    Driving a forklift isn't hard at all. I currently drive a sit down clamp truck, and double fork. My trainer was very patient and made sure I knew everything before releasing me. I didn't have a trainer at my last job. I ended up failing, but I was bless with a better job. I started off as a temp, and now I'm going full time this week.
    Edit: I can now drive a standup forklift(its not a reach truck),reach truck, a
    standup clamp truck, a walkie and OP. I also work for a new company.😀

      I like your still-present & enthusiastic regard for being a lift truck operator as your chosen occupation. I think its a pretty good line of work that I too find satisfying.
      My father drove truck by trade his entire adult life so, for me, working a similar role in the same industry would come naturally & easy for me.
      However, I entered the workforce as a young teen in the restaurant industry instead, though. Working my way up from entry level teen busboy/dshwshr to prep, line cook. I would eventually move up the ladder to the kitchen lead cook and then as Chef. All phases incl. server, bartender to various levels of kitchen & restaurant mgmt. over the course of 35 years.
      About half of those years, I've worked as a forklift operator, loading pallets, drums, bins, etc. for different manufacturing plants & inť l shipping warehouse companies. I started my first warehouse job learning forklift at 18 yrs old when my dad helped me get a job at one of the companies he used to make freight pickups & deliveries to.
      My point is, I've had both trades to fall back on, when I get burned out on one of them. I'll switch back to the other, around every 6-8 years or so.
      I happen to be in the middle if one of those transitions right now. I'm going back to operating forklift again starting on this next Tuesday. I like both fields & love the fact that I'm highly skilled in both industries, as it allows me to always enjoy going to work every day w/o getting burned out at either job type. I may or may not go back to being a Chef again in about 6 or 8 yrs from now...we'll see.
      For now though, I'm just excited to get back into shipping/receiving/warehousing industry as a lift truck operator again! :-)

      Lights, levers, steering wheels, you get the idea.
      Knowing what the levers do would be nice, one raises and lowers the fork, another pushes it in and out, another must be forward and reverse

    • @Hiiamthelren
      @Hiiamthelren 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      he literally showed you what they did though lol

    • @jkjoegunz
      @jkjoegunz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Idk if you saw it, but to the left of the steering wheel there was a lever for 'forward' and 'reverse.' The levers to the right of the steering wheel, starting with the one closest to the wheel, was to raise/lower the lift, the next one was the angle or pitch of the forks(raising or lowering the ends of the forks so they pitch up or down). I can only guess, since he didn't appear to use the 3rd or 4th levers, but I'd imagine the 3rd is for side shifting(where you slide the forks left of right). Not sure what the 4th one does... although on another youtube video they say it's to space out the forks(i.e. move them apart, or together). Although, it could be possible for extending the forks out, but idk how likely that is since I've never seen a sit down with extendable forks.

    • @roberts3423
      @roberts3423 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What would be nice is going to an actual course to learn about forklifts, watching videos on youtube does not teach you anything, there is more than just driving a forklift to think about, you need to know safety, what to do in different situations, how to check on maintenence on the forklift, know what it can carry and not and so on.

    • @toniodukes1948
      @toniodukes1948 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1. raise and lower
      2. tilt
      3. sideshift
      Only time it has the option to go in and out is usually a reach lift!

  • @derikroy5
    @derikroy5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    It's an old video but wth, I'll mention it anyway. That button on the second lever (from the left), your pitch lever, is to straighten your forks to true straight. That way there's no guesswork. You just tilt your forks all the way back, and as you tilt them back to the forward position, you keep your finger on that button. It will stop the forks when they are straight. It won't go any further when holding the button, so when it stops, that's when you know the forks are level. ✌️ Best of luck to anyone new out there. It's easier than you'd think.

