Dan Vávra is one of the most recognizable Czech game developers. His career started at Illusion Softworks and he first worked on Hidden and Dangerous as a 2D artist and then become director and writer on Mafia series. Since 2011 he is a creative director at Warhorse Studios which just released realistic medieval open world RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance - one of the most successful crowdfunded games so far. The game sold one million units in first week.

Dan will speak about our approach to storytelling in open world, how the historical accuracy and realism affects our design choices and about the historic context of our game - how accurate are we actually.
I hope KCD is just the beginning of an amazing franchise. I always wanted a realistic RPG
there will be a theresa dlc that features her as a playable character! and if you actually played through the game, theresa is a really strong woman and was depicted well

I love how Central/Eastern European countries started developing very good games.
It's not really that hard now, with all the garbage released, to make better game.
He was the main guy behind Mafia 1: City of Lost Heaven, so i dont think they "started". Its more like they did not meet a competitor yet :)

I always admired the ambitions of such devs. Very tight on resources and yet they make giant open world games with top tier graphics for the time. Stalker, Metro, Mafia.

Full respect for you Czechs!! We are neighbors. This game learnt me your history. FYI for folks who don't know. The grumpy old man around the 7:00 mark is Sapkowski, the Author of the Witcher books.
Hopefully this will start a new trend of historical accurate games.

KCD is one of the few truly original games that have come out in recent years! I'm playing the game right now and it's definitely one of the most unique and immersive games I've ever played. A breath of fresh air in a sea of AAA mediocrity!

This guy puts AAA games to shame. Best game ever created in this lifetime.
Because it wasn't just a copy paste cashgrab like assassin's creed or something like that. They really worked hard for years to make this.
Felicitations for this beautiful game. As a Frenchman I did not know the history of medieval Bohemia and it fascinated me. We do not know enough about the history of the peoples of Central Europe and that is a pity. But your game can partially repair this error! I hope that other productions from Central European countries will reach us.

I remember years ago hesitating to back the game on kickstarter ... absolutelly worth it . THE MAN THE MITH THE LEGEND DANIEL VAVRA !
I really love this guy. My favorite game designer by far. He is uncompromising when it comes to quality.

Kudos to the crowd for actually getting two great questions in at the end. It would be so typical if someone would end the thing by asking some swang-wang-wang question like ”what inspired you to make this game” or ”What part are you happiest with”.

I can only praise the all insane job done to make the game as accurate as possible. All those chronicles studied and consultation with professional historians who are specialise in the period. And yet there are always morons who think that american "blog historians" are more competent than that :/

Fascinating stuff. Impressive just how much work went into getting the game as accurate as possible. It has driven me to want to learn more about my own country's history. Actually, running concurrently with the time period in this game, in my own country, Owain Glyndwr was in the middle of the Welsh Rebellion against the English. I would love to see a KCD-like game based on that conflict.
I finished this game 2 days ago and I have to say, it's one of my favourite RPGs. For me this is right after Witcher 3

There is a lot of info on Bohemian history and interest in medieval gaming in the English-speaking world. Warhammer Historical even produced a Hussite Wars book. But that's the catch, it's all in English. I don't know about Bohemia, but elsewhere in Europe this period had higher death rates than any other period in history, even World War 2.
one of the best open worlds of all time Kingdom come, RDR2, Witcher 3 and BOTW are hands down the best open world games of the previous generation.

He's honestly just a regular, although very talented, guy who doesn't have patience for SJW bullshit and speaks what's on his mind without much of a filter. It bothers me how many people actively tried to hurt the game's success and didn't like him as a person because of that.

Vávra často hodně přehání. Já si naopak pamatuju kolik lidí se na tu hru těšilo a drželo WH palce, aby to byla dobrá hra. Největší výtky byly jen k chybějícímu českému dabingu.

I love this game, and they did a brilliant job. However, they could have done a lot more work on getting consistent English voice acting. It was very jarring to hear some of the main characters come out with North American accents when most others had British ones. Father Godwin being the worst offender, but also Sir Divish and Robard at the beginning of the game. Anyway, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent game.
People in czechland also have different accent than people from Moravia..so people in the game could also be from different places and therefore have different accents. It is also why people in Skellige speak differently than people in Novigrad in Witcher.
The different accents were surely intentional as they stand for different local accents at the time. Which accent should have been the right one anyway?
There are dozens and dozens of regional dialects for both British and American English. Would have sounded much better if they weren't mixed IMHO.
The reasons are simple - we foreigners cant hear the different accents of english. The second one is they used only native english actors living in czechia, plus a few like Henry from GB.
He spoke about it in another presentation. Dan is aware that different varieties of English sound very distinct to native speakers, even if we Czechs can't really tell the difference. However, he had big difficulties finding actors who fit their roles and also were from the same general area. Add to that having to balance the costs associated with hiring actors, paying for them to travel here and time everything perfectly so you have all the actors you need for each scene present at the right time... all in all, I'm sure they did their best.
