Finally, my OBT husbandry video. There seem to be a lot of folks getting these lately! I honestly thought that I had done one a while ago, but apparently not.
Fun fact: OBT's are physically dull colored, the orange color is emitted from their rage. /s
Anyway, another great vid. I hear they're also known to teleport from how fast they are.

I unpacked my obt sling today. It was my first old world and true to form it was fast. The second the paper towel was unwrapped it bolted across my bathtub. Thankfully I stayed calm through the whole ordeal. You have to have great respect for the animals and as stated in the video comfort level is everything.

Sells super docile Poecilotheria Regalis with a lock on the enclosure out of fear of it escaping and getting to my reptiles.......... 2 years later gets an OBT... now just slides the lid off and slowly drops smaller enclosure into the bigger enclosure, slaps the lid closed and lets it rehouse itself every time 😬
One thing I've learned recently is that anxiety dulls my reaction time. I find that if I'm shaking or worried I cause problems. Like being to forceful and causing bolts. I just got done rehousing my OBT for my 3rd time and although I'm no pro yet I am much more comfortable than I was when it was smaller.
Great point! If you get all amped up, it can totally impact your ability to think quickly and inhibit your reaction times. So glad to hear that the rehousing went well!
Funny story. My first T was an OBT. I had no idea what I was getting and the pet store didn't tell me how agressive it is. I put it in it's enclosure and went to bed. The next morning I got up to make some coffee and turned on the light and the OBT was climbing up the wall. I just grabbed a cup and put it over the T and caught it and put it back in it's enclosure. I probably was close to being bitten and really had no idea how bad the bite was. Always good to do your homework before buying any T. Thank you for this video and getting the word out there that this is not a beginner species. That was. A long time ago and I just got another OBT but this time I am more experienced and know how dangerous it is.
Hi, Brian! That is an awesome story. Honestly, a lot of people pick these up and have no idea about the attitudes and bites. Pet stores sell them, and folks just assume they are like rose hairs. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

just wanted to thank you for all the info and rehouse videos you make. Had to rehouse my OBT slings lately (they were my first old world tarantulas I had to rehouse) and did not even get nervous thanks to all the information you give and the techniques I could practice before.

Great video Tom as all your are! I have to say my OBTs were my 3rd and 4Th T’S I had a Pink Toe for my first then a Vietnam Blue for 2nd then the 2 OBTs now I own 10 T’S and I have always used respect towards them I will say you taught me so much and transfers are always done with the catch cups with holes and cardboard all your tricks so no chance for escape I actually have just did my 3 rd rehouse on the OBTs and now both are in a medium round critter keeper with lots of room for growth so they will be good for a while I thank you everyday as you taught me so much !!

Man, every time I look through your videos, Tom, I find something else useful and interesting. I love this species, too. So beautiful! They do get a “bad rap” (not completely deserved, but certainly partially! :-D).
LOVE the idea of keeping them semi-arboreally. It really helps them to feel more secure, I think, when they have some depth to retreat to. Great video!
I'm taking that leap into advanced keeping and I'm feeling really good about it. I just got an OBT sling the size of my fingernail half an hour ago! It's hard not to want one of these guys, temper aside, they look like a gold coin come to life, and I'm looking forward to watching my little one grow up.

Great vid as usual! I've kept Ts for 10 years now and still don't feel ready for an OBT! I sure love watching other keepers' videos, though.
A lot of folks have no interest in them, as they can be a huge hassle. I have to admit that I lucked out with mine; she is quite calm and has never given me an issue (well, except when she thought I was a cricket and almost escaped. haha). :)
@@TomsBigSpiders I only ended up w OW's cuz I bought out a huge collection, but didn't want the OW's. But the people wanted me to take them ALL cuz they were having a newborn and wanted ZERO T's. So they basically threw them in for free. Just a Stout Leg Baboon and Cameroon Red (both pet holes that I couldn't even see if they were alive). Maybe a few others, I can't remember, but the OBT's and a P Metallica came later. The OBT's were the only one's that made me nervous even though the Blue Sapphire also nested at the top. It just seemed so docile. For me, the burrowers were just big, slow and gentle.
Now Many people say that the OBT is a "good" 1st OW. I disagree because of the speed and venom potency, and I know that you do also. But I found them to be FAR more int. than the "safer" which I sold off, LOL. My thinking is there's a trade off between having something safe but very boring vs something that you actually like.
Yet another excellent video! Thanks! I remember stocking them in the shop I worked at. We had all sorts of nick names for them (the obt's)! Too bad most pet shops get bad reps... us guys knew every scientific name, place of origin and husbandry notes off the bat! We kept ours perfectly. I guess some shops do keep them poorly! But I was the GOOD Pet shop with proper cages and labels! Thanks again for the video!
That's fantastic that you guys knew what you were doing. It's a shame the good shops go unrecognized as many do not take care of them correctly. I know there are good ones (and good folks like you!) out there! I just wish there were more like that.

