- Hold It (U.S., 1938)
Director: Dave Fleischer.
Fleischer Studios had multiple “full color” projects under its belt (including a two-reel Popeye special) by the time work started on 1938’s Hold It, which presents a cozy bouquet of teal, lavender and caramel across its cool nighttime palette. The plot follows a scratchy-voiced feline crooner’s performance of the title song for an audience of neighborhood cats. The accompanying action includes a full order of Fleischer-style surrealism and anarchy: hyper-fluid kitty choreography gives way to a neighborhood dog chase, while the song’s refrain (“Hold it!”) generates a series of memorable, gravity-defying gags.-Russell Zych

At first I was thinking "Wow this opening shot is so well animated" then I realized its a miniature set piece being spun around.
that's what the Fleishers studios were famous for from aprox. 1935-1940ish of some titles .
@@toonrog9957 Im familiar with the technique, the colors just managed to fool me for a bit.
@@Anonymouthful thats tenicolor that improved from roughfly 1931-1937ish.....and then took and big leap in color improvement in 1967
Thst shot is still amazing.
Batman Beyond utilized that same technique in a section of the intro
I like that the dog abided by the rules of the game too.
and the violin, and the apples, and the water 😂
All of creation must bow its knee
The cat is the original stand of the world. XD
I love how all the laws of physics freeze on the hold it, _except_ the TNT stick
4:43 Ah, look at these nice thick outlines. It had been so long since the old days when all of Fleischer's cartoons had this wonderfully unique look
What a night-and-date upgrade from the muddy and discolored TV print, like this doesn't even seem REAL!!!
You could call this a Technicolor Dream!!!
The U.M.& M./NTA TV prints were duped in Eastmancolor- and still look *crummy* after almost 60 years.
Technicolor was extremely expensive but boy did it put everyone else to shame!
That's why Max Fleischer continued to film the body of his cartoons in black and white until he was forced out of his own studio in January 1942. Famous Studios- Paramount's successor to Fleischer Studios- continued to film the Popeye series in monochrome until 1943, when they introduced an "all-Technicolor" production schedule.
Exactly! This cartoon looks like it was made TODAY.
Wow! This is the best I’ve ever seen a Color Classics cartoon look! Really great job! I know a lot of people have been waiting to see these restored for a long time.
I'm not sure how they predicted in 1938 what my front yard would look like while feeding the neighborhood strays in 2024 but there it is!
Comedian Freddy Lewis used to perform the "Hold It" song like that black cat during his tour of Waxahachie back in '82.
7:19 The cat must have explosive proof armor 😂😂
I love watching classic cartoons, as they are more beautiful than modern ones
Although watching this in its original format would’ve been interesting, I’m glad we live in a time period where material that was made almost a century ago can be digitally remastered.
This is a stunning restoration -- and a hilarious Fleischer Bros cartoon I've never seen! Thank you
I used to have the Betty Boop collection on VHS, but I never realized how detailed those rotating sets were.
I used to have a bunch of DVDs containing cartoon classics back in the mid 2000s
The Fleischer brothers innovated that process and some great examples can be seen in the Popeye two-reelers "Sinbad the Sailor" and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves "
@@kenttm42 exactly!!
It’s so clean I thought it was a modern cartoon
How blessed are we to be able to watch those treasures in this quality! Thank you very much for sharing your restoration with us!
i just love seeing cats tease dogs. Observing cats over many years, they really will go to this much trouble to annoy a dog! I admire the way the cartoonists capture this in an (slightly) exaggerated way.
I love the other way around
That looks absolutely mint! Please give this treatment to the other Color Classics and Talkartoons.
Yes, stay tooned to our channel for more restored Fleischer cartoons ❤
@@FleischerToonsLook forward to seeing more restorations from you guys.
@@FleischerToons Were you involved in this one? Your organization is not mentioned anywhere within the opening
@@allanbob8579I assume they weren’t.
The first half of this short (right before the song) plays like an early Talkartoon with inanimate gags like the cellar doors that open and close every which way.
