    So grateful for this commentary man. So much of the STG community are just initials on a scoreboard, names on a replay here or there with no search results, etc. so having an actual person talk through their experience is extremely refreshing.

    You mentioned the shield that the TLB gets when you bomb or break, but it's not just blocking your shots. Every time you let your lock-on shots hit the shield you get a significant boost to your meter. So if you come back to CC at some point, spamming lock shots into the shield can actually make some of the harder patterns easier as you can bomb stall through them by spamming lock shots to build up meter to bomb again.

    That was an awesome run. I've been playing shmups for a while but always ended up continue spamming my way through them. I just love the genre. Pretty much was at a point of giving up, especially on Touhou. Just couldn't hang. But I started watching your leveling up vids and taking your advice on trying to control the screen and manipulate bullets with micro moves. It's really made a difference. Crimson Clover is the first game I'm really taking my time with trying to dissect. It's really enjoyable. Not panic dodging as much and holding out to see a path thru the rain hoping for a clear.
    Quick funny story, though. I was taking a break last nite. Short walk with some headphones playing shmup tracks. A green laser came out of nowhere towards my head. I micro stepped back and tilted my head slightly left to dodge it. Haha. It was some dude on his balcony playing with a laser pointer.
    Anyway. Just wanted to drop a line. Road to 1cc...

    Oh wow... so apparently he combined the mechanic of hyper with bombs in that they share the same resource? Welp... there goes my totally unique idea I was planning for my game. XD
    Also, is it the hyper meter in this game that adds a multiplier? Because my plan was to limit multipliers to the hyper mode only (to avoid things like the bee pickups in DoJ and in general overly punishing situations).
    So far you are the only person I've found who really goes into any depth, and basically I need a crash course in all of the big titles to see what exists (mechanics/scoring) to see what worked, what did not, and any problems or pitfalls left that these systems could solve. As fun as it is to play these games I'm limited by my budget (you can't have a game dev stealing other people's games), and it isn't the best for analyzing it since the amount of time I would have to put in to learn the ins and outs of the scoring system through playing just isn't viable. Any resources you have please let me know. There are things like the "bullet hell 101" guide that is a godsend, but it doesn't get into the nitty gritty of each scoring system.
    You bring up an issue with the shared resource system, and that using bombs often won't give you enough time to build back up for the hyper. My thoughts in combining them were this: bombs are typically panic buttons for players to clear bullets; newer players need them more than someone playing for score. I've seen situations where you DON'T want to use your bombs because of how it effects your score, which helps in adding challenge, but I never like it when a game gives you a resource that you DON'T want to use, or players tend to hold onto for a moment that never comes.
    The TYPE of solution I want is where bombs have a secondary usage so the challenge becomes getting the most out of a limited resource. I thought making it use a chunk of the hyper meter would work since you would naturally want to use the hyper (as its primary function is not just for extra damage but as a score multiplier for the damage you do during). Apparently that doesn't work?
    Worth noting is I planned on a system where your ship dies on the 3rd hit (no need for health bars or anything like that). The less number of hits you take adds a HUGE bonus to your score; this means a few things. First, if you are going for score it doesn't change how you play, because if you want to compete with others at the top level it is a requirement. However, if you're not at the top of the top and trying to play for score, a single hit isn't an effective game over; look at how often speed runners will make a small mistake in the first half of a run but end up with a world record run. I want the feeling that you can still clutch it out.
    I think the largest benefit is effectively creating different challenges WITHIN a difficulty. If you can take two hits on each level, now that 1CC clear becomes easier, while all of the usual additional challenges remain (not losing a life, not getting hit, etc. which can all be reflected in score). The reason all of this is relevant is the chance of an item like a bomb to drop would change depending on some variables... kind of like how items work in Mario Kart. So if you are low on bombs, or you've taken a hit (or two), or you are losing lives, have to continue, etc. you will be more likely to see a bomb pickup drop. This means the better you play, the less bombs you get... the worse you play the more you will see them. Kind of a cheap way to implement dynamic difficulty that I otherwise could not deliver on at the moment.
    Now, since the only EXPONENTIAL modifier to score was intended to be the hyper meter, your best option for score is to use the resource on a hyper instead of bombs. So for the million dollar question: Do you think this alone is enough to address the issues you had with a shared resource system?

    Just got a 1cc on arcade original I prefer the gold ship I managed to no miss all the way until the last stage on the saw blade ships if you go to the bottom of the screen exactly in the middle and wiggle your ship left and right really quick i almost never die on them. I also double break on the tank refight and most mid bosses then grab the energy refill. On the crazy purple shot on tlb if you do a upside down u shaped dodge going from right to left it helps. Also playing on a qanba obsidian with a Korean lever was worth the money.

    Getting into Arcade Original now, all those tips are gonna be super helpful! The furthest I got previously on one credit was stage 3 boss, and that is by miraculously surviving the end of stage 3. Brutal stage. Did a credit feeding run yesterday to get a feel of the whole game, and stage 5 is really hectic, reminds me a lot of DOJ stage 5. Stage 4 also gets kinda nuts starting from the midboss, and I also can't figure out what those sea urchin enemies do either.
    Stage 4 is definitely the Garegga stage. The cat's eye and midboss section has you flying between thunderclouds like Garegga stage 5, and the midboss looks like a giant version of one of those carriers in Garegga stage 5. And as you said, the boss's second last phase just screams Glow Squid phase 2. Also love watching when score players just milk that boss phase like crazy! Juicy cancel after juicy cancel!

