic surgery, do that sis! We have to stop making other peoples business our business. We can educate each other on our culture and be proud of it without making other people feel bad for choosing something different.

Great docu. I was just correcting a 23 year old sister a couple weeks back who said the Crown Law was unnecessary. I told her she was showing her age, or rather lack thereof. It wasn't that long ago that you faced discipline at work for not straightening African texture hair. When I first started locs back in '97 it was acceptance that certain doors might close to me, and I was willing to not go through them if that's what it took to be free from chemicals. A year ago I finally cut/unlocked my hair and now I'm mostly a straight natural with twistouts in the Summer. I will put on a wig if I have somewhere to go and don't want to take the time to do my hair, but even my wigs are of black hair. Ultimately I've simply taken ownership of how I present myself, letting that be whatever I feel from day to day, and always having that include avoiding chemicals that might impair my health. I'm grateful for the versatility.

This movie made me cry almost all the way through. I can totally relate to being denied by both jobs and Black Men for my being Dark skinned with braids or curly natural hair. I have fine hair and created a product which grew my hair past my shoulders, but lacked the confidence to promote my product. This movie has encouraged me to move forward and promote my product, especially since fine hair is one of the hardest to maintain.. No one should be denied due to how God created them. Thank you for understanding. We need more movies like this to help people understand the daily challenges we face with our hair. God created us the way he wanted, and no one is unattractive in God’s eye; so, who is anyone to decide our worth based soley on our skin or hair? Lastly, we are not little children needing other ethnicities to act as our Parents. If we are grown enough to produce the products WE NEED, then we are grown enough to use the same, or similar methods to figure out how to distribute them among ourselves.

Love this documentary! Bottom line - proudly wear your hair whatever way you want, be it natural, relaxed, permed, dyed, braided, locks, curly, afro, straight, wavy, etc. and respect others for how they choose to uniquely wear theirs. For true beauty resides in one's heart and inner being (not in one's hair).

I stop chemically processing my hair striaight and braided my while my natural hair grow out and I was talked about by my neighbours that I am an unkept woman who was crazy because they did not like my new hair style as if I live my life for people. However I do my hair is to please me and only me because it is my hair on my own head.

Thank you for this!!! I was 11 when I got my 1st relaxer, and 26 when I decided I was tired of it. I was in my mid-thirties when I discovered the natural hair community on YT and truly unlocked my hair's true potential. It's absolutely beautiful now because I learned how to are for it properly. I finally broke the growth plateau and now it's below my bra strap when straight. But I only straighten once yearly for a good trim. I complimented a beautiful Black young lady today on her hair (which had a fresh set of boho braids) and the smile that came across her face was priceless. I try to speak life into every Black girl and woman I see wearing her natural hair. And the smiles or returned compliments on my hair are always so sweeter and genuine that it just warms my heart. And loved learning more with this movie.

I have gotten to the point where I am so comfortable wearing my natural hair that it doesn’t really phase me meeting new people who have relaxed, weaved, or straight hair. I just respect all people - unless they disrespect me. I think actions always speak louder than words. So people will always remember that I wore my hair natural consistently - I don’t have to preach ever

I'm from and live in Texas, and I remember the case of the braider fighting legally for her right to braid. I'm so glad she was included to tell her story and that she prevailed in her fight. Praise God she didn't quit or give up during the battle.

I'm mixed and struggled with my hair because I was only taught to groom it like fine hair: wash it everyday, even skip conditioner, brush it and put some fine hair product in it, and then it would be all poofy and dry. Going to bed with no bonnet, wondering why my hair would be dry the next morning! In high school it was finally when I learned how to care for my hair and wear it natural and healthy.

That was one of the big factors in my going natural. We were the only race of people that depended on salons for the most basic hair care. Once i started relaxing my hair when I started high school i wasn’t allowed to wash my hair at home and my mom paid for me to get it washed every1-2weeks til i got my own job. My head was greasy and itchy as hell my day 4. I was trying to grow it as long as possible but my stylist was scissor happy. I decided to transition during the second half of my freshman year in college and had no car so i had no choice to wash my own hair. Not washing my own hair til i was 19 years old is ridiculous.

