    What issues do you struggle with as a sensitive Catholic?

    I had knee replacement surgery about 10 years ago, and ever since then I haven't been able to kneel. It really made me self conscious until I realized that I was thinking more about how I appeared to others than about the mass. That shift in thinking made all the difference.

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes! Some people physically can't kneel for a variety of reasons. Sitting when everyone else is kneeling does take a good bit of humility, and often people don't even of that.

      I have really bad knees and a bad lower back. I can kneel for a minute or two but then have to rest on the pew and just kind of lean forward to the back of the pew in front of me. But I can't even genuflect, so I just sort of bow my head before entering the pew. I see lots of people doing this, and I think everyone understands.❤

      I sit with an older woman who has had knee surgery and is having the other knee done tomorrow 4/9. She sits and doesn’t kneel. You are okay. What’s important is that you’re able to make it to Mass. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

    If you want quiet, go to a low TLM. Plus people there do not talk as much before, during, or after masses like they do at local parish churches.

      That is such a lovely option if it is available in your area- a good one to keep in mind. Thanks for the tip!

    This is a GREAT subject and video. I’ve had difficulty with kneeling and blood pressure. I find sitting at the back or very front very helpful. I know a priest who is highly sensitive to incense, he really struggles with it and will ask another priest to do the incensing if he can, then he will cough and choke his way through Mass. Thanks Kate and Jennifer.

      God bless him! It must be really difficult for these priests who have trouble with incense- and we rarely even stop to think about their plight. Thank you for mentioning this :)

    Some great ones here. My autistic 14yo daughter needs to sit through Mass, and both my daughter and son will sketch and draw throughout Mass because both of them find they can focus better when they keep their hands busy. With my son, who has ADHD, we have discovered going on Saturday evening has been best for him, and it also allows him to serve on the altar!

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      God bless him for being an altar server! That is not an easy job- knowing everyone is watching you. Yes, sitting is definitely a huge help for some Catholics during mass. It's also very interesting about the drawing; keeping the hands busy really is something that helps a lot of people focus their minds. Thanks for sharing!

    I find wearing suitable clothing for the season helps some churches can be very cold in winter and wooden pews cold to sit on if you are sensitive xx

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes! That is a great point. It's hard to be attentive at mass if you are freezing cold or too hot. Here we have that issue more in the summer... the church's A/C is literally arctic. In July we see parishioners stopping outside the church to put on coats before going in; some bring blankets into the sanctuary. That just seems so wrong, lol. Forgetting my church coat in the summer makes for a very cold, penitential mass.

    Hello wonderful ladies! I love you channel and feel so blessed to watch your videos!
    My family and I worry about large crowds, too. There is actually a parish near us that has a 6 pm Sunday Mass which fulfills our Holy Obligation and is less busy at the same time.
    God bless you and thank you for all you do! So blessed by your channel 🙏💕🌷

    Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips. We can also ask Holy Spirit to help us focus. I have to remember to die to myself to do God's will.
    I just flew back from a gospel wkshop in another village & got to see my daughter. The wx was sunny & beautiful. We saw quite a bit of hookers along the river as we were flying back. Many people here go ice fishing using fish hooks tied to a string then to a trimmed foot long tree branch; we call it hooking instead of ice fishing, or the Yup'ik word is manaq.
    I so appreciate you being here for us !

      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We're so glad you had a better trip this time, Lena :) It's always fascinating to hear about life in your village. How long will you still have ice?

    • @LenaSheppard
      @LenaSheppard 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@catholicmomanddaughter Thank you. The ice on the Yukon River usually goes out in the middle to the later middle part of May. We've had quite a bit of snow this winter so it should be an exciting river breakup with high, swift water. Today it's cold w/ a cold north wind. One of the beliefs is that the wx doesn't start warming up until after the Russian orthodox Easter. That's not until May!

