The Fanmail album was ahead of its time on so many levels! The production was 🔥🔥. Many people probably don’t know that it was the first album by a female group in music history to “debut” at #1 (spent 5 weeks at the top), was the only album in the ‘99 calendar year with two #1 songs, was the biggest selling r&b album of ‘99, and had the second most Grammy nominations than artists of all genres at the 2000 Grammy’s. It’s def a classic and “I’m Good at Being Bad” still goes hard!
For anyone interested, these are T-Boz EXACT words from a Billboard interview about working on this song… T-Boz: So I wrote the song with Jimmy Jam in Minneapolis, and he works so fast. He said, “Just go to the booth. I’m gonna play the beat. Whatever comes to your mind, just hum it.” I had never written like that before. Usually you listened to the beat, you sit down and you write it. But that technique really helped me grown as a writer. So I got out the booth then we wrote the lyrics to it. I loved the way Kurt Cobain used to go soft and then hard, like on “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” So I told Jimmy we could be like Nirvana, just sing really pretty and then go into “I need a crump type n-a!” I actually wanted Lisa to do that first rap part, but she thought I sounded good because my voice was thicker. So they keep me on it until she did the final rap verse.
I was WAITING for his reaction to the switch up 🤣😂😂 Man, Jack can do a whole series of reactions JUST to TLC skits they used to put on their albums LOL!
I never heard TLC like that before either, but it was a hassle at the same time. I got a song for you to react to. TLC - this is how it works. Do a reaction for that song.
This song was inspired by Janet Jackson’s VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards from the performance which got the biggest applause that night. TLC went to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to make something similar. That Janet Vogue fashion video is her best live performance
Lol!!!! It wasnt inspired by the performance. It was inspired by the song. The song is called “What About,” its on “The Velvet Rope.” Tionne loved the structure of that song. So she asked Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis if they could make TLC something similar.
Jack, as a whole, the FanMail album is damn near flawless. You gotta listen to the whole thing on your own time. So many gems. Dallas Austin was in his bag. "I'm Good at Being Bad" was released as a promo single when "No Scrubs" was distributed to radio. The song peaked at #38 and spent 18 weeks on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart despite not being commercially released.
This is, along with the whole “Fan Mail” album was inspired by Janet’s “The Velvet Rope” album. This song, took a page from Janet’s song called, “What About.” Tionne loved the structure of the song. So when it was time to work with Jimmy n Terry, she asked them to make her something similar.
This is from their third album fanmail (1999) released five years after their album crazysexycool (1994) due to them have to file chapter 11 or 7 when they didn't recieved any money they deserved and they have to fire pebbles as manager that same year she divorced L.A reid somebody please correct if I'm wrong
The chorus' beat samples "Slippin into Darkness" by War. TLC was forced to edit this song. Before it goes back to the verses, t-boz of tlc sang "i love to love ya, baby" for 20 seconds, quoting a donna summer song. But donna summer didn't like their use of b, ho, n, cum so they were forced to remove it. Donna Summer didn't like it when people would use her music and cuss. Donna Summer has a song called "bad girls". The first Verse of Lil' Kim's "no matter what they say" was originally recorded on a rap version of "bad girls" with Lil Kim and Rupaul but donna summer refused to clear the sample because lil kim cussed. Donna summer approved TLC's song interpolation of "Love to love you baby" before hearing the final product. Then when she heard it and wasn't pleased, tlc edited it out
@@janamalene0129 I keep all of my cds. My vinyl record copy has the part. I only buy digital/stream if it's the only option. I have stuff on CD that isn't even on streaming My first CD copy did not because I didn't buy the album when it first came out. I didn't get it until like a year after it came out. I have the Japan Cd with the bonus track "U In me" but without the Donna Summer Part. BUT I own a cd copy that has it now. I found a copy at a local music store last year for $5. I also own a portable CD player. The owner was nice enough to let me play the cd on my portable cd player to check it before buying. I have that version on my phone as well, ripped from it.
oh, I just checked my Day 1 european release I bought back in the day and in fact I have the "love to love you baby" verse. Sounded so strange without it 😅
It’s 2 songs from CrazySexyCool I think are phenomenal 1 called “Take our time” which Chilli leads on and the other “Let’s do it again” which T-Boz leads both are out of this world and them girls was sangingggggg
The original version of this song samples "Love to Love You Baby" by Donna Summers. From what I hear she took away the clearance since she didn't like the vulgarity of the song, so you have the version you're listening to now. I still have the original version. This is the full version of the song. th-cam.com/video/A8wCm34vWGw/w-d-xo.html
Yes, it 100% was T-Boz idea, Jack 🤣 she was inspired by Janet Jackson's "What About" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The delivery of those songs.

@@TheSensationalOne I know that. I mean the general song TBoz wrote. We all know Left Eye writes her own parts. If you look up the song credits. She’s always a song writer on sis ha she raps on
Yeah wzup jack man long time now when are you going to do 2pac thugz mansion ft Anthony Hamilton because his whole legacy was always powerful to people the fact that he was gone, it became even more powerful. He lived through that song and it had a whole different meaning it was the spirit of what he left behind.

The whole fanmail album is flawless
Fun fact: apparently Lefteye was supposed to do the pre-chorus that T-Boz is doing but Lefteye thought it sounded better in T-Boz's voice
Love this track from TLC. Thanks for the info.
How do you know that?😬

If you’ve ever heard Janet Jackson’s song what about. It isn’t. This song was inspired from that
Jack if you love this, listen to Janet Jackson's "What About", which is the song that inspired "I'm Good At Being Bad"
This my favorite TLC song🔥
Fanmail era had the best production 🔥 RIP Lisa ❤️

Love TLC they have some bangers 🔥🔥🔥
One of my favorite TLC songs...lol. Yeah it blew my mind the first time I heard it too. The switch up is killer.

Still futuristic music
Tlc song I miss you. and Their other song called shout.

My favorite album was fanmail! They were city girls before they knew they were city girls lol
This was gonna be a single but they decided against it because of their young fans
I agree with their choice. They had better more positive songs like My Life that could have been a single instead
This is my favorite song on the Fanmail album
HEEEEEYYYYYY 🎵🎶 I was just bumpin dis da other Day ‼️
Wait. This version doesn't have the Love To Love You Baby sample. 😢
Nope. They had to revamp after Donna Summer heard the song and changed her mind about giving permission for sample clearance.
The song that got ppl slapped by they grannies bc they thought it was safe to play 😂
Never heard this one before either, great resction Jack as always.
Jack I think you'd really like Silly Ho, Unpretty, Lovesick & I Miss You from FanMail too! Also there's a Japan only track called 'U In Me' 😎
Whooooo fanmail was on reapeat in my teenage years!
Did you catch TLC’s new documentary “TLC Forever?” You should do a review on that.
All time favorite girl group!
Great album
TBoz wrote this song and Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis produced it.. they based the melody changes on Janet Jackson’s song what about
Left Eye also wrote her own rap verse. She's credited as a writer on the album.
