Looks like the previous owner was a diy guy. He was probably the one that tinkered with the handles. I mean, you can barely see the joins in that wallpaper for starters 😅
Split spindles work by only allowing the handle to open the door on the inside, from the outside you need the key, means you can leave your house and just close the door/lift the handle to secure it, but you can also easily lock yourself out…this spindle was put in backwards
Up here in the Highlands I've never come across a split spindle. They're not a thing up here!!
