Clouds Are Again Gathering - Elder Ephraim of Arizona

  • This excerpt is from “A Call From the Holy Mountain” by Elder Ephraim of Arizona (+2019) written in 1974 and published in English in 1991. These words may be difficult to hear yet they are written by the greatest missionary to America of our times. Let us stand firm on the teachings of our holy Elder Ephraim lest we fall away from the narrow path.

    _______
    Elder Ephraim writes:
We feel no animosity against any men because of their heresy or their faithlessness, but we shall never come to love faithlessness or heresy for the sake of men, because if we do we shall be alienated from God.
At present we are praying all the more fervently, for clouds are again gathering on the horizon of Fanari (i.e. Ecumenical Patriarchate) and we do not know what the weather will be like tomorrow.
It is well known that the devil-instigated Zionism is coordinating two insidious operations both within and without the Church aspiring to one and the same end: to destroy the fortress known as Orthodoxy.
Papists, Protestants, Jehovah Witnesses, Freemasons, Unionists, Ecumenists and any other "root of bitterness" -- all these have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast....
We believe that Orthodoxy has no place among this conglomeration of errors and heresies. This insidious "ecumenical fabrication does not wish to seek out the truth but," according to Father Haralambos Vasilopoulos, "is a mixture aimed at exterminating the Truth. It is an effort not for those that have been deceived to find the truth but for those that do have it and lose it; that is, those who believe in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church."

A note regarding the authenticity of the text:
I, Timothy Honeycutt, spoke with a man who knew Elder Ephraim and many close to him, including the publisher himself. He also mentioned that he has seen in Greek many sections of this text and that the publisher of the English edition is adamant that the “controversial” section on ecumenism is authentic and from the Elder. This section has also been published by the respected “Orthodox Kypseli”. Furthermore, this was published 28 years before the Elder’s repose and only recently has he heard rumors that this text is not from the Elder. I think it would be rather strange if over 28 years the truth of the text, if the truth is what you mentioned some have said, was not confirmed and clarified. I cannot vouch for the entire text, though I have no real reason to doubt it, and large sections of it have appeared in Greek from a very respected publisher, including those most "controversial" parts.

It certainly does feel that way. I was at my Orthodox Church today for the Divine Liturgy. It being the first Sunday of Lent we celebrated the restoration of the icons and made a procession outside the church holding our icons. As soon as we stepped outside of the church as a congregation, the contrast between us as the Church and the outside world was jarringly evident. Most people took no notice of us, or peered with mild curiosity. From their perspective we probably looked like religious nuts or something. After the service was over I left and drove home. While driving I became painfully aware of how madly the whole world was rushing around, how distracted and disconnected they all were. How much the world around us is a drab concrete and asphalt mess. Gone is any innocence or goodness in human nature. Two years ago life as we knew it was decimated by COVID. Israel is currently in the process of bombing Gaza to smithereens, with no end in sight. The US is a basket case. It’s hard to see any way out of this.

The "controversial" parts should not surprise anyone. This has always been the mindset and teaching coming from Mount Athos. People are too lukewarm today and want to hear "nice things" to make them feel better.

I had a dream on May 2nd 2021 that a bunch of people were going into churches and walking accross the streets which some came on horseback. They seemed to be from different Christian faiths I saw some including Amish on horseback. They were carrying a cross interleaved like a basket. They seemed to be celebrating an Easter service.
My question would be if a Protestant denomination wanted to enter in Communion with the Orthodox Church and were to agree with Orthodox doctrine?Would there be any kind of economia in regards to liturgy? Would it be possible to baptise a Protestant denomination into the Orthodox Church?

Lex orandi lex credendi est. Protestants by and large don’t have anything Orthodox recognize as worship. There have been whole parishes and even groups of them who have become Orthodox, by chrismation of each person in them and the wholesale adoption of normal worship. They’ve stayed and prospered as churches. There is no way to become Orthodox without liturgical worship.

Yes, it should be possible. It would be no different than any person or group of people who want to accept Orthodoxy and be baptised into the Orthodox faith. Pretty sure there have been instances of entire congregations being baptised into Orthodoxy.

This a important question, but it seems many saints of our day have discerned this is not the time for non-commemoration. If many of the clergy and faithful together began to non-commemorate, I think there would be a case made for such a move, as the quantity of people would make a greater impact and do more to lead to healing the Church from impact of the heretical teachings of some of Her members. But one or two who begin to non-commemorate doesn’t seem to bring the healing canon 15 is designed to encourage. We need to discern the times, follow the saints, and trust our fathers in the faith.

    • @OrthodoxWisdom

@vasiliossmith2616 is this is Athonite Hieromonk who was recently in Australia telling the faithful not to attend any parishes in communion with the local Churches around the world (i.e. Greek EP, ROCOR, Serbian, etc)? Telling them only to commune at a few parishes in Greece? If so, my understanding is that he is not necessarily strictly following the canons because canon 15 does not require a priest to cease commemoration let alone cut communion. Canon 15 guards the priest who ceases commemoration of his own bishop if his bishop preaches heresy, but doesn’t require the priest to cease commemoration. Ceasing commemoration, even if commendable on one level, may not bear the desired fruit. It’s an extremely important decision for a priest to make. Additionally, cutting communion with all the local Churches is not what the saints of our day have done and I do not support such a move.

I am as critical of the Phanar as anyone but gerondism is not the way. You merely engage circular thinking without even taking the historical Roman Catholic Church into consideration on its own terms as a valid expression of traditional Christianity. Retreating as you do to tautology of ‘expert opinion’, the gerondism that is a decadent modern trend you betray the wholeness of the church, not exemplified in soi-disant spiritual experts but in the collaboration of all the faithful laity with clergy and monastics. Placing the latter on a pedestal is wrong-headed and results in twisted rigorism and the death of intellect. Peter Heers exemplifies this pernicious trend.

And the Roman Catholics are NOT heretics, they are in schism. There is a difference. Heresy is choice to believe untruth contrary to dogma.