Rewatching this as I have an OBT rehouse coming up soon, and that's so interesting about the orange color = bold! I did notice she was sitting out looking all pleased a lot more after she molted from this kind of orangey-tan color and now is more neon orange with the tiger butt markings.

Tom Moran funny you should say that because my slings have house themselves slightly different from one another. some have hidden under the cork bark with minimal webbing and couple have webbed up the side with loads of webbing using dirt in the webb bit like a pokie lol all the setups are identical they have chose to do it that way 👍

Tom Moran I keep B.Auratum and Emilia, N.Chromatus, GBB, C.Chicoi (bicolor?) P.Pulcher (2) and A.Geniculata, 7f and a sling. Have raised 150 Vagans too, that was intens lol
I know, would love to go to a P.Metallica for example, your comment about being comfy at all transfers really made me think im almost there :) Id like to add that your blog on humidity and not to panic about it gave me a lot off piece of mind as a keeper (!) and also brought me to your channel. Ah, the OBT. My first and only tarantula so far. Got my adult female +/- for a month now, I've done two transfers and both went smoothly so I'm quite happy.

Wacky Mel0n as long as you study and do homework on an animal you want to keep as well as being extremely cautious and prepared I don’t see the harm. However hands on experience is where success and failure happens. Every species and every species that are the same are different in temperament.
Nice vid! Mine has never reared that I can recall. Put it straight into med critter keeper with pvc t pipe and foliage and she webbed the whole inside of pipe and attached foliage to it as well. She comes out to groom and def never has issues eating. Will say very freaking fast tho!! Gorgeous too!
Hey, Roy! This female has never given me any trouble. And older female I had was pretty nasty. They can vary in temperament from specimen to specimen. In some cases, I think they are extra mean because people don't give them enough room. Thanks so much, bud!

Once you get some experience and get your husbandry down, I think that you will find that they are quite manageable. Just be sure to give them enclosures with extra height so that they don't web to the top. That helps a lot.

Awesome detailed care video. Your sling care sheet I got from FearNotTarantulas has helped get all my Ts safely out of the Sling stage. Thanks much for making that care sheet
So both times I got into the hobby I started with a OBT lol ( about 9 years ago I started collecting Ts but had to move and was not able to keep them, I just started up again in march this year.) I figured if I can handle this one ill be good. I never been fearful of them but all my old worlds get much respect, well all I have is Baboons and Pokies so I guess that's a must!
This time around I think I got a bold one its always out unless molting or eating.

