Ok I didn’t think I’d publicly say this here but it’s relevant. As an HIV Positive person I just wanna say you handled this convo with the utmost respect, class, and knowledge. Thank you. And yes we’ve come a long way since then we even reached a point where a HIV+ can marry an HIV- as long as the infected continues to take their meds and be undetected. ❤
My sister is HIV and she struggled all her life until they came up with these new pills. She would get the cocktail in the 90s she almost died her viral load was in the 12 thousands!
As a teenager in the mid 90's, my generation was hyper-aware of the threat posed by HIV. TLC was one of the groups very committed to the fight against AIDS, promoting safe sex and making condoms a fashion accessory.
Left eye was definitely ahead of her time, her lyrical rap would’ve been unmatched today, had depth & meaning which is lacking in rap now. Tragic RIP🙏🏼

It is about sex and promiscuity. They weren't a couple, just a series of hookups/one-night stands. The way we were taught sex ed is with every person youvr slept with you also slept with their partners which is what they're conveying with the changing photos. Anyway, I remember this scene being a big deal when it was released to see a straight white couple in an AIDS conversation. We also used to have posters of TLC with the condom eyepatches at my school.
Toni Braxton Week 1! #5. He Wasn’t Man Enough #4. Breathe Again #3. You’re Makin’ Me High #2. Just Be A Man About It #1. Unbreak My Heart Please do Toni Braxton. I couldn’t fit all of her hits in this list, but I think these may be some of her best and most important songs. A week dedicated to this legend would be amazing.
Radio stations played two versions of most songs sung by AA’s that had rap verses. Pop stations with predominantly white audiences got the non rap versions. It’s like they made us live two different lives and experiences of certain songs.

@@billyjohn7846 You sir are 100% incorrect. The background was there behind them. I’d watch the behind the scenes before commenting on something like this.
Waterfalls was one of the most expensive and considered one of the most innovative of its time. The dancing water bodies was kinda magical in ‘95. This song sucks you in with a vibe and hooks you with the message.
YALL DONT UNDERSTAND THE AMOUNT OF AGGRAVATION I GET FROM THE RADIO OR KARAOKE TRACKS WHEN THEY SKIP MY BOO LEFT EYES RAP. SAME WITH NO SCRUBS. SO IM HAPPY YALL GET TO SEE THE THE ICON IN FULL FORCE SHE BE SPITTIN.
Back then there were pop stations whose tagline was that they DON’T play rap music. So it wasn’t unusual for pop songs that had raps in them, to have a radio version with it cut out.
I'm assuming number 1 is no scrubs, but I wish people would explore older TLC. I loved their first album, it's what made us all fall in love with them, and those videos were so fun. Plus more rapping, lol.
Fun Facts: 1. Left Eye's rap was written during her time in a detention center. She was arrested for burning down her abusive boyfriend's house. 2. The video was shot at Universal Studios. They were on platforms in deep water with divers circling them. 3. According to Chilli, the video concept was based on the movie The Abyss.
This song still makes me teary eyed. Especially now, knowing that when they buried Left Eye, they put the rap or at least a portion of it on her grave stone.
TLC is quintessential Gen X. The HIV/AIDS crisis was finally passing its peak socially at this time (1995). This song had many meanings, but it was like a final “conscious” farewell to the very showy pretentious “We Are the a World” era of AIDS awareness. It also addressed some complex realities in the U.S. Black community. And yes, they intentionally removed Left-Eye’s raps from mainstream radio for obvious reasons.
This mv was shot on location at Universal Studios in the same water where Jaws was filmed. They are standing on a small platform over pretty deep water. They had scuba divers circling underneath in case one of them fell in.
I literally am a huge fan of TLC, and it was this song that really got me in to their music. I was a 15 year old kid at school, and this song and music video hit me HARD! TLC always had narratives in their music. They always touched upon real issues in life that no one else at the time were speaking about. Or they were speaking against the uprising and the glamourisation of street violence with the hip hop and rap artists who were basing their entire existence off 'hood life' As for the HIV line, TLC were huge advocates of safe sex. So much so that Left Eye used to wear a condom over her left eye during their earlier chapter as a band. I feel girl bands like Destinys Child and so on are pretty face value and basic because they were all about being a cohesive band that just put out music. TLC were three unique individuals who weren't afraid to speak their minds. And this showed during one of their awards speeches where they obliterated their record label and management for holding back their royalties. And finally, the water animation was a big thing at the time. I remember being wowed by it.
I really think the lyric, “don’t go chasing waterfalls” alone is powerful. Because when you literally chase a waterfall you might end up drowning if caught underneath one recklessly or you know it’s a bad situation if you end up falling off the edge of cliff in a waterfall. And the lyric right after that is just as powerful, “please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re use to”. Chances are if you stay near slower moving and more calm waters, you are able to take in the situation and know where to tread and when it’s safe.
They have footage of behind the scenes for this video. It wasn’t all in studio footage lol they actually shot it where jaws was shot. th-cam.com/video/qRV-xgzaenA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jQxB9_IUlSxF15vO

Certain pop stations do exclusively take out rap portions of songs. They'll play different genres of popular music except rap, and if there's a rap feature or a rap part in a song of mostly singing like TLC's "Waterfalls" (despite Left Eye literally being a member of the group), rhey'll take the rap part right out...

