It's jealousy, and comes from a long line of women who were teached to be the "best they could" to find a good husband, making them hating the women who were "better" than them. In old times women did not received the same teaching as men. Men were teached how to work as a team, despite differences, since they were sent in fabrics or war; women were teached to be competitive, sly and perfectionist, to win a better husband. Men were workes, women were aspiring brides. It's only recent that women are teached and awaited to be good just like men to work as a team. And I must say, thank God.

Streep's acting is always impeccable, and it's also so delightful to watch! I still do like the Julie scenes, and Powell is also a great actress.

No, if you watch the whole movie you'll see that first, they didn't want her to tale that class because it was only for men, and foe chefs so they told her it was too hard for her. The director (the small woman in black) wanted Julia to take a beginners course and when she finally got her diploma, she didn't want to give it to her.
They were the ones who ask Julia to prove herself to them, because they believed she couldn't make it, because she wasn't a man.

That's the whole point of measuring "how good", is to compare it with others. People who self-centered and believe that they're the beat tend not being "the best", far from it. Comparing oneself with others can either help one being more ambitious or to humble one self.
