You wake with a start, shaking and sweating. Nothing can stop the memories from hunting you down. You’re not safe, not even here, imprisoned and surrounded by guards. Your heart is pounding painfully. You want to escape from your body, escape from your mind, escape from the pain. You dress numbly, trying not to think too much about anything. Yet still you are haunted by fragmented thoughts that refuse to leave you. You go outside. The sun has barely begun its climb up through the deep, dark sky. The calm ebb and flow of the gentle waters begins to calm and cleanse you. You sit by the lake and drink in the peace of the quiet dawn air. The nightmares from the depths of night slowly begin to wash away. From behind you, you can hear the voices of children laughing and playing. You let out a breath and suddenly you find that you are smiling. You will be alright. You will heal. You know you will. It will take time - months, years, decades even. But healing will come. In time it will come. You stand. You take a deep breath. Without hesitation you plunge into the lake. As the clean bright water washes up against your skin, you can feel the fear slipping soundlessly into the waves.