Going natural gave me such a sense of 'self'. I was bullied because of my hair, but all of that was blown away by the wind once I truly embraced the real me. I'm free, and can care less about what others think of how I grow my hair. ✌️

I was just talking to a young lady about her natural hair. She always wore weave, but I went out of my way to complement her and commend her for doing so as a young girl who i'm sure is pressured or criticized about the way she wears her hair. I recommended a couple of books to her, and now I can reccomend this video. Thank you so much for creating this. We should cheer each other on as a people in general, but we should most definetly take notice to those who choose to wear their hair natural in a world that tells us it's not accepted everywhere. When i walk past a woman with her natural hair, especially the afro and I'm wearing mine too, there's this overwheming positive exchange. We will smile, compliment each other, and cheer each other on as we walk past each other. It's just like, when a man compliments me on my natural hair, and how good it smells when i pass by. It's different from a compliment with a wig or weave. It's a good energy that I cant fully discribe.❤😊

This doc reminds me of the India Irie Song: 'I am not my hair' The singer at the end moved me to tears. We are not perfect but we are amazing. I had relaxed hair from aged 13-20. But was hating the procedure, the pain and the upkeep. I had the idea to get dreadlocs in my early 20's and i've still got them now and i'm in my 40's loving my hair style. People ask to touch them. Sometimes i say yes, sometimes i say no. One employer asked me to not wear my hair in locs (i objected and they backed down), my other 2 employers had no issue at all. Overall, bc i'm a more natural, low-maintenance, no make-up, type of woman, locs were the best hair decision I made for ME. I have friends who love to change their hair styles and their looks on a frequent basis so my hair choice may not work best for them. I don't judge. We all live our own lives as proud black women and we all look stunningly beautiful ❤

This documentary is so beautiful. It speaks volumes that black women and men too can relate to no matter your background. Black men go through with their hair too. I saw myself in this...I was like yes yes...that happened to me. I am free to be me. I don't have to change for no one. I really enjoyed this. My hair has been natural for many years, but it will not be seen in public cause the crown is thin due to hormones. The the rest is thick and short , so I choose to wear wigs and enjoy it

There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having elaborate styling. I think that’s why so many struggle with natural hair. I love my natural hair and I’m not being bothered with braids and twist everyday. Nor am I interested in locs because I like touching my bushy fluffy hair as it grows from my head. Will style when I feel like it but most days you get what nature gives.

Now I haven't finished watching this but I just feel the need to stop it somewhere beyond the middle,.. and I'm going to watch it and its entirety...BUT... Oh yeah, from my experience men do like long hair, and straight is a preference especially if it is all yours. No weaves or wigs. My dad would notice when I would get my ends trimmed. When dad met my mom, her hair was a nice length. Then she started cutting it. Dad was not happy. He every so often would mention it on the side over the years. My husband told me that 1 of the features that drew him was my hair. My grandson who is 7 tells me he likes my hair down better. I noticed black men especially like long hair. Go figure. I wear all kinds of styles whether it's natural or straightened. Have to have variety in my life.
This was a great documentary. The only thing is: I take great offense to the woman who says wearing someone else's hair means you don't have a sense of self. Are you kidding me? I pride myself on knowing exactly who I am, knowing what I like and what I don't like. I'm fiercely individual. I've been natural, wore wigs, relaxed, braided, cut in a pixie, an Afro, and now I wear a long and sleek traditional weave with a center part. I enjoyed trying all of those styles and simply doing what I LIKE!!! The conversation is important, but many of us just want the freedom of doing what we want with our hair. I'm not trying to make a political statement. All respect to the women who feel they need to. I appreciate the conversation. Historically, there is a lot of pain and shame attached to black hair. Im transision back right now as we speak i big chopped from relaxing since i was about 5 years old i wasnt used to my natural hair so i went back and relaxed it after i relaxed i felt like i betrayed myself and lost a friend! So now im transision back to natural and after this im never turning back!!!

I LOVE my hair! I'm a 1950's brown baby that wrestled with my hair for YEARS! I pressed and permed my hair to death! My hair would grow out, break off, grow out, break off. I got tired of the merry-go-round, l got off! I cut the perm off, then started getting my hair braided. Beautiful, but sometimes painful if you have a heavy handed braider. Finally! My niece said, Aunt Celeste, why don't you dred your hair. After some deliberation, l pulled the trigger. I haven't looked back! No more breakage first of all! Pin it up, let it down. I'm ready for any occasion! Not making any political statement or "spiritual" connotation. Just a healthy head of hair that reaches down to my but! That's that. Thank you.😊

