  • I take a trip back to my childhood as I look at Goodman Games conversion of The Isle Of Dread. This is a great conversion to 5e, and includes the original Expert printings so you can run it with your favorite OSR system!

In my opinion, Goodman Games is making the best RPG material today. I love their stuff! I'm also a big fan of Old School Essentials.

I'm running this for 5e right now. My Isle of Dread started in Mystara, but it's been drifting from plane to plane, so it's picked up visitors from Oerth, Krynn, and the players came from Faerun. So they have the island to explore, but also the central mystery of why it's traveling and how to get it to go back to Faerun.

I love it! Can you describe the party?

@@DMTalesTTRPG They came in on a prison barge, in chains. We have an elf cleric, a dragonborn ranger, a half-orc battlemaster, a half-elf warlock, and a gnome druid. Their prison ship crashed on the coral reef when the island suddenly appeared in Faerun and washed up on the shore of one of the smaller villager islands. Currently making their way to Tanaroa and the Great Wall.

Played this back in the 80's. Still tickles me when I see any image of the "Elemental plane of water" from modern editions and I recognize the outline of the Isle of Dread among the islands. It definitely works with your plane-shifting island idea.

I really would love to take one of my parties through this at some point.

I agree this is a top notch product. Love the inclusion of the interviews and behind the scenes essays of the creation of this classic module. Having both original printings is a nice inclusion (especially since the art changed quite a bit between the two). The 5e conversion is the reason I picked this up. I had this module too back in the day (the BECMI version) and always wanted to run it or play it. I'm currently running a 5e campaign with the Isle being the final destination. The party has been having so much fun sailing the seas, fighting pirates, and exploring old ruins that they haven't reached the Isle yet. So in a way this book inspired a sea campaign I never imagined. Still I'm looking forward to finally using the material in the book (I've grabbed some of the monsters and plunked them down on other islands). Nice job on the review and hope your groups enjoy the isle when they reach it.

I hope they have fun too! I need to pick up the Cook Expert book to get a grasp on hex crawling. It’s a but if a lost art form.

Back in the 80's we never played this module because the general consensus was that everybody had it and had read it, so it's definitely a candidate for doing.

Mystara, the best D&D world I think.

Another thing these Goodman Games editions do is fill in a lot of plot holes, as well as fleshing out undescribed areas, that the original prints had due to space/time limitations.

It looks like they add some value that makes them worth the money.

Very much so. The reprint of the originals, and the interviews are fantastic. And all the releases in the series are like this.

Definitely worth it, IMO. I do wish they didn't reprint BOTH editions of the original module (the blue cover and orange cover) inside, to keep the size and cost down. I got it on Ebay and saved a few bucks, though.

It’s trying to capture a bit of the history as well, which is why. But I do understand. This series is so much fun to own.

It's worse, the Kopru are mind flayer mermaids.
    Good overview!

The Kopru and Mind Flayers would work well together as different forms of the same alien race. Add the crashed spaceship from Barrier Peaks to the plateau on Isle of Dread. The reason for all of the dinosaurs, etc. are they escaped from the ship.

I understand. It’s a bit of a downside. On the other hand, I’ve pulled monsters into my VTT by snapping a photo and copying the text from my iPhone, so it’s not a total bummer.
For maps and portability, though, I get it.
