    I’ve said this before. But, again, you have the absolute best reviews on shoes bar none . I love when you tell if a shoes is correct for , high arches, low etc, etc, etc. no one else does all of that ,and talks about the shoe too. Excellent videos !

      I would disagree pretty strongly with his explanation with arches. He specifically said "neutral cadence runner". He may have meant "neutral gait" because neutral cadence is not a thing. It's all about mechanics. There are plenty of folks who are neutral with low arches and high arches who overpronate. I get he may be trying to simplify the concept with the messaging but it's incorrect. I have a medical background, ran for school/personally all my life, and have 10+ years of specialty running experience.

    Went to a local Utah show store, tried these on and liked them. They didn't have the color I wanted and ordering through them online didn't help their local business. Saw your review, short, sweet and knowledgeable. You earned my business. I ordered the shoes, they came with a discount, free shipping and no taxes (just kidding, pretend I didn't say that)! Thanks!

    I have this shoe done about 85 km in this shoe.
    Good all round shoe .
    Speed tempo long runs speed work.
    It is first Altra shoe I have had.
    I like it very much.
    Very comfortable stable.
    Nice wide toe box.
    Great reviews Steve.

      yes. they make next to no shoes that care for the pinky and too much if not all shoes that assume that all altra fans never kicked a football in their life(esp early lives) that irreversibly deformed their thumb inward....my thumb is almost literally in the middle of the minimalist front mesh of vt.

    Thanks for another great review! Something that wasn't addressed was the lateral outsole of the Torin 5 that peels off at low mileage. I've heard this complaint from many folks and it happened to me at 130 miles and at 12 miles. I was holding off on getting another pair of 5's, hoping that that wasn't the case for the 6. I love the feel of the shoe but at $150-$160, I shouldn't also need to buy Shoe goo!

    I've got about 310 miles in my Torin 5's. Never had an issue with the tongue thankfully. Midsole still seems to have some good life so that's a great sign! I like the heel update for the lock down in the 6 but hate that they got rid of that top eyelet chain. Seems like an overall great update to the 5!

    According to the Altra website, the Escalante 3 is on their Standard fit last, not the (wider) Original fit. Did you misspeak? Also, do you know which is wider: the Stardard fit in a wide or the Original fit?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      So, Altra actually sent out all of their literature on the Escalante listing it as the original fit, which is wider than the standard fit. I am unsure why they changed it online to standard. In speaking with representatives from Altra, they are now saying the Escalante is between a standard and original. This Torin is definitely standard so the Escalante is wider than this model. I wish they were a little more clear on their widths sometimes.

  • @WildOutdoorLiving

    I’ve loved my Torin 4s. I’ve recently had to start running in a pair of Mizunos because after taking a couple years off of actual running my calves can’t handle the zero drop. (Unfortunately I can’t slowly build back up to it)
    I wish Altra would make one or two models with a raised heal. I love the way their toe box fits and the Torin 4 is probably the best fitting shoe Ive owned. They are still my go to for walking and hiking.

    • @robertlynch4839

      Hey there - might want to check out Topo Athletic if you haven’t already. They have a wider toe box and offer shoes with 3mm offsets and more.

    • @cherine777
      @cherine777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! So in South Africa, we can’t get Topos. However, adding a heel lift in the Altra shoe does give it a bit of a drop that will help. I use it in my Lone peaks (they’re old, so I just use them for trail hill repeats) but no need in my Olympus 4s as they feel very different. I still have a pair of Altra Torin 4 with not many kms on. So going to try the heel lift in them as well.

      @lyrilljackson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cherine777 u mean using generic "padding/comfort/healthy" insoles? lol some of them add like 10mm it's pretty wack (for altra fans)

    • @cherine777
      @cherine777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lyrilljackson I mean the padding that goes halfway to give you a little lift so that you can transition back to zero drop. Some people can’t just go zero. Sometimes, a little help goes a long way. That way people can continue to experience, enjoy and love everything about Altras. And, for those not fortunate enough to live in a country that sells Topo, that gives an alternative.

    • @lyrilljackson
      @lyrilljackson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cherine777 yeah that's pretty much what I meant. I don't know about transitioning. the only problem more seasoned altra users have is transitioning to none altra shoes I feel. But i've been getting better at that actually. clocking in the 8th year here. I know this might be more of an issue if the altra user is less experienced or has never biked/climbed/etc much (which basically force mid to front foot contact). I've also been getting better at not stressing the mid-front section as much, even though I'll likely never be switching off maining altras any time soon aka I do want that ample front cushion without the marshmellow style of hoka (even though hoka has/would have a definitively better ankle support --if it were zero drop, + hugs my deformed thumbtoe better.)

    Looking forward to this one. The Torin is my go to recovery and long run shoe. I like the Rivera, similar cushion, if slightly different rides, IMO for anything under 90 minutes, but when going over 90 minutes the extra stack of the Torin sure is felt and appreciated! I never really had tongue problems so long as I laced the shoe all the way up.