A lot of folks seem to jump right in with them without issue, which is why I didn't dwell on the "this is not a good beginner" aspect of it. I think folks need to make their own informed decisions. I've been noticing that folks who start with baboons and pokies seem to be much more cautious keepers overall. It comes with the territory. Thanks again!
Ive found that if you give it several inches of substrate(5" or so) it will burrow and not make so much webbing above the surface which cancels out some of the craziness...Kind of like what you mentioned with the C.lividus before...webbing on top when you open it you are invading their home thus they can tend to get flighty or defensive...I also agree def one of the species i give ample room to minimize rehousings...When i rehoused mine recently it was calm as could be till i was prodding for pictures then it bolted out on me...which isnt as bad once you know what to do and are able to keep calm def nothing has been as heart racing as my H.pulchripes escaping the first time lol but when my obt bolted it was all run and no defense...It wasnt until i pulled the enclosure back out to show someone the set up and i blew thru the side a bit to get it to reposition for a pic that it went bonkers and it was def a show thankfully i had the lid on the enclosure because it literally bounced off the top lol...I personally never do any old world rehousings when my children are here even as tiny slings or even new world for that matter...Feedings is ok i keep a close eye but thats a whole dif ball game than a rehousing...Are you sure your tarantulas dont talk to you? Hahaha ...great video
Awesome points all around, bud! This is one of these species that I think could show fossorial, terrestrial, or arboreal tendencies depending on the specimen. I've kept three of them, and each one did something different with its surroundings. I had one that burrowed and did very little webbing on the surface. The female I got as a juvenile took residence under a piece of corkbark and webbed itself a big top over that. The one featured in most of this video went up and webbed the snot out of its enclosure and rarely touched the ground. Of all the spiders I keep, these may show the most flexibility in how they choose to set up house. And I agree completely that folks that have issues with their likely haven't given them enough space. I've seen videos of these small, shallow enclosures that leave the spider little room when opened. This triggers its defensiveness. Enclosure size and depth are definitely key to a happy orange bitey thing. hahaha. Thanks, bud!
I def agree...some would not i know a guy who says all baboons need this and this if not your keeping them wrong but its one of those see how they act type deals...i noticed mine would web at the bottom of cork and it made a nice den down there with dirt etc so i offered it and i dont think it has necessarily dug down and made a huge burrow in its new enclosure but it deff has a nice den going on...Its same with M.balfouri i offered mine plenty of digging space in its first 2 enclosures never dug just made a web den under cork bark and that was it so its newest enclosure which will be final unless its female and gets a more display style enclosure has much less substrate and it continued to do the same it made a nice den under the bark and webbed the top all around it and the ground and thats it and i actually see it out quite often now which is wonderful before i only got shots inside its den....Some people are very stick to this with the care especially people who feel they are more educated than others but if you offer a species what is suggested as the norm and it doesnt take to it i see no problem in adjusting to its personality

I do, too! I lost a female years ago, and I was totally bummed. I have a feeling that she came to me sick, as all three spiders I got from this one dealer died within weeks of each other under the same circumstances. As these guys are supposed to be bullet proof, it shook my confidence a bit. Everyone seems to have a bad luck species. I think a lot of time, it's just bad luck. You obviously know what you're doing, so it's not the husbandry. Thanks, bud!

Two words I never thought I would see in the same sentences are OBT and beginners.
Having said that there are an awful lot of beginners who are sold OBTs by unscrupulous people or those who just lack the awareness that they are not really suitable for beginners.
Once they own an OBT, it is all very well to criticise them for buying it, but it still needs to be taken care of.
Your video does a wonderful job of helping those people who, by whatever means, find themselves in that situation.
I agree that there are a lot of factors that can contribute to the problem. In some cases, folks don't appreciate how much of a handful they can be and pick one up in spite of their ability level and what they've read. As someone pointed out in another comment, they are sometimes sent as freebies to unsuspecting keepers. And for several years, if you searched up "best beginner tarantulas", one of the top list named the OBT as a great beginner due to its hardiness. How many people read THAT and picked one up? All great points...thanks so much!

OBT's deserve a lot of respect. take some advice, i would keep them in a more arboreal enclosure and set it up for a terrestrial set up . Because that way when you do need to change the water or clean your not right on top of the OBT. trust me this will make you feel better and the T will feel safer and less likely to give you any problems. Hi, Tim! I agree completely. Giving them that extra room, especially some depth to the enclosure, is key. Iv'e noticed that folks that have nasty specimens usually have them in smaller containers with less room. I've always given mine plenty of space, and they are usually fine. Thanks, bud!

