I love how theres actually some strategy during the chase instead of "hold left and jump sometimes". Really nice change!

You **can** do hold left and Jake perfect jumps, but yea there's some counterplay if you don't do it perfectly.
Honestly i like how this leans more into psychological horror than “oooh look i kill told ooh blood everywhere scary!”
The blocks seemingly degrading through the level design and the new voice acting are just uncomfortably fantastic!

i like how mx talks to lucas in a relatively friendly tone, almost like how a father would talk to his son while playing a game with them. especially with that "Hey Champ!"
the other mfs in sonic.exe game when talking usually go like "this is so fun, blah blah blah, i like suffering rahh" or some edgy shit like that, this is such a refreshing change of pace.

Some things I love about this updated demo:
1. The screen gets progressively darker as you go on throughout the level, though it's more pronounced after MX says, "Find me"
2. After MX says "Find me," the music becomes more simplified while staying in minor key; meanwhile, the level becomes progressively devoid of life and blocks, giving the game an empty feel that really adds to the spooky ambience
3. You can see MX at 1:27, which is a nice lil' "ohmahgawshwutwuzthat" kind of moment for players
4. Updated sprites - I particularly love the freaky clouds
5. MX doesn't go into his giant form from the get-go, opting for a more zombie-like form during the first part and only getting giant after he jumps from the pit
6. First chase segment requires a bit more tact since MX is faster than you, while the second one is more about just running and not looking back since MX is still faster but is delayed when he runs into things
TL;DR: These guys are cooking and I'm all for it

i like how in this version there's actually some thinking required to it instead of just get the fuck outta there and hoping chance can save you, you NEED to let MX break the blocks to help you get back to the start, but you still need to be careful as he does go through EVERYTHING, also how he doesn't immediately transform into his truest form, and how the fall was way more anticlimactic, it still had the game going which was nice, oh and how mx was weirdly more warmer towards Lucas, calling him a champ, how cute, like how the clouds have different designs now, and how you collected *e v e r y* coin, gotta get that life
The original is fun too because you can barely outrun MX so you have to take paths you wouldn’t normally take and have speedrunner-like skills

TL;DR; MX just messes around with Lucas' mind, and i love it
The only thing I don't like about this build is that they got rid of the toad cutscene to show how easily MX can slaughter Lucas but besides that, nice bulid.

Felt way too edgy, tbh.
That's kind of the point of a horror game.
So I don't know if this is the 'official' Mario '85 channel or not, but I have to give kudos to the developer for the artstyle. Creepypasta video games are such an ancient, beaten-to-death trope by this point. This could've been so forgettable, but the sound direction and the spritework are really fantastic because of Inferno's 'less is more' approach. So many of these games rely on realistic graphics and excessive amounts of blood, which aside from being uncreative, also breaks the retro artstyle and ruins your immersion.
This game operates within the constraints of the NES and pushes them *just enough* to sell the horror motif without overdoing it. Putting the background music in the minor key to just *slightly* distort it and then disabling one of the sound channels as the level goes on are both totally reasonable ways to make the familiar Mario music creepy. The way that the normal Mario sprites slowly degrade as Lucas passes certain 'checkpoints' is a great little touch, too. The sky darkening could've been the only change, but the hills lose their spots and the shading on the clouds changes a little to give them creepy smiling faces. It may not seem like much, but subtle details like that show you how much thought and care the designer put into the whole idea. The original SMB is a very simple game with very limited assets; the more of them that you change, the richer and more 'alive' the world feels.
Which brings me to the crown jewel of the level: the chase. There are SO many treats here. Everything from the original game that could conceivably be used in a threatening manner, from the fireworks explosions to the sound of bricks breaking to the (sadly now removed) 'time running out' music is given a place. The Super Mario sprites especially are NOT very big or detailed, but MX's jagged smile, towering figure, and the fact that he's FASTER THAN YOU NOW are enough to sell the threat he poses. The SMB2 boss music, while a tiny bit of a cheat since it's not from the original game, is still an NES Mario song, and it's definitely more fitting than any of the original game's songs, so I'm cool with that. The big takeaways for me are the decrepit background tiles and the distorted chase music and MX voice clips. Some NES games actually did have voice clips, and they were always a little crackly and distorted because of how primitive the technology back then was. The fact that MX is always screaming to scare the Hell out of Lucas gives Mario '85's voice clips a level of harshness and crunchiness that just works SO MUCH BETTER than if he'd somehow transcended the NES's limitations and had a clear voice. It makes him sound inhuman. The boss music has a similar sound to it, like it's about to blow out the TV speakers. It's urgent and distressing.
And the cloud sprites. My GOD those cloud sprites are amazing. The way they shift from sneering at you to outright screaming once MX jumps out of the pit, the multi-tone shading that makes them look sickly and decrepit, the asymmetrical tiny eyes that makes it hard to tell at a glance that they're there... I love them. They are *gorgeous* in their hideousness.
Everything about this is absolutely perfect. It pushes the bounds of what is possible just enough to land in the uncanny valley of 'this shouldn't be happening' without careening off the cliff into edgy teenager parody material. I cannot wait to see more.

This is a nice change of pace from a lot of similar .exe/creepypasta type games. Whoever Lucas is was weaving and breaking ankles and actually strategizing during the chase rather than running and jumping the intended paths which would have gotten him caught. I also love how Mx speaks to Lucas, like a father or some other friendly figure. That weirdly warm manner with the "Hey Champ" makes it much creepier than the edgier tones these things usually get. It's jarring to have a horrific version of a familiar character speak to you so kindly.
Looking forward to seeing more of this in the future.

Wow a chase that feels fucking scary for once in these cause you gotta really try hard not to get killed
This is a pretty great update to the game. I appreciate the work to make it more directly a fun and accurate gameplay experience instead of something simplistic. I think most of the scares n unnerving bits are good, but I’d personally nix a few, the “Find Me” screen in particular I think lays it on a bit thick. The music being a fucked up 1-1 is fun but I find myself enjoying it more when instruments get removed over the key shift.

This is literally what actually cursed games needs to be interesting, the use of your skills as a player and the first chase segment is proof of that, i just wish more of these games require your skills so you can be more into the gameplay and story

Genuinely really cool, I feel like so often creepypasta games don’t have enough “game” to them, y’know? Focusing more on that is a really fun direction to take for this.
In my opinion the blocks not disappearing was really cool it shows that mx wants to show himself in the way he wants by leaving small details and then revealing himself and not transforming fully

Lookin' good so far, though the one-eyed cloud doesn't go as hard as the one from the January 2022 build and the iconic one from the original first demo that got a better look later on, only to be scrapped now. :P
By the way, I once dreamed of a take on this game, where MX speaks japanese and later on gets rid of the Mario-styled disguise entirely, revealing a horrifying creature. Sounds epic, right?

I think the old version’s design for MX and him running looked a little bit better with the crooked teeth and stuff but it’s still a pretty cool version
