I think Siskel is really overstating the violence in The Stepfather. I just don't think he wanted it to be a horror movie. Ebert is 100% on about how stupid the characters are. Especially the brother of the previous murder victim. He's going door to door, looking to confront someone he knows is a murderer, and he brings nothing to protect himself. I'm convinced he was only in the movie to fake out that he would be the hero, but come on, dude, are you really surprised that the guy who murdered your sister's family is perfectly happy to murder you too?
Actually he brought a gun with him, but Jerry surprises him and attacks him before he's able to use it. We see Ogilvy practicing with it at a firing range earlier in the film, and it's with this gun that Susan shoots Jerry at the end.

@@LumpyAdams I agree Terry's performance is the heart & soul of that movie, but I also think Joe Rubin does a good job directing and Westlake script has some bright spots, especially during the opening scenes. That said, the female actresses are atrocious and so is some of the dialogue, but I wouldn't want any one to miss out on Quinn because he really is that good.
@@TheNameisPlissken1981 That opening scene is legendary. I will give the filmmaker that, and I'd just simply recommend the movie to watch Terry because it's one of the best performances in a horror movie ever imo.
Roger totally failed at dispelling Gene's extremely valid point about the unnecessary, cliched Hollywood bullshit orchestra music in the background during a sports scene like in Hoosiers. Overrated film regardless of the legend supreme Gene Hackman.
"And at this point the movie executive hearing this story says: 'Sounds good, keep talking!'" lol
Didn't always agree with Roger, but man.. he could spot talent like none other. Terry O'Quinn is a phenomenal actor and he knew it.
He was good on Lost and in Primal Fear.
Not Enough to save pure Trash !
Hey wait a minute. The stepfather is considered a great horror film
By who
@@delbongo He's talking out of his ass. Though Terry is a beast actor.
@Idiot Rodger it couldn't decide between psychological Horror and Trash Horror. But it's campy and engaging I guess !
No its not. It's more of a cult classic. People who like junky horrors are into it but thats not saying much.
@@marksommers4179dude , it’s considered a classic nowadays. A lot of legitimate film critics praise the film.
Julien Temple's Absolute Beginners is mentioned in the opening of Altman's The Player:)
The Stepfather 👍
Dead or Alive 👍
Duet for One 👎
Hoosiers 👍
Hoosiers 👍🌟🌟🌟
Hoosiers came out in 1986 not 1987.
yeah, they reviewed it twice. Once when they first saw it in '86 then again in '87.

Siskel always hated violence in movies.
Yup.
he liked Robocop and that's way more violent than The Step Father

R.I.P. Rutgers Hauer, Robert Guillaume, and Alan Bates.

Duet for One was originally a two person play with Stephanie and her therapist.
They are wrong about Stepfather and Wanted Dead or Alive. Both are expertly made B-movies and really entertaining!
I agree about The Stepfather; it's a really creepy movie. I haven't seen Wanted: Dead or Alive.
At least Roger agreed with the consensus on Terry O'Quinn. His performance elevates it above the usual horror fare.
Stepfather is below average and it's only saving grace is Terry. Without him the movie is dogshit and "expertly made" is the stretch of all stretches.

Gene really shot an airball on Hoosiers. It has stood the test of time, his review hasn't.

Hoosiers is cow shit.
Wow, this was the most negative episode Ive seen, almost all 2 thumbs down and one thumb up