Wow!!😮 Great documentary and I needed to hear this. I’ve been natural for 3 years now and I’ve definitely taken notes on what our ancestors used to grow natural hair. It seems like people have always been very interested in black hair but not enough to actually learn the TRUTH about it and where it comes from. Previous blacks before us had it much harder and you HAVE to show respect. I will no longer let ANY women touch my hair because they want too ; it’s not right and I honestly always felt weird. I specifically remember being in grade school and my best friend at time would literally give me a full on scalp massage while watching movies together, but now I realize it was because of my curls, she is white but i honestly didn’t see a problem with it at the time. Black women with 4c also feel they can just touch my curls without asking, I find that just as rude. Now, I completely understand what’s going on.I remember being on a competitive basketball ball team and we had 2 black girls on the team. The whole team would have slumber parties and everyone would play in each other’s hair. I let those white girls give me french braids and things but it was so obvious they wanted to try to braid my hair the most, they always claimed how much easier it was to braid compared to straight hair. I never got rude comments about my hair texture from whites though, it was typically blacks that thought it was nappy or unkept. I have 3b/3c/4a curls so I can make my hair appear loose or brush that baby out and pretty much have a dropped fro. When wearing it without a noticeable curl pattern, even when driving in the car, I can see people staring at me through the fucking window. Like y’all ain’t ever seen big black hair, like get the fuck outta here, i’ll take my black ass back to the mother land.

Today August 15th 2024 I embraced my natural hair at my root , I gave myself a crew cut and going salt and pepper finally and cut my bleached ends off, I love it especially after watching this documentary. thank you. 🥰

The wierd part of them thinking braids are unprofessional, is that braids are like the most Royal looking, like the patterns and beads ... Braids are so fantastic. And the lady saying she "needed to put a wig on ,or grow some hair"... It's like no matter what you do your hair is going to be a problem. Because once you grow some more hair its distracting cuz it's too big

I think the biggest difference between the movement then and now is the emphasis on LEARNING about caring for the hair vs just wearing it out as a political statement. I love afros but for me after my hair grew past a certain length it meant dryness and tangle city at the end of the day. We still need work as I find alot us us naturals now are relaxer free but hiding under wigs and weaves and using protective styling as an excuse. Im guilty as well. The militant “hair rules” from the the early days of natural hair care on TH-cam don’t help. It overcomplicated hair care.
I love this documentary. I’ve been grateful that my mom never permed my hair and was committed to never chemically altering my hair. I love my Afro and it’s the way I feel the most myself. Despite this, we kinda butt heads on our definition of natural as I don’t like straightening my hair that much. I like my occasional blowout for maintenance and just the style, but I always gravitate towards braids and I have to have my fro in between or I genuinely start feeling disconnected and unhappy. Nothing makes me feel better than being able to feel my curls and puff under my hands. It’s been difficult to commit to it as I have faced a lot of criticism from my family about the way my hair looks when I do wear it out. I still hurt over the first time I wore my Afro voluntarily without putting it into a ponytail or anything. I had to take it out of the ponytail after my mom dropped me off at school so that I was even allowed out the house the way I looked. I was 8. I felt powerful, like I was on top of the world. I kept going to the bathroom just to look at it. I had this big, beautiful, healthy Afro. I was in love. I shocked a few at school as they’d never seen an Afro in public (PWI Christian private school). I got asked a lot how I got it to stand like that and I told them it’s how it grows. I had other black kids in my school who were just surprised that I was at school with my hair natural. It was extremely taboo. Regardless, my stride was unbroken and I felt so beautiful. That was until I got back to my grandma’s house. Immediately once I walked through the door, full smile, all my aunts and my grandma turned and gave me this look. “Did your mom not do your hair?” (She did, I took it out) “Who let you out the house like that?” (I wanted it this way) Just generally showing disgust towards my hair. They made me feel gross. Made me feel like I was doing something wrong, and that I was both disrespecting my mom as well as making her look neglectful to me. That made me mad because my mom took such good care of me and my hair so that it was as healthy as it was. She protected me so I could even get to the point where I could choose it. I cried to my mom after she picked me up and she told me they were just worried about me and trying to protect me. That they grew up in a different time and were scared for me. As much as I know where they were coming from, it still hurts. I still get more crap about my hair from my own family and my own people than anyone else. I still have to swat hands and I have to check people when they make rules that are very obviously racist against my hair or not considerate of my texture. I do musical theatre and used to dance and you could guess how often there’d be the assumption that I could simply put my hair into a ponytail or back into a fro without tools and quickly despite having a fro. I love my hair, and I found out in later years the impact that having my hair natural and in fros all the time had on the black people around me. I helped other black girls feel confident to wear their own fros proudly, so I doubly feel powerful and beautiful wearing mine. I recently cut my hair for the first time, and it’s been a weird adjustment, but it’s helped a lot with being able to maintain my hair through different levels of motivation and mental wellness. I think I’m going to grow it back out, and it’ll be even thicker and bigger than before now that my ends are as thick as my roots.
I still turn heads with my fro to this day, and it’s my favorite thing. I feel so connected to my ancestors and my history wearing it proudly for all those before me who couldn’t. I do believe it is spiritual. As a Christian, I love radically sporting my body as it was created. I am fearfully and wonderfully made, no matter what