    • @lyrilljackson
      @lyrilljackson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RunMoore no idea why people consider torin high cushion lol. my whole family bought the torin 1.5 ish or whatever gen it was. feels just like the average tennis/ping pong shoe cushion, if not slightly more esp on the front and obviously softer, but def very narrow on the back by comparison too so they don't wear it as much sadly cus they are not altra diehards like i am.
      as for high arc, i'm not really high arc but i've never feared twisting inward the bottom of my flaps. but I find the p1 just alright. def nowhere as stable as torin just out of basic geometry of being more lower to the ground (torin) while of the more or less same length and width (slightly wider also cus i bought 44.5 vs 44). def wear it more in winter with all the chunky clothing weighing me up. But I do think natural riding stance and balanced cushioning and zero drop should apply on both X and Y axis, as a principle.

    I have the Torin 5 and found two faults: the tread seemed to wear down much faster and outside started to peel off on both right and left foot. Additionally, the tongue was such a 'hard' material at the end that it dug into my ankle and caused discomfort. Do you know if these two components are different on the 6 compared to the 5?

      i dont like esc series because it's obviously more form vs function toned. 3 seems streamlined into the torin design but unlike paradigm it don't even have the bionic pattern, nor ego max. which makse it even that more obvious of a downgrade/budget package vs just a conscious "minimal" preference choice..also they aren't making men's special colors for the 3...yet? For that tier of padding I was hoping they would have brought back the instinct/intuition by now......my favorite altra by far.

    Great overview as usual! I had no issues with the top of the tongue but that convoluted lacing system is a nightmare. Glad to see they changed that. The new heelcup looks great too. I'd also like to have a little more bounce in the midsole. I'm 190 so that may contribute to the lack of bounce but my Escalantes feel bouncier with less stack.

    Tried this shoe on locally last week and despite going with the Lone Peak because I wanted better traction in the coming winter months(as an everyday shoe), this Torin is still on my mind. I’m flat footed but seem to wear out my Timp 2’s on the outside portion of my foot evidencing supination, which surprised me. From your review it seems this shoe might be a good alternative. I don’t like a lot of arch support/ lockdown as it causes me more foot strain, it didn’t seem like the Torin 6 had a lot of arch support or maybe the support it has is exactly what I need. The lockdown/support of the Provision line is about as much as I can handle. Just my 2 cents worth…if anyone else has this flat-footed issue. Have to mention tho that I had to go into the wide shoe as the regular width was pinching my pinky toes due to bunion issues. Would like to see a bit of stiffness added to this but I’ll take it anyway!

      Usually, people with ankle, knee, or hip pain have instability issues. That means you are over or under-pronating when you walk. We would recommend the Paradigm 6. It is the stable version of the Torin 6. It has the same maximum cushion feel with a hint of added stability.

    Just to be clear the Torin is a moderate cushioning level model. If you want max cushioning you’d want the Paradigm. Not sure why they choose such a lightweight model as the Escalante to be the option with the widest fit. Makes no sense to me. Why would they pick the widest option fitting upper on the narrowest platform?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Torin is actually considered Altra's "max cushion neutral shoe". While it doesn't have the same stack height as the Paradigm, it has significantly more cushion than the light and mid cushion neutral models, Escalante and Rivera.

    Leave it to Altra to replace one major flaw design with another. Fixed the sharp tongue issue but the Torin 6 will have no heel lock eyelet for runner's loop. A number one problem with the Escalante 2.5 is it had no heel lock eyelet. So they fixed that by adding it in the new Escalante 3. I'm confused. Can somebody please tell me how something as benign as a extra eyelet harms the quality of a shoe. Most running shoes have them. The V-shape heel is not for lockdown. It's to take the strain off the achilles tendon. The shoe designers for Altra need to be drug tested it's that simple.

    For someone like me who has flat feet and low arches, which type of Altra shoe do you think would be best?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would look into either the Provision or the Paradigm, as these are both stability models designed for people with flat feet. The main difference between the two is that the Provision is a mid cushion shoe and the Paradigm is a max cushion shoe, so you can choose between them based on your cushion preferences. The Provision also has a slightly wider toebox if that is a concern for you.

    Torin 5 was NOT extremely popular with Torin lifers like me. Tongue was not the deal breaker, the increase in toe box width was though. I tried 5 different pairs. Tried a couple or Rivera's? Not enough cushioning. The 5 was the lowest rated review I've ever seen for Torin. No one liked the bigger toe box flopping around. Hope 6 is back to old design.

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The toebox on the Torin 6 is as wide as the 5 but is more shallow and the material is less forgiving, so it has a tighter fit. Despite some complaints, the 5 ended up being their most popular Torin, especially for people who need the extra width.

    Don't agree with you about the heel. They added extra puffiness which in my case doesn't really help with heel lock and just feels weird, and adds unnecessary weight. They could've simply stripped it down and just added minimal padding the way Puma does in their racing models, and it would've been a much more secure lockdown. Also the heel has minimal structure so this whole fucking thing will eventually crunch and collapse at the base. Design brainfart from Altra imho.
