From what I hear , it was a way to throw norfleet off. Norfleet thought he had more time before his match and they surprised him with the forfeit ... strategy obviously didn’t work tho. Cuz even if zahid pinned their back up , they were hoping to have a win from conel as well by throwing off norfleet.
I believe they did have a back up. But I could be wrong, I was at the dual and while they presented the competitors I believe they presented two guys for Penn State at 149 and 184.

If Rasheed was not 100% then hes not ready to be out there against Zahid. Its early in the season and theres a long way to go so you have to stay smart and look at the big picture instead of short sided risks. Only option would be Edsell and I'm sure they weighed it out carefully. He could have been sick and they had no choice in the end, but to try a mind game strategy and unfortunately it didn't work. I'm sure they also knew it was going to be close and certain guys would have to step up big in order to get it done and it just didnt go PSU's way. It was a 1 pt loss. Its not like they got their butts kicked. Gotta give credit to ASU because they did everything they had to in order to eek out that win. Also, I forget where is Mason Manville this year? He would have been perfect to face Valencia and keep it within reason or who knows maybe even pull out a victory.

The backup failed skin checks, Rasheed is still not 100% and no reason to try and win a meaningless dual meet and get him hurt worse. Look at what happend to Suriano in 2017, he breaks his ankle in a dual meet for no reason (PSU was well and ahead the best team in the country) misses post season. McCutchen in 2016, wrestles Okie State with an already injured legs, kid illegally attacks it, McCutchen is injured for the rest of the post season. Dual meets are meaningless outside the Big10 for Big Ten teams. For those of you saying Beard and Brooks should come out of redshirt, think back to 2015. All the redshirts PSU didn't burn led to a Four year run, Bo and Nolf both took losses in their redshirt years, burn them that year and they don't have the dominate 5th years they had.
I have to respect Coach Sanderson's decision / hopefully the dual matches remain important ,& we don't get an NBA-like regular season/ Personally I thought it would have been a good idea for Hall to wrestle Zahid one more time/ I see the pros & cons, but I'm thinking it helps prepare Hall, win or lose/ However Rivera wrestled up last year & it seem to throw him off for the rest of the season/ Hall & PSU are shooting for an undefeated national title & it' wasn't there decision that Valencia moved up/ I gotta feeling PSU will recover /!

I was at the match. Penn St weighed in two wrestlers at 184, Rasheed and Edsell. It’s my feeling that it was a combination of factors leading to the decision to forfeit. Neither of their wrestlers are any match for Zahid. Secondly they thought they would win at 97 and Hwt to take the match, so no need to risk being embarrassed at 84.
I hate forfeits - I really don't understand why you would just Give a team six points. I mean Valencia would likely win anyway, but make him Earn it. My "best guess" is that Sanderson knew that Valencia would likely pin Edsell and get 6 pts anyway, so why not forfeit and hopefully catch the 197 'off guard'.. almost like "Icing the kicker" in the NFL. I don't agree with it (and obviously it didn't work), but that's about the only thing I can come up with.

That’s one of the great things about wrestling and combat sports in general; the underdog rises to the occasion for something bigger than himself. When I was coaching HS I once sent a slightly chubby, farm boy, 500 wrestler out against a returning state champ. He wrestled his heart out and held the match to a 4 point spread and we won the dual because of it. It was my favorite coaching memory of all time.
I agree this was planned. It was planned because they wanted to catch Arizona States 194 Kordell Norfleet off guard. Wrestling is a huge mind game and things like this can mess with the mind when you think you might have 7 minutes to warm up.

Used to think that college and Olympic wrestling was king. I didn't realize that WWE Wrestling is considered to be the absolute pinnacle of the sport. Aboit 3 years ago, I met Cael Sanderseon and a former Olympic wrestler and they suggested that WWE wrestlers, for the most part, are the greatest athletes in the world. Apparently, this is quite obvious to some but I was a bit surprised when the US Olympic Committee for wrestling voted not to allow WWE wrestlers the opportunity for tryouts as "they would dominate our wrestlers and that's not good for the sport" according to USA Wrestling President. Ravannack suggested"the fact that our wrestlers dress up in those silly onesies surely doesn't help matters."
