It's 1000 times more......everything.......when I saw and heard them live. I was fortunate enough to have been able to see them in the bars of Seattle before they got huge. You need to hear "Would?" It's my all time favorite of theirs, also, "Love, Hate, Love"
@@holeshotrob Oh wow, that's awesome that you got to see them back then.. 😧 and I already checked out both of those songs and both of them are amazing. 🎵 I think Would is my favorite so far but man, Nutshell was really good too..
I loved being in my early 20's for "Grunge" back in the 90's. It vibed like no other music ever had with me, and in particular, AIC saw me through some dark times. Thanks for your reactions, and I hope you do a lot more more AIC on your channel. May I recommend (from Unplugged) Got Me Wrong, Down in a Hole, Frogs, Sludge Factory, or really anything from that concert. The whole experience was transcendent.
He mentions privacy in this song. Layne was severely affected by his loss of privacy due to his fame. I think he was wearing a black glove. I have heard that the gloves were to hide the marks on his hands from shooting up in certain areas that he needed to hide. Thx!
AIC has given me a lot of joy throughout the years but as I get older I can see and feel, maybe sense more of Layne's pain. Man in the Box usually perks me up. Listen to that if you haven't, Nikki.
One good song of Alice in Chains (POST Layne Staley) is called "your decision". I have heard many people say they do not like AIC without Staley, but that is nonsense. Jerry Cantrell was and is the lyricist. It's the same sound and good lyrics. Just different with no Staley tones. I really like Cantrells solo albums too.
I was born in '81. I think the first music I remember listening to was my oldest sisters type of music in the mid to late 80s like Madonna, Whitney Houston, Journey, Chicago, Toto, etc. Which I liked and still do quite a bit. My mom liked the Chicago and Journey type bands along with Country music. Which I loved also especially 90's Country, which was amazing and the best Country music out there, IMO. Anyway, going through the 90's I started listening to bands like Goo Goo Doll, Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul, Matchbox 20 (possibly my favorite band ever), etc. I remember radio stations playing bands like Slayer, Pantera, Metallica, etc. and I didn't really like that type of music (at the time) and Alice In Chains was hiding in there without my knowledge because their first album was a little harder. Well, I had a friend in high-school who loved Metallica so I heard a bit more from them and started to realize that it wasn't all too "hard" which I still don't like. After I graduated and got a job at an auto dealership the other employees would blast the rock station and I would hear Alice In Chains quite a bit and I took me a while to realize that I liked every single Alice In Chains song they would play on the radio. It was actually only about 4 months ago I started going down the Alice In Chains rabbit whole and checking out all of their songs. I really do like all types of music if it is done well, and the only reason I said up above that Matchbox 20 is "probably" my favorite band ever is because of getting pulled into the Alice In Chains rabbit hole. I don't know what else to say, Alice In Chains just may be the best band to ever come out, they seem to just keep getting better and better every time I listen to them.
This whole show is well worth watching. They hadn't played a show in 2 years before this, due to laynes addiction. I could be wrong but I think this was his last show with them and then he died a few years after. 6'2 and when they found him he only weighed about 90 pounds. He's one of the best vocalists to live in my opinion
Hey nikki love your reactions to grunge! When your face lightens up at the correct times(when the music is telling you too) it warms an old man's heart...lmao! So being the same age and spending my entire young adult life with all these crazy guys I'd love help a bit with perspective. So the grunge movement, era, genre whatever is like metalheads, and surfer punks jumping off the metal bus and tried to land on the hippy bus...a hybrid. And they all supported each other, and we're buddies. The other mixed group was "Madd season" you just might fall off your chair, it's Wayne staley singing!! You'll trip hard, and really enjoy it. Only one album, one tour. Way Cool junior stuff.
@@hah5382 Hippy mixed with metal! That's a really good way to describe it, I never thought about that before. And yeah, I still have to check out Mad Season. I'm curious to see what that sound is like! ☺️
Enough was said. Alot went on to make this performance happened. Layne had his hair cut and died at last minute. It it interfere with the lighting so we had to change had to lighting and add the candles to soften everything. I have a hard time watching this without 😭. On the bass guitar it "friends don't let friends get haircuts" this performance almost didn't happen at the last minute it all fell into place and worked beautifully😢
Sadly, this Alice in Chains 'MTV Unplugged' set was one of the last times Layne Staley (lead vocals) performed live in 1996... Watching him onstage, it was clear that he was high on something that night... 'Nutshell' was recorded in late 1993 for the semi-acoustic EP 'Jar of flies'... which went to #1 on the US charts. 'Nutshell' was never released as a single but it became a powerful song and a fan favorite because it captured singer Layne Staley's mindset perfectly (Layne was allegedly using he+++n while they were recording 'Jar of flies' in the studio)... Alice in Chains were slated to open for Metallica in the Summer of '94 but they canceled because of Layne's unwillingness to tour. The life of an addict like Layne Staley was, sadly, a destructive pattern of use... rehab... recovery... relapse... use... rehab... etc. And after the death of his ex GF Demri Parrott in 1996 from her drug use, Layne apparently lost all hope ... It seemed pointless for him to battle his addictions in the face of loss and grief. When he recorded his last 2 Alice in Chains songs in 1998, Layne was in bad shape and missing teeth... He refused to do any more work w/ Alice In Chains after 2000... In 2001, a friend ran into Layne and he looked terrible and was under the impression that he could sing for a new band. He still was in contact w/ former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr, who was his he+++n buddy in the band... Tragically, Layne Staley was found dead in his Seattle apartment in 2002 from an OD. Mike Starr died in 2011 from a prescription drug OD after years of struggling w/ addictions.

I've heard this song a million times over but when I learned the story of Layne Staley it just invoked a different response in me. It's just such an incredible story.
Yeah it was sad and scary seeing this performance, he had been MIA for alot of shows. And this was a HUGE SURPRISE FOR ME, MTV still played music back then too
My two favorite songs "Nutshell" by AIC and "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd have something strange in common. Both seem to be a third verse. Coincidence? .....yeah probably.
The song "Rooster" is actually excellent unplugged. You should check out Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged video for "Rooster." Also, I don't know if you've heard the song "Epic" by the band Faith No More before but I think you should check out that song/video. It's pretty cool.

RIP Layne, He was a huge inspiration tio me startt singing. Also going through depression and drug abuse, i can relate to dozens of their songs and still battleling those demons and it´s not easy. Down in a hole is of course the the next obvious reaction and Would and Sludge factory. Rooster in my opinion is better in the album not the unplugged version.
Layne was so sick with his addiction when this was recorded. he was so high.....its still sad to watch, even all these years later. it's almost like we were watching him kill himself. such a waste.
Makes me sad hearing the lyrics…..he will never be forgotten!
I always felt like Layne's falsetto is what his crying soul sounds like. 😢
