    The best thing I like about your show in its down to Earth reality. You do not have to spend $200-$400 for a super steel ADC knife as some would have us believe. We did very well with the cheap affordable knives of the day, they were tough, reliable and easy to sharpen, if you lost one it didn't matter, a new one didn't break the bank.

    Interesting handle materials. I never thought of using circuit boards as covers, but they are a sturdy material (fiberglass) .
    PCB Layers Explained
    Substrate Layer. The substrate layer of any PCB is usually made from fibreglass, which gives the board its rigid form. ...
    Copper Layer. Next is a thin layer of copper foil which is laminated to the board using heat. ...
    Soldermask layer. ...
    Silkscreen layer.

    A great looking knife! In the 70’s my mother designed circuit boards for a living.

    That slim folder with circuit board scales sure would be a great gift for that computer nerd friend who was building his own when the 386 was the hot processor to have.😀

    I believe knives like this one are more durable than one might think. The the handle material is as strong as the blade. I watched knives tested until the blade broke and the handle was still working without damage. Your knife is a cool looking model, I it like for the value of collecting; it is interesting looking and durable. The idea was far ahead of the times. It compares to Gerber LST knives except uses a two-piece construction with a metal spacer. It looks like the lines and numbers are in line with the frame and blade.

    This is really cool, i remember seeing these in an old catalogue long ago.
    There is another knife similar to this made for Beretta in Seki City called the Electra, it has circuit board inlays set in a steel handle.

    Really a shame Camillus went down, this is at least one model i would have bought. Over here it was almost exclusively Case that was sold as American knives. Ofcourse there were different German brands that sold knives here, but nothing that futuristic. Thank you for showing Tobias.

    I often wondered why this kind of scale or cover isn't more common. It's either G10 or FR-4 after all, not GFN/FRN.
    PBX on the board probably stands for private branch exchange, so it was something to do with telephony.

    I think is a classic utilitarian knife, with bone handles from a cyber being, as cool as cattle bone handles. Definitely is a very good idea. Strangely, did not came from victorinox! Think in the ciber tool, or a spartan!

    I missed this back in the day. I would have bought two, one for me and one for my dad. I still enjoy small lockbacks, this is something that I will keep an eye out for. I think it’s a cool idea for handle material, look how thin it is. Does it have much flex to it? Thanks for sharing this one!

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really, not much flex at all, if any. I’m pretty impressed with it!

    Love the PCB, not sure if they are as durable as G10 or FRN. I am an Electronics grad, but didn't work in the component side, so I can't identify what appliance it came from. Pretty cool though. Same as some commenters, my concern would be the lead content in the solder. Can't argue that is was a great idea though. THanks Tobias!

    I think that circuit boad was used in some type of phone. I saw PBX on the board.
    What is PBX?
    Private Branch eXchange
    The term PBX was first applied when switchboard operators ran company switchboards by hand. As automated electromechanical and then electronic switching systems gradually began to replace the manual systems, the terms PABX (private automatic branch exchange) and PMBX (private manual branch exchange) were used to differentiate them. Solid state digital systems were sometimes referred to as EPABXs (electronic private automatic branch exchange). Now, the term PBX is by far the most widely recognized. The acronym is now applied to all types of complex, in-house telephony switching systems, even if they are not private, branches, or exchanging anything.

    • @WilliamsKnifeLife
      @WilliamsKnifeLife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's also a relatively new circuit boad as it uses Surface Mount Technology which became popular in the 80's.

      Cool! Great bit of information there. I’m guessing you were in the field for awhile?

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias I was in Electronic Warfare for 6 years, worked at Harris Corporation for 8 years wiring up microwave cell phone tower transmitters, and 12 years at Intel Corporation making computer chips, so yes I have some experience with circuit boards. 😃It's hard to tell the exact circuit it came out of because you don't see the whole board. Usually a PCB will have the boards name on it to identify where it belongs.

  • @rwillaz
    @rwillaz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am pretty sure that your assumption that the circuit board material is FRN is incorrect. One of the most common materials for circuit boards is FR4, which is a fiberglass reinforced epoxy laminate and is essentially a fire retardant version of G10.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the additional information. I was under the impression that FRN/FRP is a term that is generically used for any number glass reinforced plastics As I was uncertain of which plastic was being used I went broad. A few others have also mentioned FR4. Again, appreciate the clarification.