Last 2 weeks, a colleague rubbed her dirty hands on my hair during which time she was using a broom to sweep a dining room. I was super upset about it and told her my hair was off limits and she asked "but why" and i told her i absolutely needed to keep my hair clean. She said i was being too dramatic. Last week another colleague came from behind me and practically had her hands swimming in my hair. I told her it shouldn't repeat itself, she too was very surprised and asked why? It's just ridiculous. To deep condition, wash and twist this hair on my own takes a whole lot of time and i cannot be having people feeling so entitled to just deep their disgusting dirty hands into my hair😢😢 😢😢

As a professional adult while in my 30’s straightened my hair, in my 40’s, wigs and braids only on vacation. Natural hair, I just couldn’t because it wasn’t the American way. But in my late 40’s a shift happened and my hair and I are okay with being natural. I’ve had black men offer to pay for my hair to get done. But, I know who I am and when I finish educating or refuse to engage, I am satisfied with all of myself, all of myself.

Our hair is the most diverse hair than any other group. I love my people and seeing my sisters embrace their natural hair is amazing to see. Our hair reaches towards God and it grows beautifully, I am not ashamed of being black nor my hair people can imitate me but they can't out do the doer.

This documentary brought tears to my eyes. It' is so well done. This should be nominated for an Oscar and should win. There have been other documentaries done about black hair but this one covers it all and lifts us up. I'm light skinned and even though I grew up with so called good hair I used to texturize my wavy hair to make it straighter. I stopped doing that 20 years ago and have been natural and loving it. I don't do weaves. I used to color my hair bleached it blonde until I lost a patch. Stopped doing that. I do color my grey but I use all natural henna. No chemicals at all. Its not healthy. Its nice to come full circle and embrace what was given me. Bravo to all who contributed to this wonderfull documentary.

@DeepCDigital I know where and when the term "Black" got its power. What I still question is why choose and settle with a white man's word "black" for a group of people? Your skin comes in many shades of brown not what white man initially said black? When speaking of the Black Power Movement because I was born in the 70's I can't ask those who planted the thought and chose the term "Black" instead of the term "Brown" to take the power back and turn a negative into a positive. The term Brown speaks more truth about skin color and would bridge and encompass even more people like Mexican, South East Asians, Indian, Filipinos, to name a few and those who come from more recent African and "Latin" roots Dominican, Cubans, and those from a country who til this day bares the blows for what they once did, Haitians. IMO since their successful Haitian Revolution that no one really talks about because those in world power don't want a repeat from marginalized groups ever. I know for sure the U.S. doesn't talk about it so you won't learn it in school. Haitians receive so much hate and lack support from countries and are at constant war with their Dominican Republic neighbors. I enjoy the growth of those acknowledging their Afro-Latin roots, culture, and identity. White people have thought of so many ways to dehumanize and belittle (name-calling is one way) to the point where their term (who's term? Whites' term "black people"). There'll be arguments when I say that there was some successful convincing when I say white people's belittlement of enslaved people to think of themselves to nothing but a color, black because we have the issue of colorism.
I loved this documentary and will send it to my grandchildren. It's sad the Black women of today are dealing with the same problem as we did in the 50s and 60s.

Generational trauma and racism
I don't know why I'm just now seeing this, but I'm glad it popped up! What a great documentary! I've been wearing my natural hair since before what we are now calling the "natural movement" and way before the "Good Hair" movie came out and I have to say I was laughed at by my "own people" when I started rocking my fro back in 2002! I was relaxed but I got divorced and just decided that I didn't want to relax my hair anymore, so I didn't! But I saw the change coming when other black women started asking me a few years later, "How did I get my hair to do that?"! So, I just shared with them what I was doing and watch the metamorphosis over the years to come! ;-) Oh, and BTW as a "black female computer programmer" in corporate America, I got the looks, and the questions about touching my hair, and I'm sure there were discussions (behind my back) about me wearing my hair in an afro, but fortunately for me at the time, the company I worked for didn't have a specific dress code and I was always dressed professionally, so I think that's why they just let me be. But I'm a "baby boomer" and I have to admit that I have reverted back (just a little bit) by at least putting my hair up into a bun for an interview when I changed jobs, but once I got the job, I rocked my fro! LOL