      As someone with ADHD (or ADD depending on which DSM you're looking at) I must say it looks fun. It gets boring for me in forklift simulators and consruction simulator 2015 has a nice forklift I don't like that much after a while, like it doesn't keep my focus. But in real life that'd be a lot different.. I used to love just driving a toro lawn tractor and couldn't wait to cut the lawn when I was younger... so yeah. Easily amused a bit

      I started at my current job as a order picker, well one night the assistant manager told me the company was sending someone in to to do an audit on the all the forklifts and order pickers. He asked me “you know how to drive the sit downs? If not I’ll move them myself.” I told him “no” he showed me. Said “this is forward, this goes back, neutral, emergency brake down here, brake release here, got it.” I Just hopped on the machine and figured it out. Well the assistant manager has been on vacation so the fill in has been letting me practice. I’ve got it down pretty much, I just need to get better with the Inching brake. I picked an order last night and said “you know what I’m going to do, I’ll just leave the pallet on my picker and practice with the sit down.” Was super easy,

    I just remembered that I used to be terrified or forklifts in stores when I was a kid, like up through age 7 maybe or even 8 or 9? They scared me when they'd beep the horn and I didn't know why they were beeping (the reverse beep) - I'd start crying and asking my mother and or father if they were going to run us over. They'd of course assure me the forklift would never do such a thing but I kept it in my mind "Well what if"? What if the forklift driver gets mad and does this? This is probably because I'm autism spectrum, and also because I was abused at the least, psychologically, or emotionally whatever you want to call it, from a young age with borderline personality disorder in my family, mom's side and myself... Holy crap that was cathartic. Thank you for the video. How did you mount the camera in so many places? Or cameras?

    Currently have a busted ass 1998 Clark propane powered forklift at my job. Mostly use it to push semi trucks and other vehicles with compromised engines. The propane valve leaks. The hydraulic lines are leaking, the back rest is gone. The horn and lights don't work. No backup alarm. Have to adjust the forks manually. Just threw a starter in it last year the ring gear is fucking toast. Haven't changed the oil on it in about 3 years according to my company. The Guages do not work and the coolant tank stays empty. The wheels wobble and should have been replaced 10 years ago. But God damn it keeps on going.

    We have 15 minutes to unload a truck. I spend way too much time making sure my forks go in without puncturing the product. Other drivers go in, pick their pallet, back out, and park it in seconds. I take minutes 😭😭😭. Ive always driven standup trucks where we extend our forks and then pick up the pallet. I think it's a psychological thing. I get nervous when the truck is so close to product 🤦🏽‍♀️. I talk to myself out load and say...come on dummy just pick up the damn pallet 🤣

      Trayvon Banks most forklifts have a diagram on how much weight can rest of a certain center of gravity point you have to look for it and they are quite confusing to understand

    • @officergregorystevens5765
      @officergregorystevens5765 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience with a simulator, you CANT tilt the load toward you after initial contact, because for one, that'd make the bottom of the forks potentially hit the shelves or whatever you're getting the object off of. From the ground, as well, I'm not sure... I'd like to know where the center of gravity is and how it's heavy enough to be a counterweight for such heavy items that are so high up but I guess it's no miracle compared with things like tower cranes :p

    • @meters_and_madness
      @meters_and_madness 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole rear end of the forklift is a solid steel counterweight. Your average sized warehouse forklift, like the one in this video, weighs around 9,000lbs unloaded! They are most balanced when there is a heavy load on the front close to the floor, in this situation the fulcrum (center of gravity) is over the front wheels.
      An unloaded forklift is relatively unstable as most of its mass is on the back end. This is why if you drive a forklift up an incline you always go in reverse (and vice versa) to avoid tipping backwards. Forklifts brake with the front wheels opposite of the counterweight for the same reason... if you were driving in reverse and had brakes on the rear wheels it would flip.

      jonas holvoet he did tilt, after the load gets picked up you will see it tilt back as it just gets off the Racking as you are supposed to. You don't do it near the ground. Watch as it gets picked up it will lean back.

    • @TheSafetyStandard
      @TheSafetyStandard  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3
