    Love this video. I’ve been playing bass/guitar for about 3 years now and a while back, I turned a cello into an upright bass. Been thinking about doing some Johnny Cash covers. This seems like the perfect song to cover with my converted upright. Awesome tutorial! Keep it up!

    Thanks so much for sharing. I find that the more I know about music, the more difficult playing music becomes. When I was 14 years old, I knew nothing and it was very easy learning almost any tune on any intrument. I was not a great musician at that age, but good enough to get paid. I think that if one learns to play this tune by ear, as I remember doing playing bass, you just copy what you hear on the record. I remember thinking not to count out measures but merely beats and let the lead line or melody be the guide. This takes several listens and playing along with the recording and there your are!

    I just recently heard an interview with Johnny Cash's bassist from the original trio who said Johnny was not a great guitarist in the beginning. He had a funky rhythm approach. He also said none of them were that great of players out the door. I've seen the sheet music to Ring of Fire and the time signatures put me off. Hearing this recent interview - and being in bands myself - I wonder if the original sheet music was 4/4, but what we have now is sheet music not based on the original but Johnny's playing? I've played with guitarists who couldn't keep beat and were always throwing in or taking away beats, and I'd just go along with them. My last band was alt-country and there was one song our rhythm guitarist/singer/songwriter (ie it was his band, and there was me on upright, an electric guitarist and drummer) kept throwing in bars with 5 beats after the verses. We kept it, and while it would mess us up sometimes as we'd forget, it gave things a little pop. Don't know. Just thinking out loud as I revisit this video.

      Sorry for the late reply, this somehow slipped through the net and I’m sad it did because you reflect my thoughts on this exactly. The wonderful thing about it is that I think the unusual time signatures, mistake or not, really makes the song unique and is probably a big part of its success. Johnny cash may not have been the best musician in the traditional sense, and it’s quite clear he wasn’t, but the man was a genius storyteller and had a way with music that was uniquely his and very organic ♥️

    Watch a lot of upright channels, but you're one of my faves and I've subscribed. Just gonna say you avoid a pet peeve that turns me off of many videos: your hand positions. I see so many bass guitarists who play upright with the same hand positions as an electric bass. Its not the same. Their right hand is off. They have no clue about right hand muting as their hand comes directly perpendicular to the strings and they use nothing but their fingers. Their left hand is wrapped around the bass, thumb showing, with the fingers far from the fretboard and twisted up at little angles, not holding the famous upright bass left hand double v hand position. This might sound arrogant, but I played electric bass for years. I switched 100% to upright and once I learned proper hand positioning (and it was a pain to relearn) my playing tremendously improved, and I felt more in control of what I was doing. Its a little thing I know.

      Thank you ♥️ hand position is so important, so it’s honestly nice you noticed. Keep rockin’ man, so glad you’re enjoying the vids! 🎵

    I think the timing and quick chord changes just come from the simplicity of guitar. Going between chords with that Johnny Cash/Carter Family strumming style is quite simple.
    Bass Note, Down Strum, four times is the four beats and whole pattern. Though from there you can add in more strums to fill in the space and give it a groove. Strumming like that makes the fast chord changes a piece of cake.

    I'm just getting started
    what is the best bass brand, or just get a good 3/4 plywood, with gut strings?

    • @BamboozleHQ
      @BamboozleHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely a personal thing. Dukes make fantastic affordable bases, mines a Strunal Custom, they make great basses too, and some good starter ones and Thomann ones aren’t too bad either.

    • @BamboozleHQ
      @BamboozleHQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      String wise though, I’d always recommend Rotosounds or Innovation Rockabilly black or reds. Guts struggle to hold their tone, so not ideal if you want to be a little bit musical.