Hair is often a symbol of beauty, but there's nothing sacred about it.
The Bible says that our focus should not be only on the braiding/adornment of the hair, among other things, but on what we are on the inside.
Hair is also an issue within our community, and our people, more than any other race, date and marry based on whether the other person has a looser hair curl pattern or a tighter one. We can tell ourselves all we want that our hair is beautiful, but our actions and behavior when it comes to our hair belie that fact.
Not everyone who has their hair relaxed do so, because they do not like their natural hair. My thick, curly shoulder-length hair is currently natural, but for ease and convenience's sake, I'm considering having it relaxed.
Spending less than one hour each week washing, conditioning and then pulling my hair back in a ponytail and letting it dry naturally is a lot easier than spending three hours of my weekend tending to my natural hair, and more time during the week, especially in the summer months; add up how many hours out of my life that is. Going to the salon ever two or three months to get a touch up, will be the most time I would spend on my hair.
Wash and wear hair is what's important to me.
Then why do y’all cover it with Brazilian/Indian hair? 😂

Some people have a habit of touching things because of the way it feels. Have you ever thought about that?
I had a lot of black people shame me for the way I am growing up without even understanding why I do the things I do. I was able to grow up and eventually figure things out, but people still shame the behavior. Most black women I know seem to hate their own hair and would get mad when I told people my hair was not real, like im ruining the illusion. Most people don't care anymore since a lot of non blk women do it too, but people still touch eachothers hair. I was able to put two and two together and learn that our hair is very delicate and can get dry easily, which can cause it to break, so it's better not to allow anyone to touch it.
My mother was not the nurturing type, so it took a while to understand things. I'm noticing the lack of women who have this ability in the community and the issues that arise from people being constantly shamed instead of being nurtured. These women who say it's OK are probably similar, or they are just doing it to feel better than other black women, which is a possibility. Sistahood isn't strong with all the shaming and gossiping.

I am a Latina married to a black man with not necessarily “Spanish wave” hair and decided to do a Twa to remove all processed and damaged hair. I am not bald but is fairly short. The criticism I got was from the people on my same race and mix race 😏 I was very welcomed if I wore very short wig, but the opposite when I left my curly hair out. Everything was good as long as I cover my natural hair.
Perhaps, people are seeing so many “perfection” photos online that cannot come to acceptance with reality.
Present time, I have my hair short in a pixie natural salt and pepper and style it every now and then and people cannot stay quite complimenting it. I am glad I did not let the mob break me🧡Praise God for His strength 🙏🏽

I think white society and organizations know how important our hair is to us that is why these policies exist. They know that we feel powerful,and independent when our hair is in it's natural state that's why they police it. Shaving and covering our hair during slavery was a method of control. They still feel that telling us how our hair should look is an affective way of keeping us controlled.

I think the real issue should be freedom of choice. We don’t need to feel like we must be one thing or another. It’s our hair. We should be able wear it however we want without judgement or repercussion.

My hair has been natural for over 30 years. I used to wear weaves as well, for the best part of am shamed to say.over 15 years
Then I realised I didn't even know how to look after my own hair, and didn't like how I looked without my weave in.
I realised I had to embrace my own beautiful hair.
I stopped wearing weaves, and learnt how to look after my own natural hair.
I even began to make my own hair products, and that is the only thing I use in my hair.
I love my beautiful natural hair
And I wouldn't change it.
Our hair is beautiful, and we as black people need to embrace our beauty.
The black cosmetic industry is worth millions, and who do you think owns and runs that market.
The white man, the Indian man.
They now make wigs with baby hairs. Can you believe that.
GOD designed us this way for a reason. Black is beautiful and our natural black hair is beautiful...

I'm no teacher. They might never have manners but they WILL show respect for my personal space.
I've had locs (on and off) for over 30 years now, but before deciding to get the initial set, I kept my hair relaxed. It wasn't to assimilate, nor was it about shame of my natural texture. It was merely about what I liked to see on myself at that particular time. I liked big hairstyles, so relaxers allowed me to achieve that look. Overtime, I fell in love with the majestic look of locs, so I did the big chop and started locking.
Long story short, if a woman decides that she wants to wear her hair relaxed, I'd say get out of her business and don't automatically assume that it's some deep or political reason as to why she chooses to. It could simply be that she likes how she looks with relaxed hair. Every woman has the right to choose the look she wants for herself.
Live and let live. Sistas are beautiful no matter what crown we wear. 🙂

The pushback for this is “nobody lives in a vacuum” blah blah blah, whine cry whine. It’s truly sad that most people are in fact followers and aren’t conscious of their own feelings apart from outside influence. But I too have literally NEVER pedestalized whiteness nor tried to mimic it. Not even as a child. I actually have my own mind and imagination. I actually know what I just like and dont like. Imagine that.
I’m pretty sure a lot of those who have relaxed hair, are the ones bullying BW whose hair is natural, so who gaf.
Just watched this today and it made me proud that these conversations are becoming more commonplace. There are still some stigmas about embracing one's pride and personal decisions for how they wear their hair, whatever style that may be. I appreciate you for sharing this with us.