Pre-plague, I was at a reptile expo and I ran into my local tarantula dealers. I see them often enough that they know me and vice versa, so I asked them what they would recommend, and they recommended the OBT (I'd been buying tarantulas from them for around two years before they recommended this). I wasn't super sure about it because, I mean, OBT, but I remembered you talking about how to raise them fossorrially (not in this video, I don't think, but this is the OBT video so it's relevant), so I did that with my OBT.
I did her first tank transfer today, and I was super stressed out about it, but she was super calm! A little bit of confusion when it came to moving her over, but no threat posture, no slapping, none of that; just a chill little OBT moving from one tank to another.
IDK if I just have a chill OBT and I got lucky, or if raising it fossorially actually helped, but I wanted to give you a heads up that your advice helped a lot. :)
I'm about to post a new video up with this girl getting a rehouse, and she was just fine. I have a chill one, too. Although I DO believe that there are more defensive ones out there, I also think that some people don't give them the room that they need to be chill spiders. Give them room to dig if they want to or room for webbing up top, and they'll be just fine. Personally, I love this species. Glad to hear that your rehousing went well, too!

I got a King baboon sling that must of been misslabelled as he/she is an Obt. Dark or brown colour form I think. He's called Cheeto & i love him so much I've got myself a Red colour form grown on sling. She is beautiful, I named her Bunny.
As they are babies I haven't seen any defensive behaviour. I admire obt's for their looks, not reputation.

this is my first old world and only been in the hobby a few months but i keep large snakes and do alot of rescues mainly the bitey ones as well as i keep parrots. So i wasnt at all indimidated by the speed and i got a 3" juvie. She wasnt hard at all to rehouse and is almost always out rarely hides and never gives me a threat display i love her

Tom Moran picked up an OBT sling (appx 1”) along with a few other things that im very excited about 🤙🏼. Already falling in love with the OBT though, cannot wait to see him/her grow!
A big part of the problem seems to be that these guys are commonly given away as freebies. I didn't have a say in the matter when I got mine, and I'm still technically a beginner especially compared to you or a lot of other keepers. It just kind of showed up in the shipping box as a surprise.
That's an excellent point. An OBT is in no way an appropriate freebie unless a choice is given at the time of purchase (I know some places will let you pick between a few options). Just blindly sending a keeper an OBT who didn't specifically order one is pretty ridiculous in my book.
Oh boy this is what happened to us! Granted, we were buying two YA P. Metallicas at an expo and could have declined the freebie. When we got it home we were like, that guy just gave us a baby psychopath!

Just watched this video and it is so true about how fast it is, my son has one prob a very young sub adult anyway hadn't seen it on god knows how long it hadn't been eating this went on way longer than a ore molt so son decided to dig it out eventually found it he gave it a few nudges not a flinch thought it was dead next thing it was out the enclosure jumped off the table and ran across the floor before I could jump on the chair I was sitting on haha, hunted ages to find the thing finally got it then had a hassle trying to get it back into the enclosure certainly got the heart thumping that day I can tell you lol x
Oh wow, Mary...that sounds like a nightmare! It's funny, as someone shared a similar experience with me. He thought his was dead, and it sprang up, bit him, and ran away. Very interesting (although horrifying to consider!). I'm glad that it all ended well for you. :)
@@TomsBigSpiders thankfully none of us did get get bitten but I was terrified incase it got out the room as I also have 3 cats who are barred from the t room we ended up discussing who would come off worse if the cats had encountered the obt lol
@@marymcghee3441 Well, the two cat vs. OBT stories I hear of ended up with cats that were in excruciating pain (both lived) and two dead OBTs. lol
I have an OBT after spending 7 months in the hobby...I wanted to advance myself earlier so I wanted to give them a shot...I heard these Ts can make you cry badly if bitten due to their potent venom but in past when I was younger I have had some experience raising spiders (true spiders of course), I always have seen Ts as type of spiders which were evil but thanks to my friend Jon3800 he helped me alot with the enough confidence to get used to Ts as well..I agree with the fact you shouldn't do plenty of transfer so when you do one just give them enough space that you will not have to do for at least some years. I might put her in the kritter cage as you mentioned in video just because it has door on lid that you can easily shut down the door if you see the OBT is trying escape attempt. Last thing I want from these guys is being bitten because I have heard that bite from this species will last pretty long..there are people that had the pain of bite for nearly a month so I would say these are more than just defensive species..Mine go on threat posture the moment I would come near her...I can't imagine what she would do if I bother opening the lid and interact..But I'll eventually have to feed her and water so I'll need to take those risks in order to keep this little girl alive. What you could actually do is use the syringe by inserting it through the ventilation hole, I would advice less interaction with these species less as possible, so I would say just open when you really have to when feeding or transferring. You ever got bitten by these Tom?

