- Guess that food is back!! Today, we will be taste-testing… ROTI! There are so many different kinds of roti and flatbread - Roti Canai, roti telur, roti pisang, capati, thosai, the list goes on and on. Will we be victorious in guessing the different types of roti and flatbread? or will this blindfolded taste-test be too difficult of a challenge to handle? Watch on to see if we get our IC revoked or not. HAHA!

Nandini was right. It's just a language/term used for most of the roti featured. Basically paratha, canai, and malabar is the same technically. Clearly the producers are not an expert in roti while using google for verifications and those malabar and paratha used in the video were frozen supermarket goods right. I'm a little offended you guys mimicking Singaporean as a subject to certify your arguments, but it doesn't get me all tits-up, I'm a Singaporean, a fan of Says, and I'm not pity. 😉

I think it doesn't come from the word Chennai..In Bahasa Melayu, 'canai'= to roll the bread until it is flat and thin, hence it was called Roti Canai

Because of not many people in Singapore speak Malay, they call it Roti Paratha, a more Indian name, Parotta.
and Malaysians who mainly speak Malay, call it by it's Malay name, Roti Canai. Macam tu ek?
its the exact same thing. roti canai originated in india where it was called parotta/paratha. it somehow made its way to malaysia where the recipe was slightly changed and called roti canai. canai refers to either chennai, a city in india or channa/channa dal, which is chickpeas curry. in singapore, its called prata/roti prata which is essentially the same thing
..or from the verb in Malay language _canai_ meaning, to shape (dough).

Nandini is a public figure, she do a good content but the problem is her attire are not suitable for shooting a video that generally view by everyone. Di Muara Bungo Jambi ada martabak india namanya Malabar, makannya pake kari ayam / daging. Ada yang isi kentang, ada yang isi telur. Namun tekstunya lebih ke martabak telur. Walaupun begitu juga ada jual roti canai (pakai gula pasir dibungkus kertas bentuk kerucut). Tapi roti canai malabar sama saja dengan roti canai biasa. Di tempat orang jual martabak mesir juga ada roti canai, rasanya sama persis dan sama2 pakai gula (walaupun lebih enak makan roti canai pakai kuah kari). Gulanya biasa buat bikin teh manis atau kopi saja. Tapi roti kesukaan saya adalah roti pita, apalagi kalau baru masak wah enak banget roti pita

What is the difference of roti canai and roti prata?
They are conceptually the same.
Roti Canai or Roti Cane is Roti (Indian style flatbread) served with a side of Canai. The Roti can be whole-wheat flour dry rotis, or shallow fried with a bit of oil, or shallow fried All Purpose Flour (maida) rotis. They are rolled either plain, or folded over twice, or thinly stretched, gathered into a coil and rolled.
Canai - the side served with the rotis - is modification of the name ‘Chana’ (chickpeas or garbanzo), or more specifically Chana Masala. Nowadays though, the side in Roti Canai could be any veg dish with gravy, including dal.
Roti Prata is specifically the thinly stretched, gathered into a coil and rolled version of Roti, which is called Malabar Parota or Kerala Parota in India. This flaky flatbread can be ordered with any side (chicken, mutton or egg based), but by default it comes with either an onion - tomato - garlic - ginger based red gravy, or sambhar.