Holy cow, Technicolor it is. Nicely done.
🎶But when I say "hold it!", everybody HOLD!🎶
*hold*
I like the implication that the cats somehow have the power to control the laws of time, space and physics
Before Cats the Musical became an international sensation…
Spectacular. It's like seeing it for the first time. Thank you for sharing this beautiful restoration.
Some of us literally are seeing it for the first time.
I have two cats and they enjoy being outside all the time. They stay outside my room when it rains
I have been watching, loving, and studying cartoons and toon history for 60 years. What a delight to find an old classic toon I've never seen before ! Great treat!
I hate the term "toon." But, of course, that's not your concern.
This looks and sounds incredible
It looks fantastic on my HD TV, but the crystal-clear freaky ending will probably give me nightmares tonight. 😂
😈 Classic!
Very nice! I’m impressed with the restoration work on this cartoon.
Well when the cat started talking I couldn't handle much more
The screen is way brighter than I remember. Last time I saw it was during the 90’s 📺
6:57 Predicted Catdog 😂
Since Paramount via Nickelodeon produced this show.
Wow! This restoration is incredible! The sound quality is amazing and even the picture and color stay very true to the original animation cels. Great job to the restoration team behind this one!
And even the cartoon itself, I must say, it's surprisingly very good! Probably one of the funniest 30s cartoons I've seen in a long time, with a strong sense of comedic timing and creative usage of gravity. I can imagine the Looney Tunes creators like Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng took a lot of inspiration from cartoons like this.
This is so cute and very well remastered.🎶🐱
Crazy how this video is only one year older than my grandpa
amazing. never before seen it. beautiful colours. thanks!
What clear the picture is and how crisp the sound is! Great job! I applaud you 👏 !
Originally released in April 1938.
Jack "Popeye" Mercer provides several of the cats' voices.
It's being beautifully either remastered or preserved in some way it is just crystal clear thank you for putting this up.
We need more Fleischer restorations from you guys! You’re doing so well, keep it up!
This is amazing! I remember seeing this on TV as a kid back in the early 1960s in LA… in black and white of course on our little TV with a yellowish tint and bad sound. This is a fantastic job. Thank you.
I remember seeing this cartoon several times when I was a little kid. I'm grateful to ASIFA-Hollywood for the restoration. I think of all the cartoon studios, I liked (and still like!) Max Fleischer and Warner Bros. the best.
I love this classic animation my pops showed me this ❤
Excellent restoration. MORE.
HOLD IT!
Vaya que genial y Classico de lo mejor de la animación Paramount de los años 30 pero bueno ademas mucha gente lo recuerdan aún mas hasta ahora
I never seen an old cartoon that looks insanely good for 1938
this is how cartoons were supposed to look inna theaters, when first released, but the lesser vhs tape over companies inna 80s-thru say the early 2000's copied from lousy drive in or tv lesser standard 16mm or 35 mm film stock that was from home bought and not from the archive studio prints is the diff.
It's a question how many negatives survive, or what sort of shape they're in.
Heck yeah Fleischer!!
Aw hell yeah. Thank you ASIFA-Hollywood & UCLA Film & Television Archive !
This looks amazing. Congrats to the restorers. I hope they can do some of their great black and white cartoons.
If only we can get this Crisp of a Restore for Popeye
Amazing restoration!
Well folks, there you have it. Cartoon kitties control the flow of time. The more you know 😸👍
UCLA, could you post the newly restored Terrytoons cartoon FRENCH FRIED ('30)?
I love those Disney/Warner/Fleischer classic toons because they are full of unrealistic gags. This should be the sense of cartoons even today.
This is when I think to cartoons, not Marvel, anime, Disney princesses or the Simpsons
7:35. My cats on catnip😆.
Max Fleischer was a genius.
This restoration shows how Fleisher cartoons were fundamentally fleisher even when they were imitating Disney.
Lol, I used to love watching these on TNT.