I just got my first juvenile and its honestly not that bad. It will retreat first more than anything and my rehouse went smooth. They quick tho...catch cup for sure..

personally, after being into ts for a couple years, Im one of those that dont bother anymore keeping them nor N incei : toó fast and unpredictable to be worth thw pretty colors. I'll take p muticus, c darlingi or any other mean fossorial any day of the week.

Yeah, the fossorial species are normally no problem whatsoever. You open their enclosures and they just bolt down into their burrows. Even during transfers, I've found them to be more scared and cowering than defensive. It's funny that you mention the H. incei, as that is one of the only species to bolt on me and give me trouble during a rehousing. Little buggers are FAST! hahaha Thanks again!

I heard about folks trying communals with them, but many of them seem to end with a couple really fat spiders. I had considered trying one, but I wasn't able to find enough examples of successful ones to push me to trying it.

I would love one of these someday, but I know I am not ready for it yet. My collection only contains NW Tarantulas for now. Anything that can put me in the hospital is not something I want to learn with.
I think everyone is different in terms of what they are comfortable with, and it's up to the individual to determine what he/she is ready for. I do think that many beginners snatch them up for the "thrill", and that's not a good idea. They can be handful, and you don't want to make a mistake with one.

I had an OBT: she was a Craigslist rescue and the shiest T I had; actually only saw her twice in about 5 months. Conversely, my B. vagans was the feistiest and most defensive T in my collection...he would dash out and throw a threat pose if you merely touched his tank. Though there are certainly species-specific traits, one can never assign a blanket statement to T's...or anything else in general! ;) That said, y'all have me thinking twice about trying an OBT again. ;)
Hi, Laura! Temperament really does vary from specimen to specimen. My OBT is very shy and laid back. Obviously, mine's not the norm, but there are always exceptions. :) Get one again! haha
How do u rescue a tarantula? they live in room temperatures and eat like 3 times a year.
I've only had 2 of these (w/out any issues), and sold these as semi-adults. I'm NO expert at all, but since some of these tend to make their nests right at the top of whatever enclosure, I always took them outside ANY time was opened the cage...Re-housing, feeding, etc. Just in case they bolted. I few time they bolted down the down the outside of the cage but I red-directed them back in w a brush.
This is about the LAST species you want loose in the house, esp if you have kids.
I've been lucky in that mine have all stayed towards the bottom (but I give them plenty of height). Yeah, you don't want one of these loose in the house. Thanks!
Very temperamental species as expected after acquiring. Even still can’t help but admire the beauty! Mine will stare you down and throw a threat posture just shining a light or slap at its webbing because of cricket is moving underneath! Surprisingly refuses to use the burrow/hide I placed and webbed up the tip corner right under the lid which makes any care a bit risky.
They really are absolutely stunning. I LOVE orange spiders and arachnids. Mine is calm as can be, so I totally lucked out! haha
Tom Moran is there multiple color forms as with other species some I see are more orange others are more golden yellow
The two recognized color forms are brown (or the original color form) and the orange ones. I have seen different shades, and I wondered if it was just different shades from the same sac.

I got one after a few new worlds, but mine is mostly cowardly. I haven’t seen a threat posture, but then again she’s fairly small still (3” or so), but otherwise not much of an issue. I keep only three OWs, though, because of my dog and cat.

