It's nice to see you teaching them to use a knife, rather than to fear them.
      Well done.
I've had and used knives since childhood and still have all my fingers, plus I've never killed anyone with them (I know, I must be the exception to the rule according to the "nanny State").
It's like ANY tool in the hands of the uninformed or malicious can be dangerous, not just knives.

@@nigelnightmare4160I got my first multitool when I was about 8, 65 years ago. It was a 4 tool Imperial or KampKing with a blade, awl, bottle opener/screwdriver, and a can opener. That and a small whetstone rode in my pocket throughout my school years. My parents gave me a Tinker when I was 20, so I have carried a SAK for 53 years now. I have carried a Craftsman for 38 years, but just upgraded to a Champion (which I regret is no longer offered). I found it used, and I prefer it because it doesn't have the pliers which just add thickness. My Leatherman Wave is always in a pouch on my belt. My SAK is getting a Firefly fire starter and Helix tinder. The Wave got a Volty DC voltmeter in place of the reversible screwdriver bit.

Before you put your scales on you can fit an 11mm x 0.5mm magnet under the victorinox logo. Handy so you don't lose small screws, sewing needles, fishing hooks etc when you put them down. You can attach your 6mm or 3mm magnets to it whilst using your can opener or hook so you don't lose them either. You can attach your 6mm to it and use it to keep larger screws and nails etc in one place so you don't lose them too. It's niche but handy.

Cool idea! I like carry magnets for picking things up. They are very useful if you drop a small screw (or the SAK needle) on a surface where its hard to see it like on a dark floor, a rug or in the grass. This happens to me alot. I really like the idea of temporarily magnetising the SAK itself. It will not attract metal dust in the long run but it will still help with screws. If you have two small but strong magnets you can use them as an emergency button to keep your shirt or jacket shut. You can also use it to disable your wifes credit card ;)

    Hi Felix!
I knew the trick with the needle just rubbing the tip with a cloth to magnetize it, but with a magnet is much better.
Another tip with the needle, to avoid sinking it in the water, just add some grease on it or wax or even you can use ear wax to repel water from the needle.
    Peace!

    • @joeth431
      @joeth431 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I doubt that its possible to magnetize a needle by rubbing it on cloth. If you rub a needle on cloth you may get an electrostatic charge, but that doesnt mean its magnetized. To magnetize it you need a constant magnetic field, you can get this using a permanent magnet or a current moving in the right direction. In theory you may get a current while the electrostatic charge is building up, but this effect negates it self because of the symmetry, even If it would be strong enough, wich i highly doubt in the first place.

I have a small magnet with a hole in the center. I harvested it in my defective headset and you can attach a string to it and can be used to grab metal in hard to reach places like for example when you accidentally drop your jewelry in a tight hole.
Another is you can hack some of the chinese made electronic padlocks with a magnet by putting the magnet on the padlock's solenoid and once you find the correct spot, the sensor will activate and the lock will be open

If you have a SAK huntsman lite or whatever SAK with an inline phillips, where the phillips is in the top layer of tools....it has a massive space under the tool when closed. I wrap two button cell batteries in tape and fit them under there for the lite on the knife. Probably can store thread, magnets, small needles, etc under there.

Ok. I bought 6x2, 3x2, and 8x1 magnets. Everything fits where you said it would. But. The 3x2 is so tiny that it isn't too useful and tends to twist in the crook of the hook, the 6x2 and the two 8x1 magnets grab onto the scissors (or pliers) when the can opener (6x2) or cap lifter (two 8x1) is closing, so I have to open the scissors or pliers before I can close the cap lifter or can opener with the magnets installed. And when I open the scissors or pliers, the magnet tend to stick to them. I'm using a Climber and a Deluxe Tinker. However, two 8x1 magnets do stick flat to the bottom of both knives, behind the hook. The magnets are reasonably strong to stay there when I take the knives out of their pouches and put them back. Time will tell if they do stay there. And they don't interfere with any tool, except for occasionally grabbing on to the bottom of the hook when I open it. Thanks for all you do, I really enjoy your videos!

Good idea to carry the magnets.
If you do this be careful to keep the knife away from your actual compass.
Otherwise you could cause a deviation to your azimuth.
Leaving a compass next to a magnet for an extended period of time can change the direction it points. It might not be magnetic north anymore.
Word to the wise. The magnetic north pole is always shifting. Maps have a magnetic deviation to transfer azimuths from the map to the compass and vice versa. Most maps are old or based off of older information. Older maps might give an deviation that is not correct. Before hiking using a map check that the information is up to date.

If you have TWO magnets, you can attach two non-magnetic objects together (like if you need to leave a paper note on fabric tent, etc) by simply sandwiching them between the two magnets. Now you know you have places to store THREE magnets in your Swiss army knife!
