Great video! I’m a genetic counseling grad student. Hoping to see expanded carrier screening made more universal soon (as ethnic based screening can be incomplete or increase inequities)

Definitely! We’ve seen a huge growth in the availability of commercial genetic screening so I think that’s likely to happen.

So I have a question is genetic screening the same as fragile x screening if not what is the different ? Should we get tested for both ? I like to be prepared !

When we first started our family, carrier screening was really expensive and not covered by my insurance if there wasn't a known family history. I actually wish I had done it though! I got 23andMe as a gift and did it for fun during my 3rd and last pregnancy and found out that I was a carrier of both Cystic Fibrosis and congenital deafness. At his point it didn't matter and my husband is unlikely to be a carrier (especially since all 3 of our kids don't have these diseases), but had I known that we probably would have done a lot more before starting our family. Or at least have my husband do 23andMe too! Should we look into carrier screening for our kids now or just give them the heads up as they are older and start making life decisions?

Would you suggest this even more for a 35.5yr old thinking of adding one more to her family? Ive never been offered this but have brought up concerns regarding my age and birth defects and chromosomal issues. I know these two are different. I never thought I would be 35.5 and thinking of getting pregnant so have so many questions!

Carrier screening does not change with age. This are genes you have from your parents and does not change with your lifetime. It you’re thinking of aneuploidy screening, which are new genetic problems in an offspring, those increase with age and I will cover that in the next video.

This is always a weird thing for me because it feels ablest. Though also it's fair to want to know if you have a high chance of having a complex pregnancy. It's just... Complicated

Interesting thought. I don’t consider avoiding preventable suffering or disease ablest.
