A little tip to keep an alcantara steering wheel cleaner longer is to brush it after you drive the car. It takes 15 seconds. Or at least every few days. It will take much longer for your hand oils to mat the fibers down
@@sunilraj7692 As long as you keep them clean. If they are leather gloves, the leather will of course obsorb oil over time, and that oil will transfer right into the Alcantara. So just make sure to clean the gloves every few months
I have a 2020 RS3 with the half alcantra and leather. I try my best not to touch the alcantra part, keep it clean, brush it etc. I’d much rather just have an all leather. Great job getting that good!
Yeah, I completely agree with you. But the unfortunate side is when you’re sitting in the car on the showroom floor and you feel the brand new, clean Alcantara for the first time, there’s just nothing like it. So everyone ends up opting for that option because it makes them feel more “race car”. Without giving it a little forethought of what it might look like in three months.
Always love your videos and i always make sure to use Colourlock for all my Alcantara / Leather needs. Loved the demo and learned a few tips! Can't wait to catch you guys in Helen next time.
I have a GT4 that gets driven all summer and a Cayenne GTS that gets driven year round. It’s weird but my steering wheels are still like new. It’s amazing what can be kept clean if you wash your hands before you get in the car.
I am looking forward to the remainder and finish of the interior. Sometimes, the visual appeal of Alcantara as opposed to the feel of it can be confusing. Nice job!
Hi, someone applied detailing product on my steering wheel and its been extremely slippery which is dangerous because sometimes it slipped out of my hand, it's been like this for about a year and don't know what to do, it's leather. How do I get rid of the slipperiness and make it normal or mildly sticky again?
I stop steaming areas with adhesive after it messed up the steering wheel one of my cars. KCX PO is the way to go to clean suede leather or faux suede.
My m performance wheel that came with my e92 is pretty beat up I tried sonax with the colourlock brush but don’t have a steamer not sure how aggressive to clean the wheel without damaging the fibers, any tips?
Over here why I live you send your steering wheel out to get it professionally rewrapped, you can get them do it to your preferred spec and they do an awesome job. They remove all the old leather/alcantara and retrim it. There's no real need to get a new steering wheel normally it costs around 300-400€
Hey Matt, is there an artificial leather equivalent for Colourlock Shield? The product description sounds it like this shouldn't be used for those types of leather.
Too coincidental, Just this week I replaced my GTS’ alcantara wheel ( only 7k miles). Went the carbon fiber and leather route…should hold up & wear much better 😊 Alacantara is just terrible for high use surfaces.
Serious question, not trying to be rude. Is there a way your microphone can cancel out the breathing? Recent fan of your channel but seems like in every video I've watched the breathing is significant.
And this is why Alcantara doesn't belong on steering wheels. I got l leather on my GT4 after having Alcantara in another car that is always getting matted.
They never should have made alcantara steering wheels. It is just so nasty so fast. Leather or carbon really easy to keep clean and sanitary. I never understood the appeal of fake suede.
Have it on my ctsV from factory and can’t stand the wheel I have gloves and it still doesn’t hold up well. Never getting a car with it again. Doesn’t even feel right when your hands are clean which I do before I drive.
Well let’s see, alcantara is NOT leather. It’s not as good looking as leather. It’s not as durable as leather. It takes more frequent cleaning, absorbs grime like a sponge and can’t be repaired like leather. Personally, I don’t get it. Why would anyone want alcantara? Everyone can keep calling it “premium” all they want … it’s nonsense. It’s just expensive crap that’s not even better than vinyl. I will admit, Matt does an outstanding job cleaning and restoring this material. It’s just not worth the fuckery involved … imo. If I went to all the trouble of removing the steering wheel, I’d just pony up to get it wrapped in leather. 😊😊😊
Pro tip on keeping alcantara clean: don’t freaking buy it. Why in the heck do people go crazy for this crap. It doesn’t look as good as leather. It doesn’t feel as good as leather. Oh it’s grippy? Wear some flipping gloves. No way I would ever go through this process. Juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
@@ObsessedGarage right. I’ve watched you do a way easier version of this on your cars and to be quite frank, you’re the best in the game. The results are astonishing. I just can’t believe that people would subject themselves to this when you compare it to cleaning leather. I get it for a race car but man, no way I’d have it in a street car. Either way you slice it, you did an amazing job with this wheel.

I really like the look of Alcantara but I'll never have it on a steering wheel again. I plan to swap mine (Cayman GTS) with a leather one.
How about 50/50 I'd like mine with a part alcantara and part leather. The most commonly touched areas would be leather
How to make alcantara sofer? I have a custom alcantara on my TT. Compared with TTRS steering wheels is much softer.
It comes down to the quality of the materials used.
When taking the steering wheel off you should look inside for a mark and where it is to the spline.

I think it's about 300.
What is he using to sand with? Specifically with the foam middle

Dry ice with particle control size is the best way to restore Alcántara
I wonder if one of those depilling fabric shavers would shave off the fuzz without having to sand down the fabric.
Yes they do. That’s how I restored my alcantara wheel.
A damp microfiber towel in laundry detergent works the best.
Hey Matt, is there an artificial leather equivalent for Colourlock Shield? The product description sounds it like this shouldn't be used for those types of leather.
It works fine on synthetic leathers.
Yes, they have it too. www.obsessedgarage.com/products/colourlock-artificial-leather-cleaner?_pos=2&_psq=artificial&_ss=e&_v=1.0

What would you say if you saw someone wearing gloves while driving a car like that ?
I would cringe a little. It’s a tad too dorky for me.
Straight style electric shaver will trim all the pilling from the alcantara with minimal effort.
That will pull some of it, but not reactivate the fibers like needed. Sanding is a must.
Serious question, not trying to be rude. Is there a way your microphone can cancel out the breathing? Recent fan of your channel but seems like in every video I've watched the breathing is significant.
There isn't. The lav mic is super sensitive. I've tried a bunch of different options. This is the best.
Only thing worse than alcantara on a shift knob is alcantara on a steering wheel
I saw a guy dry ice cleaning the alcantara steering wheel and it was restored to new. Try it and you’ll see