A very good restoration, complete with opening and closing credits. The Fleischer Studio rivaled Disney for their quality of animation. What happened to them later is a shame.
Great pioneers, not very good businessmen.
Moral of this cartoon: Only one MEOW can stop all.
The restoration is off the planet!!
This animation was made a year before the classical movie, "Gone With The Wind." (1939) 😊
don't mean to be rude, but what is your point, ??..because frankly my dear, we don't give a.....[ heh, parafrasing, he said]
so this is what cats do at night
Oh I remember watching this on TV as a kid 😂
It seems unreal to be seeing an old film that doesn't weave back and forth in the frame.
Veawing back and forth in the frame - that was old TH-cam setting that by default had video stabilization ON. It was intended for handheld videos being uploaded. When people uploaded the films and cartoons, the stabilization wasnt turned off - resulting in ruined videos.
This is so funny while stoned. 😂
Amazing restoration!
If I may ask, do you have Irish Stew (Paul Terry, 1930) in your archives? I saw the cartoon in a filmography and it's been driving me crazy since. Thanks, and keep up the good work!
UCLA Film & TV Archive's online catalog shows that they have a 35mm nitrate fine grain master positive of Irish Stew in their collection, but I can't tell if they have an access copy available for on-site viewing. If you are a researcher you could contact them directly and they may be able to scan it for you to view on-site in Los Angeles.
Cats orchestrating on real time? If Popeye made on Cartoon Network back in the day, this short should've held up too. But in all honest, you know those Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fans will be coming for this.
Oooh! This is a lovely short! Cat vs dog cartoons are always my favorite!
Sincerely wonder if any doggie has been traumatized by watching it
I know these classic cartoons short films will never public domain at some point.
I know this might be off topic, but there have been rumors that ya’ll might have prints containing the original titles for “Ain’t We Got Fun” (1937), “The Sneezing Weasel” (1938), “You’re an Education” (1938; with its scenes that were cut from the Blue Ribbon reissue intact), “Duck Soup to Nuts” (1944), and “Daffy Doodles” (1946). If you do indeed have them, could you please upload the titles for those cartoons on here? (again, JUST the titles and in “You’re an Education”’s case, the titles AND the footage cut in the reissue).
Absolutely stunning restoration!🐱
Large Dog (Abnormal Strength) Vs Cats (Superhuman Strength) 💪👑🖤🧡💜💗🟧🟪🈳️🟠🟣♀️👹😈🇺🇲🇯🇵
Requested: The Little Strangers (1936) Restored
The animation in the ending looks like a 1930-s shitpost
This is so much better than the "Cats" movie 😹!
This film technique is called rotoscope which gave animated films a type of 3d effect. Kind of like the viewmaster you see a still image but drawn in a way that every image was on a different level.
The stereoptical process is used also in a couple of Popeye cartoons on TH-cam; Popeye Meets Ali Baba and Popeye Meets Sinbad the Sailor.
Beautiful quality.
This a horror film now that I think about it.
Thank you.
Who let the Cat's out!!
Great job with the restoration. Looks much better than the PD print.
Beautiful restoration of a true Fleischer classic.
I remember watching this on Cartoon Network
Que loucura!
Fabulous!
This restoration looks amazing.
Fantastic!
It's great that people took the effort to restore this animation but adding that watermark really downplays the whole thing.
I know this archive worked to restore this but if you make it publicly accessible you shouldn't put a constant watermark on the video.
Do it either before, after or both. Not during the actual video.
1938: Throw the cat out at night.
2024: Take the cat in.
Cat: everybody hold!
Me: No!
6:25 - This is my first time seeing Scooby Doo getting harassed by cats.
Wonderfull. Very funny. The músic is the Best. Great job. Congratulations.
Wow. They sure were smoking a LOT of weed back in those days! 😸
Wow. Nice restoration.👍
Amo esses desenhos antigos. Animação incrível.
Holy cow so crisp
this is good but i feel bad 4 the dog lol