I just got my first ow an obt and I’m not scared of it but it does make me a little anxious when opening the enclosure but so far it has been very docile as far as it has hid everytime I have opened or went near the enclosure
If you give it a deep enough container, a place to hide, and some anchor points, it should retreat when you open the enclosure. My adult female is a total sweetheart...there are some calmer ones out there.
Tom Moran mine is only about an inch but I put it in a larger enclosure than I had it in and haven’t had a problem since it’s retreats everytime I open the enclosure

My OBT was across the counter before I could even blink when feeding once. They are no joke but I learned my lesson lol. When I would feed him he would just hang and wait for the cricket. This time I sprayed his habitat before and he was gone. I swear we sat and looked at each other for 30 minutes before I got the nerve to catch him. 😵😖

Quick question for you Tom. I've had my OBT for about a year now and rehoused her for the 2nd time a month ago. In her first enclosure she was a prolific webber/burrower and started webbing in just a few days of introducing her to that enclosure. For the second enclosure she has barely webbed at all and hangs out in the open by either walking around or in the upper corners of the enclosure in a hiding position. Is it just taking her longer to acclimate to the new enclosure?
Hello! When I rehoused mine the last time, she did the same thing, and it took her quite a while to settle in and to start webbing things up. What size is yours? Does she have cover and anchor points? Mine probably could have used more.
@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks for the quick response Tom! Yes the new enclosure has plenty of anchor points, but no actual hide as of right now. I figured the lack of a hide would encourage her to start webbing or burrowing. I'd estimate her body length size at 1.5" and legspan size of 3".
@@Tacomaholic That could be the issue right there. I've found that when they don't have a place to hide from the get go, it sometimes takes them longer to settle in. It's like when folks don't give fossorial species a hide and starter burrow, and expect them to dig. Many of them will take weeks to settle in before they feel comfortable enough to start construction. That could be the issue. It will eventually settle down and start webbing, but it just might take it longer to do so. Hope that helps!

Hi Tom. I have an obt that I purchased 1.5 weeks ago as part of a collection. She had went through molt a few days before I got her, and sealed herself away. I have been binge listening to you for weeks, I know I shouldn't dig her up to check on her. I know I have heard you say pre molt can last forever but what about post molt? My g. Pulchripes molted last weekend and is out and about. I have yet to see my obt...should I be worried yet?. I appreciate it. My favorite teacher.
Hey, Dennis! Depending on how large she is, it can take them several weeks to be ready to eat again. Even slings can sometimes take a couple weeks to show that they are hungry. If she is buried deep and doesn't surface for four weeks, then you might want to carefully check on her. In that case, I would carefully open a small hole to her burrow and leave a prekilled prey item at the top (do NOT drop in a live item). Good luck!

I've had two Brachypelmas and an A. Chalcodes for a few months and I went ahead and bought an OBT. I've had it for 2 years now and haven't had any issues. The stigma around it is honestly ridiculous. Don't be stupid and it's extremely hard to get bitten, you almost have to be trying imo. I've had my share of scares and almost an escape but that's part of the learning process. If you feel confident about yourself, get one. Easy as that
I got one early as well, and mine actually turned out to be very calm. I do believe that there is a lot of unnecessary hype surrounding this species, and many people are able to successfully jump right in with them. That said, I interact with a lot of beginners, and many are not informed or "smart" about how they work with their spiders. Heck, many come into the hobby thinking that all tarantula bites are no worse than bee stings and have no idea about Old World species having more potent (and painful) venom. I agree completely that it's up to the keeper to decide if he/she is ready for one.

Im a beginner and i have a obt a singapore blue and red knee my red knee is a female adult, my obt and singapore blue are both juveniles. But i dont touch or get my obt or blue out at all as i know its speed and defensiveness

I have a 8cm DLS OBT (my third OW) and I replicated what you did in your tank but I’m being hounded by others to add more substrate to prevent injuries. I’m adding some forest branches and reptile vines for anchor points. My idea was to let it web.Your input will be greatly appreciated.
Hello, Timur! Who is hounding you? There are about 3-4 inches in this. The idea is to set them up in enclosure that offer more height so that you aren't crowding them. Some will use the term "semi-arboreal." That means that the enclosure offers more height than a terrestrial enclosure, but not as much as an arboreal (to avoid damage should they climb and fall). I didn't put more substrate in because mine hasn't burrowed in year, even when given the depth to do so. How tall is your enclosure? This one is about 9" with 3" of substrate. Let me know, and we can take it from there.
@@TomsBigSpiders Hi Tom, Thanks for replying. My enclosure is an exo-terra faunarium 24.5 x 37 x 22cm. I've put in about 3inches of eco-earth substrate too and putting in some cork bark and a coconut hide. I have a plastic skull hide (because of her attitude!) in there now but a bit worried she might fall and hurt herself on that. I'm also putting into some exo-terra forest branches for her to web over. Does this sound like a good set up? She is approximately 7-8cm LS
I honestly hated spiders in general, but ever since I started watching exotic lair I just can't keep my eyes off the OBT. They're so beautiful

