Hi Tampatec, like you, I'm also a technician for 30 years, I have been following you on your videos on you tube on TV repairs, and your videos are very informative, I notice on the start of this video. you did not apply additional solder on the part you will remove, causing it to heat up the circuit board, it time this will damage the foil pattern. One trick is to re solder first the part to apply new flux to loosen the old solder. Doing this would make it easier to unsolder the part.
Thanks man!!! I’ve got my first soldering job tomorrow replacing the relay switch to my air conditioner. I picked up my soldering iron and solder today. I must say this is probably the best soldering video I've seen, thanks a lot. I honestly didn't realize you had to put the whole nozzle of the solder sucker on top of it. I always thought it would melt.

This video was super helpful in teaching an amateur how to solder and desolder. Definitely use the Flux for desoldering. If I did this more often I would get the portable soldering iron too. I used this video to help me desolder the joystick from my ps5 controller. It works like new. Patience is the key and I recommend practicing on some components you are not attached tool first.

Thank you man. I'm working on a project and I made the mistake of over heating the soldering pads because I didn't have the proper tools. I ended up stripping the pads and getting solder everywhere. Thanks to this I now know what I did wrong. Going straight to Radio Shack to get the right equipment right now. Seriously though thank you so much.

A very good video lots of info. The suction pump tip will keep melting when you touch it with the soldering iron. So, you have to keep it some distance from the soldering iron. Thanks for sharing.

I remember soldering jewelery with a blow torch for cloisonne (decorating it by melting layers of powdered glass on top) in the Silver Smithing workshop in summer camp. :) Technology has certainly advanced since then.
@@robinlillian9471 You should always solder metals with solder made for these metals. Like for silver you need a special silver solder, which has slightly lower temperature and for copper you may go for tin+lead solder (63%tin 37%lead has lowest melting point around 183C). It may be easier but for some applications torch is better anyway.

I like the video. If I was learning to solder I would choose a different soldering gun. That one is fine if you have to solder in the field or you already know how to solder.For the majority of people that solder they like the pencil type soldering gun. I can see it works for you fine.
There were so many things I've been doing wrong. When I'm desolderjng and using a pump would it be good practice to tape the PCB down as when I click the button on the pump there's a bit of a pushback force from the plunger releasing
Electrical engineer's advice, from my father's files. He worked on pump panels for the good of 20 years. 1. Lead is better if you want to use less flux, but you'll be looking into vacuum filtration. (can get pricy). It bonds quick. But for less cough and/or lung cancer or respritory difficulty use lead-free, your trade off is more flux so it bonds well and not having to worry about air filters and all that mess. You can use a simple dust mask for lead-free. In a shop environment this is more than okay. If someone ends up breathing it in it ain't gonna cause the lung ache. 2. Clean tip with wet sponge, pre-tin, add water-flux to the tip of your solder, and have fun. 3. Chisel tips work good for hole-through from experience. 4. Comb through helping hands kits with fine teeth. Cheap ones CAN be gold mines, or a complete rip-offs. 5. Plungers are basic most of them work just fine. If you're more than a hobbyist you can get a desoldering vaccum gun for efficient work. I have a weller heavy duty standard use gun. It's not field but it works well for a workstation at home. They're nice if you can get their expansion kits or a station module with PWM - able to read temps off neutral pole and output watt readout + regulation (not really needed in my case, wellers have a controller built in) Avoid walmart guns. My god if you see someone down the isle, tell them that $19 isn't worth the destoryed product. I got my Weler at Lowes. Considered mid-grade quality, which is minimum at best for the job.

I was wondering if you recommend a variable heat soldering iron or just the standard cheapy at the local,electronic store is good enough. Also if using a variable temp soldering iron. I know you made this years ago but I finally got to see it. But may I suggest that you do NOT solder even wires over a printed circut board or you will be searching for the dropped solder on the card,,,, then have to clean it again..plus hot solder does splatter when it hits so it might be more widespread.otherwise it really was a good video..

mostly it isn't platic but teflon! So you can do some nice heat on it! (Most people love it, if it melts a bit - after hundreds of desoldering sessios - for better fitting around the tip!)
You're right. Wick is definitely a better method but is more expensive and can take longer. The reason the pad can rip off like yours is if the solder is semi-hardened to the pad while being removed. That's why he held his iron on the pad during the process to keep it melted - As you could see, this has the tradeoff of slightly melting his tool's tip. The key is to use the plunger quickly while the pad is fully melted and get in and out before the plunger starts melting.
As always a nice video but the iron at 8:21 couldn't heat the joint quickly because it wasn't proceeding heat but because of the tip. Conical tips need a lot of heat where as if you had a larger wedge or angle tip it would have heated the joint in 2 seconds. Yes probably that iron may not have those tips.
I always get a lot of criticism when people see me using my solder sucker / plunger. Like you I also end up touching the solder iron tip and I see you’re doing the same (the plastic tip is a bit burned). There is a technique that I haven’t really mastered where you never need to touch the iron tip but while removing the tip you put the solder sucker down (in extremely quick succession).
Informative video. However, the capacitor you first desoldered was soldered with bent pins. I suppose the capacitor was wrongly soldered. However, thanks for your video.

The reason your camera can't focus - it is too close to the board. Camera lenses have a minimum focal distance (usually three or four feet.) Some camera lenses have a Macro function that you can use if you need to get closer than that - but most cameras can zoom in enough to get those extreme tight shots, even from three or four feet.
dirty tip. Use a brass ball to help clean it up. You want the end of your iron to be silver and shiny so the solder can stick to it. Sorry if this is a really late response

The soldering iron you are using is actually crap! The bit is also not clean. It is taking too much time to melt the solder. Before making a tutorial video one must master the skills one wants to impart to others. Please use a bit of flux on the solder point to make a clean job of it. You have damaged the tip of the de-soldering pump by pressing it too hard and too long on the hot solder. And please get a better mains powered 40 watt soldering iron. Sorry for being critical. Please bear with me.

This is not silver, this is tin which has waaaaaaaaaaaaay lower temp. For silver soldering you need a torch.

You could just press the solder sucker down past the click and it has a rid that stick out pushing the sucked solder out .
