Arncliffe, which takes its name from the Norse for Eagles Cliff, is located close to where the Cowside beck runs into River Skirfare.
The village was actually the original setting for the fictional village of Beckindale in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm, from its inception in 1972 until moving to Esholt. Some scenes for the 2020 TV series All Creatures Great and Small were filmed in Arncliffe. The village pub, The Falcon Inn, has appeared in both shows.
The village is the largest of four settlements in the Littondale valley, a small valley beside Upper Wharfedale. The cottages on its north-western side face out towards the beautiful limestone scars on the hills beyond the Little Wood.
The River Skirfare has clear water and is filled with brown trout, but is regarded as one of the most challenging fishing areas in the whole of the Yorkshire Dales.
The church of St. Oswald was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries and likely replaced a wooden Saxon place of worship. It was regularly visited by the novelist, poet and Church of England priest Charles Kingsley during the Victorian era and it is widely believed that the village provided him with the inspiration for his famous 1873 children’s story The Water Babies.

jamie what a beautiful place Littondale so picturesque was that small school was so sweet if it was what ashame it started to rain for you on your walk hope you didnt get to wet its a first time its rained for you , the stocks looked very old The grave stones looked very old with all the green moss on them the inside of the church was so amazing and stunning built out of cobbles inside to a difference outside the stream is lovely and clear those strange shaped headstones were very strange wonder why they were like that the village is absolutely perfect in every way the yorkshire dales are stunning we have some super places here in yourkshire what a lovely dry stone wall covered in moss jamie yet another amazing video 😊

Esta vila é lindissima , a mim encanta-me a arquitetura das casas , a igreja é um templo digno de ser observado e estudado nos seus pormenores , nao esquecendo, porém o pormenor das campas adjacentes ou circundantes em que as cruzes são bem destacáveis, E as árvores enormes!