The documentary is great! I hate that there is so much division in the black community with regard to our hair/bodies. Do what works for you! If youre natural, do that sis! If you’re relaxed, do that sis! If you’re weaved, do that sis! If you want plastic surgery, do that sis! We have to stop making other peoples business our business. We can educate each other on our culture and be proud of it without making other people feel bad for choosing something different.

Great docu. I was just correcting a 23 year old sister a couple weeks back who said the Crown Law was unnecessary. I told her she was showing her age, or rather lack thereof. It wasn't that long ago that you faced discipline at work for not straightening African texture hair. When I first started locs back in '97 it was acceptance that certain doors might close to me, and I was willing to not go through them if that's what it took to be free from chemicals.
A year ago I finally cut/unlocked my hair and now I'm mostly a straight natural with twistouts in the Summer. I will put on a wig if I have somewhere to go and don't want to take the time to do my hair, but even my wigs are of black hair. Ultimately I've simply taken ownership of how I present myself, letting that be whatever I feel from day to day, and always having that include avoiding chemicals that might impair my health. I'm grateful for the versatility.

This movie made me cry almost all the way through. I can totally relate to being denied by both jobs and Black Men for my being Dark skinned with braids or curly natural hair. I have fine hair and created a product which grew my hair past my shoulders, but lacked the confidence to promote my product.
This movie has encouraged me to move forward and promote my product, especially since fine hair is one of the hardest to maintain.. No one should be denied due to how God created them.
Thank you for understanding. We need more movies like this to help people understand the daily challenges we face with our hair. God created us the way he wanted, and no one is unattractive in God’s eye; so, who is anyone to decide our worth based soley on our skin or hair?
Lastly, we are not little children needing other ethnicities to act as our Parents. If we are grown enough to produce the products WE NEED, then we are grown enough to use the same, or similar methods to figure out how to distribute them among ourselves.

Bottom line - proudly wear your hair whatever way you want, be it natural, relaxed, permed, dyed, braided, locks, curly, afro, straight, wavy, etc. and respect others for how they choose to uniquely wear theirs. I stop chemically processing my hair striaight and braided my while my natural hair grow out and I was talked about by my neighbours that I am an unkept woman who was crazy because they did not like my new hair style as if I live my life for people. Oh waw, what a bunch of racists! I have no idea how the Africans deported in America psychologicamly manage to survive with all that white garbage all around. Y'all must be traumatised h/24. Thank you for this!!! I was 11 when I got my 1st relaxer, and 26 when I decided I was tired of it. I was in my mid-thirties when I discovered the natural hair community on YT and truly unlocked my hair's true potential. It's absolutely beautiful now because I learned how to are for it properly. I finally broke the growth plateau and now it's below my bra strap when straight. But I only straighten once yearly for a good trim. I complimented a beautiful Black young lady today on her hair (which had a fresh set of boho braids) and the smile that came across her face was priceless. I try to speak life into every Black girl and woman I see wearing her natural hair. And the smiles or returned compliments on my hair are always so sweeter and genuine that it just warms my heart. And loved learning more with this movie.

I'm mixed and struggled with my hair because I was only taught to groom it like fine hair: wash it everyday, even skip conditioner, brush it and put some fine hair product in it, and then it would be all poofy and dry. Going to bed with no bonnet, wondering why my hair would be dry the next morning! In high school it was finally when I learned how to care for my hair and wear it natural and healthy.

That was one of the big factors in my going natural. We were the only race of people that depended on salons for the most basic hair care. Once i started relaxing my hair when I started high school i wasn’t allowed to wash my hair at home and my mom paid for me to get it washed every1-2weeks til i got my own job. My head was greasy and itchy as hell my day 4. I was trying to grow it as long as possible but my stylist was scissor happy.
I decided to transition during the second half of my freshman year in college and had no car so i had no choice to wash my own hair. Not washing my own hair til i was 19 years old is ridiculous.
i saw this documentary last year and i loved it thank you for loading it on youtube and i have been bumpin the natural sista song sense then THANK YOU!!!

Going natural gave me such a sense of 'self'. I was bullied because of my hair, but all of that was blown away by the wind once I truly embraced the real me. I'm free, and can care less about what others think of how I grow my hair. ✌️

I was just talking to a young lady about her natural hair. She always wore weave, but I went out of my way to complement her and commend her for doing so as a young girl who i'm sure is pressured or criticized about the way she wears her hair. I recommended a couple of books to her, and now I can reccomend this video. Thank you so much for creating this. We should cheer each other on as a people in general, but we should most definetly take notice to those who choose to wear their hair natural in a world that tells us it's not accepted everywhere. When i walk past a woman with her natural hair, especially the afro and I'm wearing mine too, there's this overwheming positive exchange. We will smile, compliment each other, and cheer each other on as we walk past each other. It's just like, when a man compliments me on my natural hair, and how good it smells when i pass by. It's different from a compliment with a wig or weave. It's a good energy that I cant fully discribe.❤😊

