PHIL HARE IS THE BAD DAD OF DADGAD

  • Phil Hare gives his unique take on the relative merits of the much-used/abused acoustic guitar tuning DADGAD. Aided and abetted, it seems by plentiful levels of Merlot and the odd smoke! The guitar played here is a 'Catfish Keith Ragtime' (made by UK luthier Tony Revell in 1994) which blends in well with the conservatory backdrop!

So often on You Tube guitar tutorials the presenters get the talking bit wrong, pointing out very s-l-o-w-l-y what we can already see them doing. This is so refreshing: an excellent introduction for the intermediate or advanced player The commentary and the playing are equally informative, equally eloquent. And he's a dude. Great job.

This video continues to inspire me to play in dadgad. I have a friend that stays in standard tuning and every time I pass my guitar to her, she gets frustrated and wants standard tuning. Hopefully I’ll get her to enjoy dadgad as much as I do.

Hi Phil - I'm a lifelong fan of Phil Keaggy and a new fan and student of yours. What got my immediate attention in this amazing video was your approach to concept - natural. I'm self taught and haven't begun to read music yet (outside of chords and what-not). Everything made perfect sense to me. Thanks much for the enlightenment.

Thanks for the helpful hints. When I first heard Davey Graham playing the traditional
Irish tune - 'She moved through the Fair' - which was the first tune/song ever recorded in dadgad - I knew I had to learn this tuning which he introduced to the music World. It's a pity that other musicians who later borrowed this tuning - got all the kudos whilst Davey himself was more or less forgotten. Your lesson here is of great help and appreciate your uploading. 'Cheers'.

Came in here from a "Kashmir" tutorial. Was a pleasure to listen to your "flight around the chimney" (if I may call it so). I love celtic sounds.
You got it man to bring up this mood. Great inspiration!
And you made me smile at 3:12. I think it would be fun to have a beer with you. Or two per haps... ;-)
And at least - I like your voice. You could be a narrator or a voice actor or a speaker for an audio book. Or a singer!!!
Are you to hear as a singer somewhere in the web? I'm sure you're a wonderful singer.
    Cheers from Berlin!

Love the way you play, but as someone else pointed out, don't sell DADGAD short with the "don't strum." I'm not much of a finger picker but I love the tuning as a rhythm guitar, both as a solo and in an electric band It has such great full chords, with all the suspensions effortlessly creeping in. And it's a great lead instrument even with a pick.

This is the guitar video I've been looking for, but didn't know it existed. Just got into it a couple days ago, and the guitar will show you. DADGAD is me, why has it taken me 50 years to find out, but I found out. I've always had this weird style, and went through a very pleasurable period of learning in open D/slide, and this feels like a melding of standard of standard and open tuning. I don't know that I'l ever tune my guitar back, or maybe not for a long time...

Weird. I had my acoustic in my hands, just tuned from D to DADGAD, and found the scale mentioned here, and then no sooner than I strummed a chord the Mr. Hare says "Don't strum it!" That aside, a nice intro to the concept of getting the most out of DADGAD. Informative vid. Thanks for posting it.

I suppose my favourite artists are Steely Dan (Acoustic? LOL), John Martyn, Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell, Leon Rosselson etc and, if pushed, I probably listen to more jazz than anything else.

Great stuff mate! The reason I said 'don't strum it' really was to try and encourage people to use the open-strings to gain greater sonic 'output' from the voicings. Fingerstyle playing is better for this, whereas 'block-strumming' (not what you were doing per se) tends to mask this option. Also, I'd had about 6 glasses of wine when I did that vid!
