Yes! "They determine the box". They constantly redefined what rock music could be. They weren't the only ones, but definitely the most "consistently" diverse
When played live the piano section would be extended to 20+ mins and it could go anywhere, Classical Blues Jazz, wherever JPJ'S hands led him. Then the jam would begin with Bonzo and then Jimmy all going for it!! Incredible .... and different every performance.

You hit the nail on the head when you said they are outside the box. Knew you'd like this but just wait until you see it live at MSG. Hope you feel better tomorrow
Haven't listened to this song in ages, thanks for the reminder of how wonderful it is. Drove past Bonzo's resting place this morning too, need to stop by and pay my respects sometime soon.

what was it like? it was a ritual for the fifth time you immediately buy the new led z album and take it home digesting it all at once many many times and i marveled at the changes and greatgrowth BUT when i saw them do it live in jan of 1975 in Indianapolis it was a jaw dropping epiphany my first zep show! the no quarter went way way off into a huge piano solo by jpj and the long jam page went crazy we did not know the live was so different and incredible !! they did 4 songs from the next album no had heard because it was not released until later that year how cool!!1 am i lucky or what?!
*Morning Bro* ! As I said at the beginning, this album is VERY diverse in style and full of surprises.! I really enjoy your reactions to the mighty Zeppelin. Hope you feel better soon. Check out their live performance of No Quarter at MSG in 1973. JPJ really shows why he's Zeppelin's secret sauce.
Woo-Hoo! For me, the best song on that album, it gave us shivers when we first heard it way back in 1973 and for many years made Houses of the Holy a must listen to regularly album. They greatly expanded this song in concert with John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page getting lengthy solos. Try the live version from MSG 1973, it is amazing! You can find other live versions on-line that are over 20 minutes long. Thanks again and Enjoy! Zep rules. 🎸
There were bands like Pink Floyd around that time that also had a very experimental approach to music. Zep was always interested in doing their own thing.
Armies, or sailors in the navy, would stipulate, “No quarter given, no quarter taken.” Your quarters on a ship were your accommodations including your food rations. Saying no quarter in war meant that they were taking no prisoners and they did not expect to be spared. They intended to fight to the death and were going to put you to death if you were captured after the battle.
Enjoying the channel. I like the back and forth between album cut and live versions that you occasionally do. It’s the most interesting way to experience their intent with studio recordings, and their abilities to stretch live and display creativity in the moment. Wishing you a short stay, on the mend. Regards
There is a band called Dread Zeppelin that does reggae style renditions of Led Zeppelin songs. One of their studio albums is called: No Quarter Pounder
Zep's ventures into different styles highlights their masterful musicianship. A side effect of this genre-hopping is it inspired me to check out other music. 'Hmm let me check out some blues, reggae, funk psychedelic. And after hearing some of Zep's inspirations my admiration of them grew even more hearing where they took those styles
Cut a long story short, if you can get beyond your mind through whatever means, Led Zeppelin are a light in the darkness. This song and Babe Im gonna Leave you taught me all I ever needed to know. They know what they are doing beyond mind. You can't do what they do and be a normal human being, they are something else.
Definitely do the live version from "The Song Remains the Same" movie, it is also a trip. The Ocean is a straight ahead rocker. Keep in mind that the ocean refers to the seas of humanity they played to every night. It's a strong finish to a groundbreaking album. Then comes Physical Graffiti: the pinnacle of their creativity.
Robert used his voice as another instrument…….he always makes a joke of it, saying that if he didn’t he would have been just standing around allot because of all the extended solos “you could have taken a course in Serbo-Croat” at the side of the stage during some of those solos, he quipped in one interview. But he did create with his voice another layer to the mix, and this song is a perfect example.
Zep. isn’t the only bland that I think is great, but the are the GOATS OF GOATS. 😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Dude...live, especially this one. You’re missing the mark!
Sal, allot of younger reactors don’t know what “No Quarter” means. Forgive me if you do, but in case you don’t, it means “no mercy given in battle….no prisoners will be taken…fight to the death. In some concerts, , JPJ could go off into extended jazz and classically influenced piano solos…Great musician.
If you become a fan of Led Zep live performances and research ALL of their live shows, you'll find that this song had the widest variety of live versions....Jones and Page would take the middle section into completely different places from one night to the next. The 1973 MSG version is certainly great, but far from the longest or most elaborate version. A great studio version, but one of several from their catalog that was almost always greater live. Get well soon.
This is full of Robert's mythical, mystical lyrics. The "winds of Thor" are not about Thor, the Norse god but the mountain range in Canada. This would become Jonesy's showpiece and could often last 20 minutes or more. The live would have the bits of jazz rock, classical, and anything else Mr. Jones cared to throw into it - occasionally, including a bit of Nut Rocker - a crazy, sped-up version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet originated by American instrumental ensemble B. Bumble and the Stingers. For a live version, DO NOT use the one from MSG because it's not Jonesy's full filmed performance. In the film, this was Jonesy's "fantasy", but the online links has bits and pieces of other parts of the film edited together - it makes no sense. Here's a link for the performance from Earls Court. th-cam.com/video/mGthaP2BVUI/w-d-xo.html
You need to react to a live performance of this song. I recommend earls court 1975 or even celebration day 2007. It will knock your socks off. Personally I find it to be their best song live!
Oh yeah….live at MSG is a must watch! It does have JPJ’s fantasy sequence in it….personally I’d rather just watch them play, but I know why the fantasy sequences are there, so…..By the way, there’s is NOTHING bluesy about this song…..I don’t know how some of those sites can acatagiruze it as such…..they’re just throwing genre names around. This is totally psychedelic, with lyrics by Robert based on folklore and myth…….”The Winds of Thor”.
When listening to the live version from The Song Remains the Same, do yourself a huge favor and listen to it from an original version of the live album. The remastered stuff was edited to try and fit the movie version. The original soundtrack version is the best. Then you can go ahead and watch it from the movie. I'm pretty sure all of the other older Led heads will agree
Aaaaah. I just found a version where someon edited the original release version with the newer remastered version. Listen to this : th-cam.com/video/Y-qFipbA4Cw/w-d-xo.html
Next try When the Levee Breaks - it changed the game on how drums were recorded forever. You can see a clip of Jimmy Page showing the house/manor that it was recorded in by searching "It might get loud" documentary with JP, Jack White and The Edge from U2. It also is a true story cover song about the 1927 Mississippi flood and screams the blues while Robert plays a mean Harmonica!
He’s done it already…..he’s going through their catalogue in order. If you’re a first time visitor, you have four albums worth if reactions to enjoy already.
One of my all time favorite Zeppelin songs. A friend directed me to the cover by Tool once. While I felt they did everything else well, vocally it was a disappointment. Plant is just too much a tough act to follow.