This doc reminds me of the India Irie Song: 'I am not my hair'
The singer at the end moved me to tears. We are not perfect but we are amazing.
I had relaxed hair from aged 13-20. But was hating the procedure, the pain and the upkeep. I had the idea to get dreadlocs in my early 20's and i've still got them now and i'm in my 40's loving my hair style. People ask to touch them. Sometimes i say yes, sometimes i say no.
One employer asked me to not wear my hair in locs (i objected and they backed down), my other 2 employers had no issue at all.
Overall, bc i'm a more natural, low-maintenance, no make-up, type of woman, locs were the best hair decision I made for ME. I have friends who love to change their hair styles and their looks on a frequent basis so my hair choice may not work best for them. I don't judge. We all live our own lives as proud black women and we all look stunningly beautiful ❤

There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having elaborate styling. I think that’s why so many struggle with natural hair. I love my natural hair and I’m not being bothered with braids and twist everyday. Nor am I interested in locs because I like touching my bushy fluffy hair as it grows from my head. Will style when I feel like it but most days you get what nature gives.

Now I haven't finished watching this but I just feel the need to stop it somewhere beyond the middle,.. and I'm going to watch it and its entirety...BUT... Oh yeah, from my experience men do like long hair, and straight is a preference especially if it is all yours. No weaves or wigs. My dad would notice when I would get my ends trimmed. When dad met my mom, her hair was a nice length. Then she started cutting it. Dad was not happy. He every so often would mention it on the side over the years. My husband told me that 1 of the features that drew him was my hair. My grandson who is 7 tells me he likes my hair down better. I noticed black men especially like long hair. Go figure. I wear all kinds of styles whether it's natural or straightened. Have to have variety in my life.

This was a great documentary. The only thing is: I take great offense to the woman who says wearing someone else's hair means you don't have a sense of self. Are you kidding me? I pride myself on knowing exactly who I am, knowing what I like and what I don't like. I'm fiercely individual. I've been natural, wore wigs, relaxed, braided, cut in a pixie, an Afro, and now I wear a long and sleek traditional weave with a center part. I enjoyed trying all of those styles and simply doing what I LIKE!!! The conversation is important, but many of us just want the freedom of doing what we want with our hair. I'm not trying to make a political statement. All respect to the women who feel they need to. I appreciate the conversation. Historically, there is a lot of pain and shame attached to black hair. At the end of the day, I'm a grown woman. I'm also a free woman, working for my coins. I just want to look cute and do me. 🙏💕

I LOVE my hair! I'm a 1950's brown baby that wrestled with my hair for YEARS! I pressed and permed my hair to death! My hair would grow out, break off, grow out, break off. I got tired of the merry-go-round, l got off! I cut the perm off, then started getting my hair braided. Beautiful, but sometimes painful if you have a heavy handed braider. Finally! My niece said, Aunt Celeste, why don't you dred your hair. After some deliberation, l pulled the trigger. I haven't looked back! No more breakage first of all! Pin it up, let it down. I'm ready for any occasion! Not making any political statement or "spiritual" connotation. Just a healthy head of hair that reaches down to my but! That's that. Thank you.😊

Wow!!😮 Great documentary and I needed to hear this. I’ve been natural for 3 years now and I’ve definitely taken notes on what our ancestors used to grow natural hair. It seems like people have always been very interested in black hair but not enough to actually learn the TRUTH about it and where it comes from. Previous blacks before us had it much harder and you HAVE to show respect. I will no longer let ANY women touch my hair because they want too ; it’s not right and I honestly always felt weird. I specifically remember being in grade school and my best friend at time would literally give me a full on scalp massage while watching movies together, but now I realize it was because of my curls, she is white but i honestly didn’t see a problem with it at the time. Black women with 4c also feel they can just touch my curls without asking, I find that just as rude. Now, I completely understand what’s going on.I remember being on a competitive basketball ball team and we had 2 black girls on the team. The whole team would have slumber parties and everyone would play in each other’s hair. I let those white girls give me french braids and things but it was so obvious they wanted to try to braid my hair the most, they always claimed how much easier it was to braid compared to straight hair. I never got rude comments about my hair texture from whites though, it was typically blacks that thought it was nappy or unkept. I have 3b/3c/4a curls so I can make my hair appear loose or brush that baby out and pretty much have a dropped fro. When wearing it without a noticeable curl pattern, even when driving in the car, I can see people staring at me through the fucking window. Like y’all ain’t ever seen big black hair, like get the fuck outta here, i’ll take my black ass back to the mother land.