What l liked about this music video is that they show how HIV affects not just the gay community, which is what made the epidemic blow up so much in the 80s. But it's not a "gay" disease... My dad died back when I was 7 years old from hiv he got from a bad steroid injection in Mexico. He was very into body building, even went against Arnold at muscle beach and modeled. Sadly, he got skinny fast and passed away. I didn't know this song was about hiv growing up until later on.
The first time I ever heard this song was at a talent show when I was in the 5th or 6th grade at this elementary School in Redding california. It was funny because at least 3 to 5 different groups all came up and did this same song. It was hilarious

She did not have to sit there and talk about her chains and interject other stuff that had nothing to do with subject Like a lot of these rappers do. She stayed on the subject. That's why in my honest opinion she's one of the best female rappers ever
Thanks to the movie We're the Millers, I can't listen to Lisa's rap solo without seeing Wil Poulter acting it out in the movie. It is a funny scene though.
I felt like it was them represented dead souls . Like they died young and although they are in a better place and dancing it was still sad they didn’t get to fulfill their life.
Ummm, the rap is iconic and it was never cut out of any version of it. The song is considered their crowning achievement and the rap is a huge part of why. It cemented Left Eye as a seriously gifted emcee
@@TheKittsPajamas Yeah they're right. This was very common back then. Radio stations with predominantly white audiences would only play pop and R&B songs if the rap bridge was edited out.

organized noize i think wrote this song - rico wade and sleepy brown. cee-lo green is on the backgrounds. bookeem woodbine, ella joyce from set it off is in the music video. fun fact: the scenes of the group dancing on the standing water was shot in a parking lot. f gary gray - the director behind friday, set it off and straight outta compton - he directed this music video. it cost roughly $5M to make it. left eye's rap was inspired by a rainbow she saw on her way to the halfway house, a condition of her conviction for burning down andre rison's house. what a tiime. in the second story, i always thought the pictures flashing by were of the one guy meaning his life was flashing before his eyes....
I took the flashing pictures as all the men that the woman had slept with. Then our dudes pic faded as he had passed away from hiv/aids and then the same thing with the woman
Best tlc song, one of the best songs of all time. I still believe left eyes rap is the best rap Verse of all time, deep, meaningful, emotive, incredible metaphors, the delivery..it was perfect. My dad died back when I was 7 years old from hiv he got from a bad steroid injection in Mexico. He was very into body building, even went against Arnold at muscle beach and modeled. Sadly, he got skinny fast and passed away. I didn't know this song was about hiv growing up until later on.
They filmed this over where they filmed jaws at universal studios with a background behind them! They were above a ton of water
The first time I ever heard this song was at a talent show when I was in the 5th or 6th grade at this elementary School in Redding california. It was funny because at least 3 to 5 different groups all came up and did this same song. It was hilarious
my mom used to play this song all the time when i was little and now this era is mostly all i listen to 😭 i feel like y'all would love toni braxton.

I believe Hype Williams actually filmed this in the ocean. They are on some kind of floating platform and has safety divers underwater while shooting.
I love your commentary. Made my day.
Ironically Dru Hill is an R&B boyband and had the singer Sisqo in it
Def not a boyband.
@@TheKittsPajamas boyband, male group SAME DIFFERENCE
Male group.
@@DeeDiamond2981 same difference
@@billyjohn7846 Def not the same. “Boy band” is almost disrespectful.
"Dear Lie" would have been in my top 5 to be honest, i love the message of that track.
Nobody speaks on the amazing talent that left I had to be able to rap on any subject and make it make coherent sense.
The all water them was to lighten the mood after the HIV comment.
I felt like it was them represented dead souls . Like they died young and although they are in a better place and dancing it was still sad they didn’t get to fulfill their life.
It’s a crime they removed the rap on pop radio. Her bars were insane and we all used to wait for it
They were actually in a body of water, they were at a beach i think on a acrylic platform, they showed behind the scenes of how they shot the video
You gotta think about the water animation part. It may be goofy to you now but back then that was probably the most coolest shit ever
Ummm, the rap is iconic and it was never cut out of any version of it. The song is considered their crowning achievement and the rap is a huge part of why. It cemented Left Eye as a seriously gifted emcee
Actually they were correct. Every time I heard it on a pop or easy listening station the rap was always cut out.
@@TheKittsPajamas Yeah they're right. This was very common back then. Radio stations with predominantly white audiences would only play pop and R&B songs if the rap bridge was edited out.

They actually did put a huge platform in the middle of the ocean and used a fake backdrop.
The CGI? water figures look a bit silly now but would have been a huge deal in 94

Yall didnt even watch the whole video 😂
organized noize i think wrote this song - rico wade and sleepy brown. cee-lo green is on the backgrounds. bookeem woodbine, ella joyce from set it off is in the music video. fun fact: the scenes of the group dancing on the standing water was shot in a parking lot. f gary gray - the director behind friday, set it off and straight outta compton - he directed this music video. it cost roughly $5M to make it. left eye's rap was inspired by a rainbow she saw on her way to the halfway house, a condition of her conviction for burning down andre rison's house. what a tiime. in the second story, i always thought the pictures flashing by were of the one guy meaning his life was flashing before his eyes....
I took the flashing pictures as all the men that the woman had slept with. Then our dudes pic faded as he had passed away from hiv/aids and then the same thing with the woman
Shout out to ORGANIZED Noize for making this track.
RIP RICO WADE

Best tlc song, one of the best songs of all time. I still believe left eyes rap is the best rap Verse of all time, deep, meaningful, emotive, incredible metaphors, the delivery..it was perfect. My fav part of the video is the way tboz and chilli look at eachother n smile during left eyes verse bcoz they just knew she did THE thing. Ps the sky looked more realistic before the vid was remastered lol
They said three letters took them to their final resting place. Not three letter word..
I never realized what this song was about, either.
