    Wtf ?!?! Why do you compare the same game ?!?
    The cd version was the same as genesis, but on a.....CD.
    Eventually they add a video intro. But its the same.

      - Different Tracks (Music)
      - Different Sound Effects
      - Lacks CO-OP on Sega CD (2 players)
      - Golden Axe is included in a 5-game CD on the Sega CD
      - Golden Axe is included in a 6-game cartridge on the Mega Drive
      - The 6-game cartridge for the Mega Drive contains all the games from the Sega CD
      - The Sega CD disc is missing Sonic 1 from the Mega Drive cartridge
      - The music on the Sega CD doesn't stop when enemies die
      - Along with various other differences involving bugs, difficulty, coloring, collision...
      I compare these 'identical' games to see how many people are able to notice the differences. After all, if they can't notice the differences even when side by side, it's obvious they won't notice them when they're not side by side.
      - Expectation: Games Superior to Cartridge versions
      - Perception: Games Identical to Cartridge versions
      - Reality: Games Inferior to Cartridge versions

    People complain About the Sega CD, but it was a pretty powerful piece of hardware. Batman Returns, The Terminator, and Soul Star showed off the sprite capabilities of the hardware. And I find it hard to believe (I had this when it was released) that the Sega CD couldn't handle a two player mode in Golden Axe. The hardware was more than powerful enough to do it, this was either Sega being stingy with their money. Or just lazy, I can't tell which

  • @ImWithTeamTrinity
    @ImWithTeamTrinity 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    The Sega CD had better sprite abilities than the Genesis, but was not much more powerful. To be fair, CD's were pretty new when the Sega CD released, so it was still pretty cool tech at the time. The problem was the feuding between Sega of Japan and USA, and if they had properly supported the Sega CD for the minimum 5 years expected for a new console and released more good games on it, they would have had a success until the Saturn released. With CD quality audio, FMV capability and massive storage, they could have focused on releasing more high quality RPG's like Lunar and Shinning force, which have always been popular and top sellers, and are games that would take advantage of the Sega CDs strengths that the Genesis lacked. Im pretty sure FF7 would have run on it, I bet there are tons of high quality PS1 RPG's that would run fine on the Sega CD with some tweaks. Its too bad, because they finally got it right with the Dreamcast, but it was too late by then, they had lost their customers confidence. I cant even understand why they would release two versions of a game for two consoles that do not work apart, it makes no sense.

      Sega of Japan supported the Sega CD more than SoA. There is a weird revisionist history that Sega's downfall was on SoJ but other than the Genesis, SoA had alot failures. Especially since SoA was the one who put the emphasis on FMV games like Scottie Pippen Slam City.
      Also it would have been impossible to do ff7 on the Sega CD. It had no polygon capabilities and it's FMV ability was really bad since it relied on software decompression.

    • @iwanttocomplain
      @iwanttocomplain 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BurritoKingdom well their first fumble was calling the console something strange and difficult to pronounce, especially in plural form and an awkward logo that breaks all the spacing rules I learned in logo college and references religion, despite that being absurd for a hugely confusing message. Then it was downhill from there.
      The FMV was really variable in quality. like very very. Tomcat Alley is not too bad.
      NO it doesn't do Polygons. But the 32X-CD could easily run FF7.

  • @SomeOrangeCat

    I don't understand why the co-op was taken out of the Sega-CD version. There's no technical reason for it. This is the same hardware that runs Soul Star, a game that looked sounded and played like something from the early 32-bit console era!

    • @FranMatsusaka

      Maybe there was not enought space in the Mega CD RAM (512Kb) for a second player. Don't forget that in the CD version you need to load the assets from the CD and keep them somewhere, while in cart version you just take everything from the ROM and load it directly to the VRAM when needed.

      @@pam8352 In some places it is said that the Mega CD has 6MB of RAM, but it is really 4MB of main RAM + 2MB of VRAM. Data that is loaded from the CD initially goes to main RAM. The Golden Ax cartridge occupies 4MB, so if you need to add something else, you are already exceeding the established limit. In my opinion, a 2-player Golden Ax is perfectly possible, but I think that at SEGA, when it came to making the port, between having to implement a more optimized resource loading system or removing the second player, they opted for the latter.

      Sega is infamous for its rushed projects, nothing really changes in 3-4 years apart from the CD audio! In the Japanese version of Streets of Rage, if you play 2-player mode, the second player dies as soon as they appear :D while in the US version you can play 2-player. Sega has a history of underutilizing its IPs, always doing the bare minimum with as few megabytes as possible. If they had wanted to, they could have made amazing games on CD and 32X...

    Interesting. So the Genesis 6-Pak is superior the Sega CD's 5-Pak Classics.
    1. 2 player mode must of been two much for the Sega CD. Kind of no excuse.
    2. I assume your Magic demonstration near the end was to show that you can spam and juggle the enemies. Which was funny.
    3. 8:05 (Gen) Player 3 scored higher in strength than player 1. I feel you were playing both characters.
    4. Nice remix of one of the Columns themes for the Sega CD.

      Streets Of Rage on the same disc handles 2 player.
      I would love to hear the story of why Golden Axe CD is 1 player only. There should have been room on the disc for the full game.

    • @FranMatsusaka
      @FranMatsusaka 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Lightblue2222 this is just my assumption, but it is likely a RAM issue. In a cartridge you have all assets accessible from the ROM, but in a CD machine you have to load it to the RAM. If your game is smaller than the machine RAM you just need an initial load, but if your game is bigger, you need to load necesary assets on each screen/stage. My guess is that Golden Axe was slightly bigger than Sega CD RAM, so they need to implement multi load system. But probably enemy and stage tileset wasn't very well ordered in the original cartridge to load them in a CD version easily. Reorganization of tileset and reindexing sprites could take a lot of time in this hypothetical case, and removing a second player (and all its assets in RAM) could be a faster solution in a short development time circumstance.

      @FranMatsusaka that's the most detailed possible reason I've heard yet. Thanks
      I wonder if they had just ditched the newly added sound samples and just used the original rom if it would have helped fit 2 player mode.

    The arcade music in the CD version is nice, but the new voice samples are as bad as "Bleh!' from GA2. Then you don't get the 2 player feature, which is in the Genesis version. Sega could have redone the backgrounds to be more like the arcade, with 6 Mbits RAM (768 KB) available. No... it looks identical to the 4 Mbit cart. Highly disappointing.

    Sega CD was such a waste. The secondary 68000 was not used to its extent. Scaling not used much even though provided the necessary chips.
    Kept the same shitty color palette as the Genesis and the 1x speed to CD readings completed the failure package.
    The SegaCD should bring a whole System16 hardware to refresh the Genesis experience and failed to so so.