    @windup13ird60 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As always, thank you. For your commitment to shmups, their fans, and to the quality of your content. What I'm about to ask may sound negative out of context, but it comes from being pretty new to shmups and how one learns to do big runs like that, so it's asked purely out of wanting more knowledge:
    How is it that you are not fully familiar with what triggers rank in CC, ie the combination of stars, bomb use, score, etc, and are sort of educated guessing or using ideas from other games when describing it? I would figure, without having looked it up myself yet, that a game as old and appreciated as Crimzon Clover would have all of its DNA completely mined, obsessed over, and posted out by its community. Is this not the case? Did you not really need to find out the exact science because you can clear with your theory of how to get low rank?
    I figured that beloved games like these are "solved" as to how their mechanics work. Is there still work being done to understand the particulars? If so that's insane, in a good way.

    Nice! Makes me want to get back on the grind for this one. I really ought to just play more practice and play the individual stages like I did the Time Attack (which is stellar, gotta get that Master++ rank!). Also, there is a way to speedkill the midboss at 17:07 if you get really aggressive with pointblanking, though I can't really remember how much more dangerous it is in Arcade mode. A full survival run is almost certainly the way to go, I always impulsively play stage 1 and 2 for score pretty hard (because they're relatively easy, right?) and then get game over in stage 3 because I jacked rank way up :P

  • @100hundert

    Man, I've been playing shmups on and off for around ten years now and never really had a specific goal or achievement to speak of. I always tend to lose interest in most titles. I'm actually not even a very achievement - driven player, and I kinda have a short attention span with games.
    But CC might just be the one game that I can see myself actually wanting to try for a 1cc. The game is so filled with variety that grinding the training mode and doing full runs rarely gets old. Every stage feels so different from the one before it, and all the bosses are so memorable, which really helps the longevity of this game.
    There is just something about Crimzon Clover that really draws me in, you can just feel Clover TACs love for shmups ooze out of every single detail.
    How much did you practice single stages vs doing full runs? Stage 5 is so long and full of midbosses that I assume a ton of time went into this stage plus praciting the two final bosses.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also started to dive into the scoring system, but noticed how often I died stupid deaths while trying to pay attention to my locks or double breaking. I realized it doesn't really make that much sense to try chase scores when I can barely get through stage 3 in Original. So maybe using a 1cc survival focus as a milestone makes more sense, with going for scores after that.
      Though it's a bit hilarious how low scores are in this game if you don't double break 😂

  • @cruelcumber5317

    I've been getting into this game recently and am fairly new to the genre, so when you mentioned difficulty rank based on star count I wanted to see if I could find anything on it and I couldn't (though to be fair this was just through googling a few variations on "crimzon clover rank" because I don't know the best specific places to look, and coming from niche RPGs I know that google often won't conveniently give you the best sites for these kinds of things). I also did a small bit of testing in training mode in stage 5 and I didn't notice a change in enemy aggressiveness or bullet speed going from starting with 0 stars to starting with 700000 stars. If you have any source or evidence of this ranking system I would really appreciate it, otherwise I'm going to assume you got something mixed up somewhere (which in the context of your clear isn't the worst thing to get wrong because it basically means you beat the same game as people trying to get all the extends while "skipping" 2 of them making it that much more impressive). I just want the best leg up I can get as I get started on my own attempts at arcade original 1CC so I need to see clear evidence before deciding to skip extends and limiting my break usage.
    That all being said, loved the run and commentary, not just a bunch of helpful information and gameplay, but also really entertaining. Really, I've been loving you content overall, if I come off as harsh in the above bit it's just because I'm not always the best at phrasing things to convey the exact tone I want to get across.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I can absolutely verify that stars increase rank, it s just you need A Lot of stars ha. Go to training mode and max out the star count, that will make their effect clear :-)

    • @cruelcumber5317
      @cruelcumber5317 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheElectricUnderground Checked it with stars maxed out, and I did notice a significant difference, it was just more subtle and gradual than I was expecting. Based on messing around with the numbers a bit more, I feel that getting all the extends seems worth it with the star count making it a little faster but it still seems hard to notice without a side by side or immediate direct comparison, which would only further be compounded by how I'm going to get stars no matter what, but I definitely don't want to go full score play while getting the first 1CC, even more so than normal. Thank you for the help especially since I hadn't heard about it anywhere else. Even if in practice I'm not going to change my star goals, it's still really good to know this information so I'm making an informed decision.

    Just started following your channel, and I’m now playung this game. What’s a ‘cancel’? Do you explain it in one of your videos?
    Thanks

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh sure no prob! So a cancel is that there are certain enemy types (usually bigger ones) that clear the screen of bullets when they die. So a strategy for scoring and survival is to delay killing these enemies until there are a bunch of bullets on screen, then you get the cancel just in time :-)

    How do you get the type Z?

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to play the game for a while and it will unlock, so just do some arcade mode runs until it appears

      @@TheElectricUnderground "some" arcade runs... I think you need to collect 3,000.000 stars in total. It takes quite some time to get Z.

    Is incredible how much i don' t like this game , as a lover of 80's and 90's shmups ( classics ones like r-type and first era of manic shooters like batsugun, shienryu , battle garegga and cyvern for example) i like clean graphics where everything is not confused and where you can see the backgrounds , enemies and the beautiful pixelart created by the team , for me play these games is not only about dodging and scoring but also get intrigued about the story and the lore behind them , here unfortunately all i can see are only huge numbers , tons of stars and gigantic writings everywhere , if the score was just calculated without all these stupid (in my opinion) things , the game would have been 1 milion times better

      @@bitteralmonds666 cool games and yes very cool and clean gameplay , im personally waiting for the re-edition of the toaplan classics by M2 , mighty goose and rangok skyes that is a omage to the toaplan era like batsugun , is very coloured but not chaotic and is made by one guy so i MUST support it , as an italian i also still wait xydonia release for ps4 , if it ever happen , the team behind it is italian ando makes me really proud😁