    THANK YOU for this video 📹 💜 PRAISE JESUS when the Church is full & it's beneficial to have a game plan for yourself. Yes, I do sit up front to keep myself focused, too. Today, I worked thru super anxiety when the other gift bearer didn't show up. The Lord was gracious & someone was able to join me when I asked her. I'm getting better at not being so nervous, but like all of us, Jesus is still workin' in me. I'm wiped out but headed to Adoration soon. St Thomas, pray for us. Happy Divine Mercy Sunday ✡️✝️🕊📿❤️‍🔥

    Some low-key volunteer opportunities in my Church are altar linen care (volunteers simply pick up and drop off altar linens that they take home to wash) and dropping off food/grocery items for donations to communities in need in the church vestibule area.
    I recently bought a Scapular medal where the front is Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and the back is the Sacred Heart of Jesus since I have very sensitive skin especially on my back and can’t use the metal scapulars.

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those are great suggestions! There are probably many more low key opportunities at most parishes... we are thinking of all the unsung volunteers who go quietly about their work at church to help keep everything running smoothly. God bless them!

    Thank you for this perspective! It never occurred to me that there are so many people with many different types of sensitivities.
    I also appreciate the advice for folks on how to take care of themselves rather than insisting the entire congregation change to meet their particular sensitivity.

    A brown scapular (Rosary Scapular) is what I wear for this very reason. It doesn’t cause my eczema to flare.
    I have COPD and am very allergic to fragrances(perfumes, hygiene products, laundry detergents, and flowers, I have permission from my priests to sit in the Adoration Chapel for Masses, using a hearing device so that I can hear the Mass and feel a part of it. At first I found it difficult to, but I now look at it as -how blessed am I to be so close to Jesus during the sacrifice of the Mass.

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fragrances can be a real problem; strong scents can also trigger migraines for many people. What a blessing that your priests are so understanding and willing to work with you. How wonderful to be so close to Jesus all through the mass!

    I hear you on the commitment to things which tend to be on the hectic side-it’s a fine line for me, as I want to get out of my comfort zone (some of my best experiences were chaperoning youth mission trips), yet also respecting the fact that my battery depletes more quickly than some. That is a bummer about the incense, Jennifer.😕
    We have it at every Sunday Mass and many daily masses. I’m always saying I would love a candle for my home that smells like it. Luckily our priests choose really lovely incense; not all is as good. And I get the crowds thing, too. Fortunately my husband plays organ, so I have my own little perch up in the choir loft with him.😅

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Annie- total bummer about the incense. But it's interesting that you mention that there are different grades of incense. I have noticed that sometimes the incense just makes my eyes water, itch, etc, but then sometimes it makes my throat feel like it's closing up! You are so lucky to have your choir perch :)

  • @MomHarper927

    To avoid big crowds, I go to mass on Saturday evenings (the mass is held with Sunday's liturgy). This fills the Sunday mass obligation.
    The Sunday morning mass is so crowded, and there's not enough seats for everyone, and I feel so uncomfortable to be squeezed in the pew so tightly (I quess me being a typical Finn that appreciates personal space).
    I'm a newcomer from Lutheran church and the Catholic church is quite small here, a majority Lutheran North European country (Finland to be specific).

    • @catholicmomanddaughter
      @catholicmomanddaughter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What a blessing to have you come home to the Catholic Church- congratulations! Yes- in some areas of northern Europe it can be a challenge to even find a Catholic church. Your solution sounds perfect. We also have family members who find crowded masses to be quite difficult for them. Having the option of going to a less crowded mass has been a blessing for them

    For those who struggle to pay attention during Mass, I also recommend praying the rosary or bringing a good Catholic book to read. This is relatively common at the traditional Latin Mass. Sometimes during the sermon, I also pray the St. Therese and St. Philomena chaplets as a way to help me mediate on the priest's words.

    I have to tell you that I really enjoyed this video. It got me thinking about other ways that Catholics can be sensitive in addition to allergies, incense, etc. Personally, I like to pray silently at Mass and I like to keep my eyes closed a lot. One of the reasons, not the only reason, is that I am sensitive to my brothers and sisters who, at Mass, raise their hands when praying the Our Father and/or hold hands during the Our Father, move their hands outward when responding, "And with your spirit," and who are turning around and waving to everybody in the whole church during the sign of peace. You're video helped me to recognize my sensitivity to that. I'm sharing with you a little video from Ask The Archbishop. He's in Canada:
