- The Hypto Krypto has been a fan favorite for over 10 years - so let's check out the Hypto Krypto, and breakdown why it might be a necessary addition to your quiver!
The Hypto Krypto I have been riding is a custom which is 5'7 x 20 x 2 1/2 - 30.7 litres.
I've been lucky enough to check out the Hypto Krypto in a variety of conditions both big and small, and in waves which were good and bad, and i was really impressed by the versatility and performance of the board across such as wide range of conditions.
You may have seen footage of the Hypto Krypto surfing large waves in Indonesia and around the world, and this was what really intrigued me about the board, as the majority of surfing I had seen on the Hypto Krypto was of local surfers in average local conditions.
There is a lot of paddle power in the Hypto Krypto with a lot of well distributed foam sitting directly under your chest which makes getting into waves really easy, and then when up on the wave and going, this foam is under your front foot which helps maintain speed, especially across fat and weak sections. But getting back on the tail of this board, I was really impressed of what it was capable of when given a section, and it performance just like my favorite high performance shortbread and very capable of performance surfing.
The Hypto Krypto is extremely user friendly for both beginner surfers, through to quite advanced surfers, and ultimately equates to a one board quiver capable of surfing in a quite wide range of conditions.

The Hypto Krypto is a balance of tradition and modern performance. Suited to the elite level surfer to the everyday surfer, it is often referred to as the ‘one board quiver’ for its versatility across all types of surf conditions - from small 1-3 ft beach breaks, to barrels of up to 8ft.
In the Hypto Krypto I rode two sets of fins both by Futures Fins -
In larger surf with more push, I rode the AM2 by Futures Fins. This is a fin I know well, and gave me the ultimate control of the board when I wasn't trying to generate a lot of speed.

In smaller surf when I wanted to generate more speed, and the waves had less push, I rode the HS1 thruster set by Futures. These are a speed generating fin and really gave the board an extra gear in smaller and more average waves.

Great review and great channel. I agree with pretty much everything in the review. I've been riding a 5'4 Hypto for about 5 to 6 years now. My take on this board is that it performs amazingly well in clean surf. It's quick, it's fast and lively, works in small and bigger surf. However I find it pretty average with onshore wind. The epoxy and the bigger rails tend to make the board bouncy and the rails harder to engage. So never my board of choice for average conditions. Great board to have in a quiver to mix things up and get a different feel than the traditional shortboard.

See a lot of comments about height/weight and volume. Definitely a personal preference and it’s only one aspect of a board. That being said, I think it would be very helpful to viewers to let them know your height n weight when going over board dims- and add the fact that you like your boards “under volumed” - Many would be super frustrated if they sized there boards the same as you, so that would be very helpful in guiding people to size boards that don’t have enough experience to have that dialed in. Great reviews!!

For those that follow our reviews they would be aware of that, and also on our Instagram I harp on about volume/sizing being such a personal preference. And due to this, I also don’t want to give advice on sizing etc, so I leave me weight/height out of it.
If anything I might mention where to go in sizing from your preferred sizing/volume, but I’m a massive believer that there’s nothing quite like picking up a board and putting it under your arm to get a good feel for the size etc. 👍

Craig, Do you think a straight Thruster set up would surf differently than a 5fin Thruster set up? I know Hayden moved the fins up 1/8 of an inch to accommodate for the 5 fin. I think the extra boxes might affect the tail flex as well??? Would the Hayden fins work in head high conditions?

Depends how big you are - but yes it's a great board, and should be more than capable to do all the surfing you want to do!

I felt this board went better in bigger surf..the shred sled was better for me in those condition in the review..I tried heaps of fins but went back the HS fin.. Fun board to ride tho✌️
Janice James you though the Shred Sled surfed better in junkier conditions? I had one years and years ago, but don’t remember how it went. I thought the Hypto was super versatile and seemed to go well in everything! 🤙

I spoke with Hayden when I ordered this, and suggested trying to not go too long - so that is why we did a custom 5'7. Maybe focus on the volume you ride, and try and keep it shorter if you can...
Hey Craig, great review thanks! I’m exactly your height and weight and been riding a 44 L tomo evo. Want to come down in volume but fear losing wave catching power. How does this board compare to tomo evo? Can they complement each other? Even if both are same volume?

man...i never so you surf that good in any of your reviews.you reaally made me think to give this board a try after surfing for 38 years.all this years i had so many boards but this one looked to strange for me...one thing though: i'm a rear foot surfer usually prefer wide swallow tail blocks...any thing you can remark on that?

I’m also someone who normally likes wide/square tail blocks, but this is fine, can’t comment on anything detrimental about it as it pulled the board in and I feel it aided its performance. ✌️

Epic review! I wonder why people use large fins like HS1 & AM2 rather than HS2 & AM1 even though their weight is below 80 kgs/180lbs?
Are there any benefits for using larger fins comparing to the smaller ones?
Yeah, the larger are more popular - especially in the AM's! Don't know why, I think it would be testament to good surfing to be able to turn well with a bigger/solid fin!
It seems counterintuitive but I’ve always heard you can use larger fins for smaller weaker waves and smaller fins when the waves are pumping.
The larger surface area, and especially the wider base of the large fins will help you create drive and therefore generate your own speed when compressing and extending or pumping in weak surf.
Medium (or smaller) fins are all that is required in waves with more push/power. The energy of the wave provides the necessary speed and hold to push through turns at higher speed, even with the smaller fin size.
@thesurfboarduide whats your thoughts of the Hypto Krypto in the PE-C Construction?
Haven't ridden it as a HK, but did ride the PE-C in The Loot and it felt good!

Javier Bustinza hey! In very tiny surf, the Cab Sav. But for something that’s more of an all rounder, the Hypto Krypto. It paddles really well and catches waves very easily, and performs in most conditions from 1-6ft.

Hey! Probably not, I think Noel at Surf & Show just did a review, so i'll try not to double up! I'd probably be keener to heck out some of HS's older models, the Lovebuzz and the Psych Germ are two of the best boards I've ever ridden!
I am looking for this board, but I read that it is not that strong and you can have dings pretty fast. Not that I am a nervous on the board but if it could last long would be better. I should check on the HS website, maybe I could custom it with another glassing...
MrPaulo1400 hey! You can get the Hypto Krypto in Futureflex like this one which is a stringerless EPS technology. Or you could get it in standard stringer/glassing if you are more confident in this construction.
I’ve surfed this board around 20 times, it has very minimal pressuring on the deck and no issues with construction, and I’m pretty heavy on my feet at 90kgs...
Maybe try check one out and give it a good feel under the arm and see what you think!

Hey! I had one about two years ago and it was good.
Felt great in waves 4-6 ft and had good paddle power and flow.
Was going to do a review, but we rarely get bigger/better waves and felt it was going to be too hard to film decent surfing...
Great review! I'm looking at getting one. I'm 55 y/o and surfing most of my life on shortboards. I'm 174 cm ( 5'8 1/2") and 68-69 kg and in good shape. Now and days I like more volume for ease of paddling and catching more waves (more waves = more fun for me!). I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for that as well. Do you think a 5'8" at 31 L would still be too big for me for this model? I'm used to riding 6'6" and 7'0" Jimmy Lewis Destroyers (mini tankers) with volumes in the low and mid 40's respectively! I have a blast on the 7'0" in waist high + surf too. I have tough time even surfing my 6'0" CI Fever at 29L anymore, too squirly and too hard to paddle these days for me! The HK would be more for knee to head high waves....and not too hollow here. Thanks in advance!
Hey! I'd say try and get to a shop and put one under your arm if you can, sizing is so personal.
I know that speaking to a lot of people that getting the HK too big can be horrible and they really limit performance for people that can actually surf, so you want to get it just right! I'd say maybe even try and get a custom 5'6, but get it a bit thicker/wider to put 30-31L into it...
@@TheSurfboardGuide Surfer for 30+ yrs and I also made the mistake of buying my hypto a bit to big! I tried it with HS fins, in the 3 and 4 fin set ups. It was fine but just felt to full and thought it could use a more refined rail especially in the party (forward) zone so I parked it for a cpl of years . HOWEVER... I recently for the hell of it put some MR 2+1 xl's in it and had such a blast surfing quality reef break over 3 days in the 3-5' range. Im 6'3 105kgs back-foot surfer and as you said I found stepping back on the tail and driving with my weight through the turns with the massive MR fins the most fun I've had on a board in a while. Might have to try the Hypto step up soon...

Hi..Question: Do u think I'll b ok using the Hypto Kripto as a step up board..stretching out the lenght and adding loads of volume? I'm looking at a 2nd hand custom Hypto krypto right now..its a 6'11× 21.5 x 2.75, 45.3 Liters..I'm 5'7" 160lbs.before u laugh at me:) .its because the surf has picked up and the waves tend to roll in slow then jack up and dump a steep lip (wave face 5-10 feet)I'm trying to use a new board with alot of rocker 6'7"x 21.5x 2 3/4 38Liters..but I keep geeting hung up on the lip. I've bee riding my Firewire seaside 5'10 at 39Liter all summer and having a blast but as the waves get steep or hollow I started trying that 6'7 and it trims well..but..the steep drops I lag and get stuck at top. Will I be pulling the HK out of its intended design by stretching out the lenght with my height/weight :/?

