It is about sex and promiscuity. They weren't a couple, just a series of hookups/one-night stands. The way we were taught sex ed is with every person youvr slept with you also slept with their partners which is what they're conveying with the changing photos. Anyway, I remember this scene being a big deal when it was released to see a straight white couple in an AIDS conversation. We also used to have posters of TLC with the condom eyepatches at my school.
The AIDS crisis hit us hard. My family especially. My sister got it from her husband and struggled so much she almost died in the 90s before they came up with drugs. Her husband died. We (the family) all forgave him. It was tragic the whole ordeal.

It also addressed some complex realities in the U.S. Black community. And yes, they intentionally removed Left-Eye’s raps from mainstream radio for obvious reasons.
This mv was shot on location at Universal Studios in the same water where Jaws was filmed. They are standing on a small platform over pretty deep water. They had scuba divers circling underneath in case one of them fell in.
This song still makes me teary eyed. Especially now, knowing that when they buried Left Eye, they put the rap or at least a portion of it on her grave stone.

I really think the lyric, “don’t go chasing waterfalls” alone is powerful. Because when you literally chase a waterfall you might end up drowning if caught underneath one recklessly or you know it’s a bad situation if you end up falling off the edge of cliff in a waterfall. And the lyric right after that is just as powerful, “please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re use to”. Chances are if you stay near slower moving and more calm waters, you are able to take in the situation and know where to tread and when it’s safe.
I literally am a huge fan of TLC, and it was this song that really got me in to their music. I was a 15 year old kid at school, and this song and music video hit me HARD! TLC always had narratives in their music. They always touched upon real issues in life that no one else at the time were speaking about. Or they were speaking against the uprising and the glamourisation of street violence with the hip hop and rap artists who were basing their entire existence off 'hood life' As for the HIV line, TLC were huge advocates of safe sex. So much so that Left Eye used to wear a condom over her left eye during their earlier chapter as a band. I feel girl bands like Destinys Child and so on are pretty face value and basic because they were all about being a cohesive band that just put out music. TLC were three unique individuals who weren't afraid to speak their minds. And this showed during one of their awards speeches where they obliterated their record label and management for holding back their royalties. And finally, the water animation was a big thing at the time. I remember being wowed by it.
Certain pop stations do exclusively take out rap portions of songs. They'll play different genres of popular music except rap, and if there's a rap feature or a rap part in a song of mostly singing like TLC's "Waterfalls" (despite Left Eye literally being a member of the group), rhey'll take the rap part right out...

My dad died back when I was 7 years old from hiv he got from a bad steroid injection in Mexico. He was very into body building, even went against Arnold at muscle beach and modeled. Sadly, he got skinny fast and passed away. I didn't know this song was about hiv growing up until later on.
What l liked about this music video is that they show how HIV affects not just the gay community, which is what made the epidemic blow up so much in the 80s. But it's not a "gay" disease... It was just very prevalent in the gay community due to unprotected sex, and of course, being gay was already a terrible thing in the eyes of society, so naturally, it caused some major headlines, and it just became known as a "gay disease" in western society. But it's a virus... it doesn't discriminate.

Ummm, the rap is iconic and it was never cut out of any version of it. The song is considered their crowning achievement and the rap is a huge part of why. It cemented Left Eye as a seriously gifted emcee

My dad died back when I was 7 years old from hiv he got from a bad steroid injection in Mexico. He was very into body building, even went against Arnold at muscle beach and modeled. Sadly, he got skinny fast and passed away. I didn't know this song was about hiv growing up until later on.

What l liked about this music video is that they show how HIV affects not just the gay community, which is what made the epidemic blow up so much in the 80s. But it's not a "gay" disease... It was just very prevalent in the gay community due to unprotected sex, and of course, being gay was already a terrible thing in the eyes of society, so naturally, it caused some major headlines, and it just became known as a "gay disease" in western society. But it's a virus... it doesn't discriminate.

Ummm, the rap is iconic and it was never cut out of any version of it. The song is considered their crowning achievement and the rap is a huge part of why. It cemented Left Eye as a seriously gifted emcee
Actually they were correct. Every time I heard it on a pop or easy listening station the rap was always cut out.
@@TheKittsPajamas Yeah they're right. This was very common back then. Radio stations with predominantly white audiences would only play pop and R&B songs if the rap bridge was edited out.