Great vid! Yep super tip housing them in a taller container. One thing I have noticed is they can be a bit fussy sometimes and decided to make a home in wierd places! Generally though give them somewhere to hide and enough to burrow in and you are fine.
One housing tip I used and worked until I had to poke the OBT out was you can use cork bark tubes on thier sides...mine lived inside one for at least three moults but of course became a complete recluse. Hoping my big one moults soon and can sex. The Tete is getting a re-house this week! (will do a vid).
p.s and always rehouse in a tall sided box. Some T's I dont bother but an OBT always need that extra bit of care.

Hi, Nick. They do not. I know several keepers that use a closet. You just want to make sure it doesn't get too stuffy in there.
I think the biggest thing folks need to ask themselves is do you have experience with other fast moving dangerous critters . If you have that experience and you treat the OBT like its gonna bite you every time , and you take the correct precautions . Your going to be less anxious and pretty much just shrug off its defensive behavior as just settle down little one . Its when your legit anxious and or fearful of a critter that you get into trouble .

In my experience, P.murinus are just defensive inside it enclosure (more like very defensive of their "territory") .I've seen they calm down when they are out.
Yeah, I think their legendary attitudes are due to defensiveness of having their personal space threatened. When out, they usually bolt.

They DO make gloves that are supposed to protect against knives an sharps (I only know because a keeper was thinking of buying some to work with this OBT haha), but I'm not sure if they would work!
Is it common for a sling to start showing color around 1.25"? Mine was just showing some brown-orange then, and is now at 1.5" (max) a burnt orange. My OBT from years ago would attack and bite ANYTHING in the cage, so to clean we used wooden chopsticks for safety (and got to see fang marks). :)
Some show color earlier than others. I think mine started to show some color around the 1.5" mark or so. Yeah, they can be quite the little brats. The fang marks on the chopsticks must have been something! :)

I'm going to try to get a couple brown OBTs. They used to be common in the hobby, but orange trumps brown for desirability, so they're more difficult to find now.
Yeah, I'll be keeping mine semi-arboreally from this point forward, but they really do adapt to anything. Such a cool species. It's a shame, as I've heard a lot of veteran hobbyists say that they are boring and overrated. I definitely do NOT agree...

Yeah she was a trooper. I'm pretty sure she was a she, but by the end, her abdomen had shrunken down to not "legible". It wasn't parasites or obstructions that I could see. She just wouldn't eat toward the last few months. At the beginning, even while just a little derp, she would take the food and only eat parts. So it might have had some sort of disorder in the gut to begin with. Watching these 4 amigos go to town, not only on the food, but growth, that first one was ill from the start. But back then I had little to compare it to. But the damn thing loved watching TV. heh heh.
The problem with a lot of veteran hobbyists is the "chase". I see this in the vaping community, where new gear is always "in vogue" even if the older gear works great. Also in the Herp trade. They want the "cool" and if it is common, it is boring and discarded.
For me, I am enamored of Theraphosidae. Heck I even like that stupid H. vonwirthi that I never ever ever see. :-D
But the OBT has striking color, attitude and some of the coolest webbing I've ever seen. What's not to like? :-)

I would use peat or topsoil. You can also add some clay to help it keep it's form.

It's your call. I don't find Poecilotheria to be particularly bad tempered myself, so I don't know how much they will prepare you for a potentially defensive spider. If you get one as a sling and raise it, you'll probably be fine.
Tom Moran my regalis is about 1-2 years old and my metallica 3 months and so far my regalis behaved pretty good
Yeah, I love pokies, and I find that mine are very well behaved. My OBT is also well behaved, though, so you never know what you'll get. I say go for it! :)
I got one as a freebie and I was like oh shit because I was a kinda noob, but it's not too bad if you're careful. Transfers were a pain though lol