I noticed for condition with not enough push the medium hs were better than large due to the natural hold of the round pintail, i think foiled fin add little bit of drag at take off too compared to flat foil like am.
Youdig surf hey! The V2 foil shouldn’t create drag, it’s should actuality do the exact opposite of that and generate speed! Interesting feedback!
@@TheSurfboardGuide yes it does but the lift occuring after some speed if im right, the grip provided by the foil can go both way i think. If you can try a medium set.
Youdig surf I’ve never felt them to drag, only to really generate speed in small waves. There was a time around 10 years ago when they first came out that I struggled to surf with anything but these speed generating foiled fins! I think they were pre Blackstix and they were Vector 2.0’s.
I tried the medium HS fins but they were too small and didn’t gave enough hold for me!
@@TheSurfboardGuide yup, on my mellow beach break wave i can feel the difference , but i might be wrong, tho i use fcs setup, but if you look they still have foil in fcs as cambered or ift, i do like inner foiled fins too that is what i use on my puddle jumper in a quad setup, i like the traction they give on the face of the wave when you pumping and they are really good for small wave.
I have a hypto clone , its the best polyvalent board i ever had everything is like your described business in the back party in the front haha, the hold of the tail on bigger or hollow wave and the medium rail give me a feeling of security even on steep drop. I might retry large hs set as i got both medium and large, maybe im too much used to ride quad or twins =). very good review btw.
Hi... Just wondered on your choice between the Hytpo Krypto and Dhd Black diamond? Is there much difference between the two performance wise? Thanks in advance
Never ridden the Black Diamond, but while the outline looks similar, the dimensions are a little slimmer - and it also looks narrower through the nose than the HK

Is a foam 30.1L equivalent to PU or ff? EVA volume added is assisting floatation or not?
Hey! EPS is slightly floatier, but as an intermediate surfer I wouldn’t be changing sizing or volume due to it.

Yeah it would probably be a good board as it is nice and stable and holds volume under the chest. Don't go too big though, otherwise she won't be able to turn it!

My stats are 5'5" 65 kg, I'm a beginner and typically ride a 6.0" foamy with 48 litres. I'm looking into this board for the winter because for me, the most frustrating thing is being locked in front of the waves because I cant dive my board. So it is very important that I can dive this thing without sacrificing alot of volume. So what do you think? 5'6" HK? Maybe an extra inch or two?
Hey mate - a 48L foamy is a big jump down to a 5'6 HK, are you able to pick a few up and see how they feel under the arm?
At your weight the 5'6 should be fine, but if you're used to 48L you may get a little shock...
@@TheSurfboardGuide ya I have that in mind. I'll take as much volume as i can get without sacrificing the diving ability. I do have a similar board at 6.6"(fun size poly that I also can't quite dive) and that has less volume. Perhaps I'll practice more with that. It's just I do so much better with my foamy so I use that. Right now the wave height is just very well fit for the foamy.

@@joaoramos32 I do have the board, 5'6 HK. though I got it then I decided to stick with the foamie longer because the winter just about ended at that point and the faomie is a good summer board. However, THIS winter I will be needing it cause the foamie will get me locked out.
Im looking to buy another board (lol) as an in between step. Like a 5'10" grovler.
With what little I did use the HK, I did manage to get out back on some difficult days, so thats encouraging.
As far as my surfing, a year later im pretty proficient on the 6' foamie. Working on getting down the line and getting on my feet quicker.
How much smaller do you recommend the board to be compared to ur average short board?

That's a big choice! I really like the Hypto, such a fun board and really hard to go past.
I'd say Hypto if generally surfing waves on the lower end, and Cymatic if you are surfing waves on the higher end...

Paul Saint Raw I don’t think they push water at all - I actually think they surf really really well... but everyone to their own!
That board is way too short for you. Lucky you can even paddle it. 90kg now - wait until you are older. You will be like us at 95kg to 100kg and you'll need more than 40 litres. Mainly because as you get older it gets harder to push into waves - you miss heaps of them and it's frustrating. But then once in and up, you want to be on your usual short board. This is the conundrum.

Dude how much do u weigh? No offense but to ride a 30.7 board you should be extra fit. I think you might be riding the wrong Volume...
Guy Katz hey! I’m 90kgs. I think volume is a personal preference of what the person feels is right for them. Online volume calculators and that are great as a guide, but feels right for the person is probably better... This board paddles onto every wave I want, moves with speed across flat sections, and drives through turns, so I’m not sure what’s wrong with the volume here? It’s also about 1 liter more than my normal shortboards.

volume u need depends on your weight, fitness but also skills and this 30.7 board seems totally fine for him