The wierd part of them thinking braids are unprofessional, is that braids are like the most Royal looking, like the patterns and beads ... Braids are so fantastic. And the lady saying she "needed to put a wig on ,or grow some hair"... It's like no matter what you do your hair is going to be a problem. I think the biggest difference between the movement then and now is the emphasis on LEARNING about caring for the hair vs just wearing it out as a political statement. I love afros but for me after my hair grew past a certain length it meant dryness and tangle city at the end of the day.
We still need work as I find alot us us naturals now are relaxer free but hiding under wigs and weaves and using protective styling as an excuse. Im guilty as well. The militant “hair rules” from the the early days of natural hair care on TH-cam don’t help. It overcomplicated hair care.
I love this documentary. I’ve been grateful that my mom never permed my hair and was committed to never chemically altering my hair. I love my Afro and it’s the way I feel the most myself. Despite this, we kinda butt heads on our definition of natural as I don’t like straightening my hair that much. I like my occasional blowout for maintenance and just the style, but I always gravitate towards braids and I have to have my fro in between or I genuinely start feeling disconnected and unhappy. Nothing makes me feel better than being able to feel my curls and puff under my hands. It’s been difficult to commit to it as I have faced a lot of criticism from my family about the way my hair looks when I do wear it out.
I still hurt over the first time I wore my Afro voluntarily without putting it into a ponytail or anything. I had to take it out of the ponytail after my mom dropped me off at school so that I was even allowed out the house the way I looked. I was 8. I felt powerful, like I was on top of the world. I kept going to the bathroom just to look at it. I had this big, beautiful, healthy Afro. I was in love. I shocked a few at school as they’d never seen an Afro in public (PWI Christian private school). I got asked a lot how I got it to stand like that and I told them it’s how it grows. I had other black kids in my school who were just surprised that I was at school with my hair natural. It was extremely taboo. Regardless, my stride was unbroken and I felt so beautiful. That was until I got back to my grandma’s house. Immediately once I walked through the door, full smile, all my aunts and my grandma turned and gave me this look. “Did your mom not do your hair?” (She did, I took it out) “Who let you out the house like that?” (I wanted it this way) Just generally showing disgust towards my hair. They made me feel gross. Made me feel like I was doing something wrong, and that I was both disrespecting my mom as well as making her look neglectful to me. That made me mad because my mom took such good care of me and my hair so that it was as healthy as it was. She protected me so I could even get to the point where I could choose it. I cried to my mom after she picked me up and she told me they were just worried about me and trying to protect me. That they grew up in a different time and were scared for me.
As much as I know where they were coming from, it still hurts. I still get more crap about my hair from my own family and my own people than anyone else. I still have to swat hands and I have to check people when they make rules that are very obviously racist against my hair or not considerate of my texture. I do musical theatre and used to dance and you could guess how often there’d be the assumption that I could simply put my hair into a ponytail or back into a fro without tools and quickly despite having a fro.
I love my hair, and I found out in later years the impact that having my hair natural and in fros all the time had on the black people around me. I helped other black girls feel confident to wear their own fros proudly, so I doubly feel powerful and beautiful wearing mine. I recently cut my hair for the first time, and it’s been a weird adjustment, but it’s helped a lot with being able to maintain my hair through different levels of motivation and mental wellness. I think I’m going to grow it back out, and it’ll be even thicker and bigger than before now that my ends are as thick as my roots.
I still turn heads with my fro to this day, and it’s my favorite thing. I feel so connected to my ancestors and my history wearing it proudly for all those before me who couldn’t. I do believe it is spiritual. As a Christian, I love radically sporting my body as it was created. I am fearfully and wonderfully made, no matter what

Last 2 weeks, a colleague rubbed her dirty hands on my hair during which time she was using a broom to sweep a dining room. I was super upset about it and told her my hair was off limits and she asked "but why" and i told her i absolutely needed to keep my hair clean. She said i was being too dramatic.
Last week another colleague came from behind me and practically had her hands swimming in my hair. I told her it shouldn't repeat itself, she too was very surprised and asked why?
It's just ridiculous. To deep condition, wash and twist this hair on my own takes a whole lot of time and i cannot be having people feeling so entitled to just deep their disgusting dirty hands into my hair😢😢 😢😢

As a professional adult while in my 30’s straightened my hair, in my 40’s, wigs and braids only on vacation. Natural hair, I just couldn’t because it wasn’t the American way. But in my late 40’s a shift happened and my hair and I are okay with being natural. I’ve had black men offer to pay for my hair to get done. But, I know who I am and when I finish educating or refuse to engage, I am satisfied with all of myself, all of myself.
